Junior A hurling championship

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Sundays final was a very, very good hurling match. Despute a heavy pitch following a week of rain, the two teams served up a very skilful encounter. The big players from Blackrock all delivered performances on the day, with Richie Murphy taking the man of the match award. His goal from a penalty in the 1st half and scores from 65's early in the 2nd half put his team in a lead that eventually was too much for Effin to claw back. Nineteen year old half forward Ruari Shaughnessy from Blackrock scored 4 points from play and all were classy scores, the young lad has a bright future ahead. Effin once again tried Nicky Quaid at centre forward but he was well shackled by Brian Moloney, who has put in some tremendous performances at centre back over the last 6-8 weeks. County panelists Richie McCarthy and Dave Moloney both played very well, with McCarthy getting a monster of a score from well inside his own half. Nicky Quaid was moved to centre back and Damien Moloney centre forward 10 mins into the 2nd half when they were 6 points behind and this gave Effin new impetus, they got the lead back to 2 points and had a great chance to bring it to 1 but Blackrock got a grip again at half forward and got a couple of quick scores. They lead by 8 points with 10 mins to go, and although Effin got a goal and Damien Moloney went on a great run and nearly sneaked another, Blackrock held on well in the end.

Effin are definitely good enough to challenge again next year, certainly these two teams were the best in the county by a long way this year. Blackrock will be looking forward to next season and having a craic at intermediate level. Eight of the starting 15 from Sunday were 22 years old or younger so they are a team for the future.

Can anyone list the 2 teams please? I'm out of the country and can read a proper match report anywhere. It seems like it certainly wasn't a 0-14 to 0-3 lame-duck affair, with from what I'm reading between the lines, some great scores and a great atmosphere. Tell me, was Heffo the keeper for Blackrock?

Pat Heffo was the keeper for Blackrock. What a game and what a night on sunday night in kilfinnane and ardpatrick, Back to the good time for this club after a lot of negatives over the last few years. Effin were good sporting losers and no doubt will do well at this grade again next year, but blackrock deserved this and some of the scores in the second half were outstanding givin the conditions. I travelled from westmeath on sunday to see this and am thrilled that i made it. it was a great day to be from kilfinnane.

Smashin game on Sunday, fair play to both teams for a great hours entertainment. Blackrock deserving winners as they pretty much dominated the game throughout bar a stage midway through the 2nd half and also the last 5 mins when Effin were piling on the pressure. Some really terrific scores by both sets of forwards, the stand-out by a long way being Richie McCarthy's effort from his own 65 midway through the 2nd half. My pre-match post suggested 4-5 match-winners on both sides, Blackrock certainly came out on top in these key exchanges. Brian Moloney didn't give Nicky Quaid a puck the whole 1st half, Ruairi Shaughnessy gave Mikey O'Donnell a tough day of it, Damien Moloney was not his usual dominating presence (until he was put up in the forward line when he seemed to cause chaos for a while), john Dillon and David Moloney has a tough old battle in midfield though Moloney really stormed into it in the last quarter when Blackrock were under serious pressure. Richie McCarthy was reasonably quiet when in full forward but had a smahin game when he came out to the half forward line. Bearing in mind both teams are full of very talented youngsters (think there's only 2 or 3 from the 30 who started who've celebrated their 30th!!!), it'll be interesting to see how they fare in the next year or two. Can't imagine Effin will be junior for much longer and Blackrock could surprise a few people in intermediate.

Why did ye agree to play in Kilmallock? Ye were entitled to home advantage for this game..............it would have been a good boost for ye.

Best of Luck to the Rockies today, can't make it over to Lattin so will have fingers crossed. As for playing the match in Kilmallock there was a great atmosphere there for the County Final so it's a real pity it couldn't go ahead there. No fault but on the best day of the year there's a wind howling across the field in Kilfinane so can't imagine what it's like these days. Here's hoping they have a good day out.
