Can we not agree that Michael Hogan was a young Nationalist from Tipperary and an inter county GAA player. He was involved in the struggle for Independence what part he played in hostilities we do not know. He was involved in a fight with British soldiers on the eve of the game, went ahead with his fellow GAA members from both Dublin and Tipperary and played a football match on that fateful Sunday. When the Brits attacked at Croke Park the reverbrations went around the world. Michael Hogan was shot dead on the pitch. The famous Stand and this forum is a testament to his memory which will never be forgotten. Whether one chooses to regard him as a hero or a legend or both is up to the individual. I pass through Grangemockler maybe on average once a month the Church and graveyard are on the side of main road, always think of him and his colleagues when I pass that Church. A hero and a legend in my eyes, may heaven be his bed. corkcelt (Cork) - Posts: 4388 - 03/07/2009 16:24:46 331300 Link 0 |

I have no doubt that MichaelHogan along with a great many young men of his time were heroes and maryters for Ireland. However may I pose this question ? Had the war of independence not been sucessful in gaining freedom for 26 of the 32 counties would these great young men and women now be heroes or terrorists. derryman (Derry) - Posts: 3246 - 03/07/2009 18:05:04 331378 Link 0 |

I know what you are saying derryman, history is written by the victors. There is no doubt that if the Germans had won World War 11 we would all have a very different outlook on the history of the 20th century.. However I don't think it would have made any difference in relation to the men who fought in our war of independence. Amongst Nationalists at that time in the then occupied Ireland The Fenians and their like were regarded as heroes. If after 700 years they hadn't killed the Irish love and regard for their patriots then why would you expect that they would have killed it in the last 100. If anything continued occupation would have kept their memory more precious as can be evidenced by the much stronger support for Republicanism that emanates from the North compared to the South. Their memory is more in danger now from the revisionists who live here in the South, some of who post regularly on this very forum. corkcelt (Cork) - Posts: 4388 - 03/07/2009 21:53:27 331560 Link 0 |

Well my young Tipp friend hopefully there are a couple of more of your generation better informed after reading this thread. There are some on this forum who would ban all chat about our history, but the point you make in your post convinces me that there is a place for it on a GAA forum. corkcelt (Cork) - Posts: 4388 - 03/07/2009 22:30:35 331597 Link 0 |
