Junior League and Championship

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Good to see a lot of interest in the junior league and championship. Lann Leire looking strongest team so far and beat Finbarrs by 5 points to win Kevin Mullen shield. Anyone at that game?? How did Togher do? Togher lost first two championship games so will be interesting to see how they get on next against the Kevins in 2 weeks. There seems to be 5-6 teams going very well in the league. Dundalk YI would be favourites and seem to be flying at the moment as do Fechins, Dunleer and Kevins. YI look like they will be hard bet in Intermediate champsionship. Didn't think the Kevins would do anything this year but haven't lost a championship or league game yet all be it against weaker opposition. Hunterstown struggling in league and Nicks are strong. See Dowdallshill drew against Wolfe Tones at the weekend. They seem to be struggling badly this year even though the Tones have improved. Glen Emmets beat Stabannon by 1-10 to 1-03 so it seems that any of the better teams could beat one another on any day. Championship will be all to play for and some teams last chance! Championship Matches to be played weekend 13/06/09 John Mitchels - - Dowdallshill Darver 13/06/2009 19:00 Dowdallshill. Mitchells terrible against Stabannon Stabannon Parnells - - St Fechins GAA Grounds 13/06/2009 19:45 Fechins to qualify with this win St Kevins - - Naomh Fionnbarra Darver 13/06/2009 19:45 Finbarrs to shade a tight game Annaghminnon Rovers - - St Mochtas Knockbridge 11/06/2009 19:30 Mochtas to win Sean McDermots - - Westerns Darver 13/06/2009 18:30 Seans to win by a cricket score Lannleire - - Glen Emmets GAA Grounds 13/06/2009 18:30 Dunleer to win tight game Anyone any views or comments...

Kevin mullen shield final was an entertaining game played in front of a decent crowd on a great evening for football.

Dunleer started very well and look a fit side. They were well incontrol of game in early stages even though they were without Farrelly. They should have been further ahead by half time but recorded a high number of wides. Their midfield was well in control and their right half back( Mulroy) awas picking up all the breaks. Right corner forward Paul callan was giving Young mcGrane a torrid time as well. Carlos had an excellent game Barrs for their part kicked a number of efforts short into goalkeepers hand and Osboprne missed a few frees. In second half he redeemed himself with a great goal following a good ball in from Trevor dolan and was unlucky with another effort. However Dunleer upped the pace and improved in their shooting particullarly John Farrelly who hit a few good pones in last quarter and dunleer ran out deserving winners of an enternatining game.

Dunleer won their first trophy in 15 years and on the basis of this young fit side they could well lhave at least another one beside it before the end of the year, as they are well in contention in both competitions albeit the early stages of both.

Bars seem to have an over reliance on Osborne to score and other forwards will have to step up tp the mark if they are to make an impression in championship - will probably have to win their last 3 games to qualify and that is very achievable. Will win enough games in league to surive as every team in intermediate seem caable of taking points off the other and most games are won or lost by very small margins.

Not much chance of a neutral seeing many matches, they all seem to be on at the same time. Any chance switching a couple to a double header on Friday evening. Then again its only Junior football, the top brass don't care who sees it. How about Sunday @ 3.00 you might be surprised how many will not be in Parnell Park.

Heard a few Stabannon lads are heading away for the summer - Colin Quinn, Young Halpenny, Paidi Lynch and one or two others. Seeing that they were well beaten in their last league game against the Glen Emmets, you'd have to wonder whether they'll have the strength in their squad. Aonghus Giggins supposed to be coming back from Oz in July I think so that'll strengthen them up. It'll be interesting to see how they get on against the Fechins in their next match...

Couple of interesting double headers in the Junior Matches. Dunleer Vs Glen Emmets - Hard to see Dunleer being bet but Emmets will certainly put it up to them. Kevins Vs Finbarrs will be close afair - Kevins are moving well but will their defence be able to hold Toghers forward line. Barrs look a bit creaky and confidence there can't be high.

Below is fixture list for the weekend in JFC. If Glen Emmets beat Dunleer then Dunleer would be in real bother. It is gonna be a tight group. Mochtas and Seans will walk their games.

Junior Football Championship Group A
Team 1 Team 2 Venue Date Time Referee Comment

Annaghminnon Rovers St Mochtas Knockbridge 11/06/2009 19:30 Paul Finnegan
Lannleire Glen Emmets GAA Grounds 12/06/2009 19:30 Gerry Malone
Sean McDermots Westerns Darver 13/06/2009 18:30 Tommy McEnteggart

Stabannon and Fechins will be tight affair. Reckon Fechins will just shade it. Kevins and Finbarrs probably toss of a coin - bigger field in Darver probably suit the Finbarrs better. Other game is irrelevant.

