Seen as the 2001 final is pretty much regarded as 'The Joyce Final' (11 points, more than the entire opposition), I think he has a fair shout.

Glenn Ryan against Laois in 1997, we were down to 13 men after Johnny McDonald and Martin Lynch got sent off, playing against a strong Laois team and the odds were stacked against us, Glenn was outstanding that day, put his body on the line time after time, scored 1-02, and led his team from centre back, that game was the turning point for Kildare GAA in my opinion, we lost this thing about "having no bottle" and we went on to lose to Meath after 3 pulsating games and the following year went to the AI final but I will never forget Glenns performance against Laois in 1997.

Maurice Fitzgerald aginst Mayo in 1997 All Ireland Final. Also Steve McDonnell against Wexford in the 2005 League Final in Croker. While the stage was lesser than an All Ireland, it was one of the best performances Ive ever seen by a player.

For Kildare, Glen Ryan's performance in the Second half against Offaly in a qualifier in 2004 or 2005 in Newbridge. We were 14 points down or something and Glen Ryan sole handedly pulled us back into the game. We still lost by 3 though!!!

maurice fitz doing a one man show against mayo in 1997. being a mayo fan it was heartbreaking to watch, but knowing that one of the games greatest and most sporting players was earning a well deserved all ireland made it a lot easier stomach.

Yes Rory Gallagher did score 3-09. As I recall one of those goals was a penalty but to this day it is the highest individual total ever in the championship correct me if I am wrong. Others are of course Frank McGuigan and Padraig Joyce and Mattie Forde but does anybody recall Frankie Dolan the enigma of Roscommon footall? Scored 13 points against Kildare in what was my view the performance of the 2003 season. Also he scored 12 against Offaly in the game previously so it wasn't a fluke. I know the games went to extra time but he did not even get an all-star. One of the greatest injustices in All-star history IMO.

Frank McGuigan's performance in the '84 Ulster final certainly stands out. In hurling, I thought Brian Whelehan's performance in the '98 hurling final was incredible. He was sick in bed until a few hours before the game and he looked like death warmed up when he took the field. Offaly didn't want to risk him at wing-back in that condition so they stuck him in at full-forward. He destroyed Kilkenny, ending up as the game's top scorer and winning the man-of-the-match award - what a player!
