Gooch, by his superlative standards was not at his best, but a poor Gooch is better than anything else out there. He was the LEADING scorer, and destroyed Dublin. In the final he terrorised Cork in the first half without toiuching the ball. In the last 15 minutes, after Cork came back to a point, Gooch set up TWO of the final three scores. Genius. However McCarthy is possibly player of the year. As Jack O'Connor said, it was his return that made it all possible. So Dell, I am on to you. A bit like saying Shefflin and Walsh are useless at hurling.

Since about 1980 the all stars have been based on Two games a year, the all Ireland semi and the final. The losers in the semi don't count either, for the selectors.

As I keep saying, Whelehan WON one for THIRTY FIVE minutes.

mccarthy was the main reason kerry won the AI this year he's a certainty for an All star. drove kerry forward against Antrim/Dublin. then held Joe Sheridan and P O Neill in the final.
have to say harrington was the one meath player who stood out for me this year but wouldnt pick out crawford etc as all star nominees.

the all stars is now officially a joke, no sour grapes here cos the players wont actually get an all star but how can limerick and wicklow get more nominations then meath who reached the all ireland semi final, its nice to see joe get one after the start to the year he had, but how nigel crawford and eoin harrington didnt get one defies believe, it just shows what has been the case for the last few years that nominations are not based on players performances anymore, its give the most to the finalists and draw names out of a hat for the rest.

I can't believe Crawford didn't get a nomination and harrington has been very impressive.
Anyone know who picks the nominations? Do they only watch the final!?

1 nomination is one too many IMO.

This mid-table division 2 team might have looked good in the Summer against Waterford, WEstmeath
and every other brutally useless county but when things came down to man stuff they werent at the races.

Harrington was superb all year but didn't do anything flashy and if you don't do anything flashy as a back you ain't going to get noticed. As Metallica sang "Sad but True". Cooper had one good game in the entire Championship. He ended up as top scorer because he can kick frees over from 20 yards or in other words do what a decent 14 year old can do. I think he's a great player who wasn't in the top 6 forwards this year and therefore doesn't deserve one. The All Star's are picked by journalists who have checks and balances and who didn't one last year to factor in and frankly the GPA nominations have more credibility.

By being the best Centre Back in the country along with Canty. Maybe that's good enough? No?

I'm not sure about Cian Ward getting nominated, he was probably our weakest forward this year certainly from open play. I'd acknowledge the penalty against Mayo, the sidelines against Kerry and his position in the scoring charts but just don't think he was AllStar material in 2009.

Eoin Harrington, Cormac McGuinness and Nigel Crawford were, however! I had actually hoped that McGuinness would be one of the favourites for the centre half-back position (given that this is the only position we've never won an AllStar) but alas, it wasn't to be.

A bit like saying Shefflin and Walsh are useless at hurling. Please READ what Dell said in his post. He never said Cooper was useless at football so how is it "A bit like saying Shefflin and Walsh are useless at hurling." Why are you having this straw man argument with yourself? Step into the real world with the rest of us. Its great craic!

This Meath panel will be more concerned with winning a Leinster next year and getting back to Croke Park for the third Sunday in September than they will be with All Stars.
