Does the GAA care about those living abroad?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I am writing to ask Hogan stand members to voice their support for those of us who live abroad.
Thanks to the Setanta collapse we cannot access tv pictures of this year's Championship IN football and hurling. I have contacted RTE who say this is a matter for the GAA. They have failed to respond. Surely this reflects again the narrow minded view of the organisation who have now taken legal action against those who were trying to get round the situation.
Please register you support on this forum as it may help get the GAA to see sense.
Thank you

I feel you can also count those of us living in Northern Ireland being in the same boat. In the Irish News last week RTE stated that those of us in the North could get the Antrim match via our computer. If we encountered a problem it was only a matter of contacting our ISP provider and getting them to provide RTE with a number that would clarify that we in the North were in fact on the island of Ireland.

In order to be prepared I contacted my provider and requested access to the RTE 'streaming' . I got a response that was very different from what I had been led to expect. My provider BT informed me that their server was based in Edinburgh and RTE would not recognise it as anything other as being overseas. They have had discussions with RTE and to date they can get no satisfactory response. I was somewhat annoyed and it ended with an acceptance that the problem lies with RTE. I feel they speak with 'forked tongue'.

If they are not showing the same match live they will not allow BBC to show it independently. We all lose.

I agree entirely and sparrowhawk I too have the same problem as yourself I found coverage of GAA almost easier to access in Australia than I do here

They don't even care about those living North of the border never mond those abroad.

Take the Kerry Dublin game on the bank holiday monday. Its not a bank holiday up north and those living away from home will find it very difficult also to watch this game. And why? Because of money and nothing else. Its is shocking that the GAA left concerts go ahead and put its core repsonibilities of playing GAA in Croke Park in jeprody all to get a few more pennys in the already full coffers.

Those living in uk should encourage their landlord to take out a sky box subscriotion in Ireland and bring the box back. I know a few folk who do this. Setanta were hounding the pubs who done it in the past but don't see a problem now.

Totally agree. I live in London. The Antrim v Kerry game coverage on the internet was pathetic. Had to resort to listening to the match on Kerry Radio, which to be fair was pretty good.
However the Dublin v Kerry game on Monday means I and I'm sure thousands of other people here in UK (and other parts of the world) will be at work and therefore have little chance of watching the match.
The GAA should remember, bearing in mind the number of Irish that don't live in the island of Ireland (and I bet the ratio between those not living in Ireland is far greater than those that do) they need to make the games accessible to ALL.
This particular match is undoubtedly the glamour tie of the round and it's now unaccessible to millions of fans.
So I agree, it looks like the GAA authorities do not care or consider GAA fans abroad.

I think you do need a 26 county address and also take out a subscription as rte is not included free on sky.

the gaa dont care about locals living on clonliffe rd not to mind fan in NI or abroad. its all about money and grabbing as much as they can!! how can you justify laying a pitch on a thurs/friday and playing 4-5 games on it on a sunday/monday - crazy. heavy rain at the weekend could see the pitch in serious trouble as it will not have had any time to set-actually almost hope that happens and they get caught out. thought Mckenna showed no tact also in commenting on the local residents protests -'its only going to make things louder for longer'

calrygael - I know exactly what you mean. It is frustrating to try to watch the matches here in the US; more so with Setanta's problems. Even when Setanta was in better shape they showed massive amounts of rugby and soccer. They showed very little GAA matches. They will show division 4 English soccer matches before they show football or hurling SFC. I can understand some Americans want to see EPL, but there are many many more Galway, Kerry and Mayo supporters abroad than there are Coventry City or Northampton fans!

How come coverage of the matches on the internet is only available in Ireland?? Am heading away shortly it would make the move a good bit easier if I could still keep an eye on the matches.
