Junior A hurling championship

Blackrock were impressive in their win over Doon. Never had to get out of 2nd gear & could have had a few goals but for a fine performance by the Doon Goalie.

The 'well were simply more clinical than Kilteely in a good open game of hurling (certainly the more entertaining of the 2 games in the gaelic grounds last sunday). Kilteely missed a lot of goal chances & had over 10 wides where as the 'well had very few wides. The 'well got a late goal which put a gloss on the scoreline. They showed a lot of experience to close out the game by crowding the defence late on. Paudie Ahern of Kilteely was the stand out player on the field.

Effin have played some tough games this year - 4 times v black rock (3 draws & 1 defeat) which shuld stand to them. They also beat feenagh kilmeedy who are always strong...would expect an Effin V Blackrock Co. Final

The 'well will put it up to Effin though lads. They have a few very experienced players. Experience was all that beat this young and very promising Kilteely Dromkeen team. They just need to win a few more east titles and get more big games under their belts. They will be serious contenders in 2-3 years. No stoppin Blackrock now though after what they did to Doon.

I wouldn't be reading too much into the Blackrock victory over Doon. I thought Doon were a shambles. If not for the goal man it would have been alot worse for Doon. Fair play to Blackrock as you can only beat what is put in front of you and they did that with a bit of style with some great scores taken from well out the field. An example of this would have been Brendan Hennessy who scored two cracking pts from 70 yards out. It must have been a tough day for TG Ryan who just transferred from Doon to Blackrock this year. I hear he is fast becoming a hero on the streets of Kilfinane and Ardpatrick. I'm really looking forward to the Effin Patrickswell game. I hear the well are after pullin in a few players. I'd still fancy Effin to progress after a titanic struggle though. This well set up another do or die match the Blackrock boys and i for would would not like to be calling the result of this one. Anyone care to recall the events of 1982.

Luimneach Abu.

with regard to the post by longd, I would disagree with the contention that Paudi Ahern was the stand out player in the quarter final between the Well and Kilteely. Without meaning to single him out, he made a number of high profile bursts through the middle of the field and may have been involved in a few of the Kilteely scores, but after the lung bursting run, he would take a couple of mins to get back into position. Towards the end, the Well realised that the way to stop him was foul him as soon as he got the sliothar and that cut off a main supply line for their forwards. He does seem a fine young hurler and took a few heavy tackles in the game but may need to mix his game up, he was far too predictable on the day. The No. 9 for the Well had a far steadier game and was involved in the game throughout, which I think is what you need from a midfield player. I thought he deserved man of the match, or either of their corner forwards who caused problems all day for Kilteely. Effin have a great axis at 3,6,8,9,11,14 which could be too strong for the Well though.

oldfullforward, it is fair to say nr 9 for the well had a good game, however in terms of looking at a player who can play at a higher lever (i.e. county), paudie ahern was the stand out player in terms of natural ability. i agree he has a lot to learn but the potential is there. with regards to being predictible, he still drew frees from the well & whether the scores come from play or frees, they all count. I thought the protection from the referee was poor when you consider the wing back for the well got no yellow card having fouled him on numerous occasions...

Wow! Decie a game on the 24th of Sept...whatever the pitch or whatever the time, should be damn fascinating this time of the year! Lol!

kilteely-dromkeen had a decent run this year, but they lost to the losers of the city championship. The winneres of the city, old christians, were beaten by the east losers doon.Doon then got a bad beating in the semi v blackrock. A lot of work to be done yet.If kilteely are serious about improving they should at least enter the east intermediate championship next year.Playing better teams will only help improve the team/players.

longd, I agree with you that Paudi Aherne looked the most natural hurler on the field and I hope he does progress to higher levels. The point I made was about his overall effectiveness, I'd like to see him do less of the extravagant lung bursting runs through the middle and instead be involved constantly in the game. A few youn lads at Junior A level made the Limerick senior panel this year so it will be interesting to see if he gets an opportunity next year. Has he always played midfield? Nicky Quaid from Effin has stood out in a few games this year and has the skill and physical size to compete at higher levels, I wonder will he progress to the senior squad next year?

Paudi is still very young- minor again next year, so still needs a bit of experience. He's used of walking through players at under age level so just needs to realise that its tougher to get away with that from Junior up

Assuming the well lined out as per programme last Sunday, the No. 9 for the well was David McMahon. Don't know what age he is but wondering has he the potential to make it with lmk (minor/21's/intermediate/senior) or was his performance last sunday just a once-off?

Will be good test for him against nicky quaid on saturday or is quaid likely to stay centre forward as he was in quarter final

Ya paudie normally plays midfield with Kilteely Juniors but played at half forward last week v the well as kilteely had some injuries in the forwards, plays centre back for kilteely minors & played half back with the limerick minors this year. Nicky Quaid is quality hurler & one who will probably be in and around the senior set up next year. Saw blackrock & doon game the weekend and centre forward brendan hennessy was impressive (scored 5pts from play), they have 3 who were with the limerick seniors last year; 2 maloneys & richie mccarthy. I would have to agree with Caherline 09 comments about kilteely entering the east intermediate c'ship as it would be good for their development as a team.

Are effin & the 'well playing this weekend or has a fixture been confirmed?

Paudie is a natural mid fielder, didnt get to express himself at all at wing forward. Kilteely had to make a lot of changes to the team for sunday and never really seemed to get comfortable and play hurling, they seemed a bit twitchy and hit a lot of wides. The well were by far the better team on the day, outsmarted and then out hurled Kilteely. At least they both gave a better contest than the seniors