Junior Football Championship Group B
Team 1 Team 2 Venue Date Time Referee Comment

John Mitchels Dowdallshill Darver 13/06/2009 19:00 Paddy Matthews
Stabannon Parnells St Fechins GAA Grounds 13/06/2009 19:45 Paul Kneel
St Kevins Naomh Fionnbarra Darver 13/06/2009 19:45 Thomas Byrne

Annaghminnon Rovers 1-3 1-16 St Mochtas. Good, high scoring by the mochtas, as expected though. The Seans should be able to beat the Westerns comfortably enough, but will be looking to achieve a big score if they want to top the group, because if them and dunleer win their remaining games then they'll be on even points. Glen Emmets will be looking to keep on thier unbeating run against dunleer having scored 2-13 and 1-13 in their last 2 outings.

Predections:
Seans to beat Westerns
Dunleer to beat Glen Emmets. Tight game though

Dunleer 0-07: Glen Emmets 0-13

Was at the game last night with Dunleer and have to say they were well beaten by a better team. Emmets dominated the middle of the field for the entire match and Dunleer were starved of possession up front. Emmets looked very much the running team and had a lot of possession. Dunleer seemed to have better players on the bench than on the field - not sure why. They struggled to hold onto possession and seemed to run the ball into corners a lot of the time rather than play direct ball into their forward line. Dunleer missed a lot of frees in the first half and were behind 0-05 to 0-02 at half time playing against the wind.

They'll be under pressure to beat the Mochtas to qualify now. Assuming they'll beat the Westerns well. Emmets almost certain of qualifying and won't be easily beaten - looked a very mobile team.

Was surprised at how poor Lannleire were but was impressed with Glen Emmets. Decent levels of fitness and I thought Noone and Bracken both looked very good. 3 from 3 for the Emmets which should see them qualify. Huge next game for Lannleire against the Mochtas but if they play the same way they'll be making an early exit.

I see in group B St Kevins and St Fechins both have 3 from 3 as well. Good win for the Kevins against the Barrs, was anyone at that game ? what has happened to the Barrs ?
Fechins seem to be ticking along nicely with 3 good wins - up against the Kevins next and that will decide who tops the group!

Kevins won by 3 points. Was a scrappy game and Kevins had a man sent off with 10 mins to go. Finbarrs lucky not to have one of the Osbournes sent off. Finbarrs were a point ahead at half time but

Finbarrs missed a good few frees and will be disappointed they lost but Kevins looked a hungrier team especially in the second half and probably deserved to win in the end.

Stabannon beaten by the Fechins by 2 points and think were unlucky to lose it in the end. They were leading for most of the game and conceded a penalty. Was a draw coming to the end of the game but the Fechins scored a few late points.

Dowdallshill had good win against the Mitchells. If they beat Stabannon in their next game they could still be in with a shout with their last match against Togher.

im quite surprised at how much the emmets beat lannleire by. i wasnt at the game but on hearing and reading reports its sounds as if the emmets were on fire! my work colleague who knows a few of the lannleire lads said their bench was just as strong as there first 15 which someone else has just pointed out above???surely this couldnt be the case, if it is then their management needs to be questioned. well done to the kevins another surprise i would have to say!!! any predictions on possible winners of the championship????

Im surprised myself about Lannleire, if the mochtas beat them in their next game then they could be looking at an early exit. Fair play to Glen Emmets, they seem to be playing some good, fast, clean football at the min from what im hearing but have 2 though games remaining in the group, although with their form they could come out of the group unbeating. The Seans will struggle to beat Glen Emmets if they play as they did against the westerns which was very poor, but i didn't think they'd still be unbeatin at this stage to be honest so i'll not be beting against them just yet! Not sure about Dunleer V Mochtas, probably going to say Dunleer, but its anybodys game! As for Westerns V Annaghminnon Rovers i don't know, depends if the Westerns can pull a team together! Bit strange that they couldn't field a team 3 weeks ago and yet appeared to have a panel of at least 25 against the Seans sat night.....

Was at Stabannon and Feckins game saturday feckins looking good very fit and are playing nice football and can mix it. Stabannon were hard hitting but feckins stood up well. Question is how is young Richard mcdonnell not on the starting 15 he was on the Louth minor team and he can't get on the termonfeckin team it does not make any sense. The two devlins played very as did young Holcroft scoring. Half forwards did very well doing tracking back and helping out the backs. A Young lad came on in place off mcnally and did well. Says it all really Young mcdonnell was on the louth team and can't get on and mcnally has started two of the championship games i saw and done nothing. Nothing against tony kearney but he and his selectors will cop on when it is to late. I'm sure there is more footballers in team than him nothing against him but he dose not offer much to the team as a whole. The useual suspect played well again mcglew and fanning.

Have to agree with Maher how young mcdonnell isnt gettin his game is beyond me - goes to show that is in not how good you are but how much your liked in that club - who could imagine that a young lad on the louth minor team for 2 years in a row cant his place in a junior club. Tony kearney should not be influenced in any way by club members and should play players on their ability and nothing else. Some of those selected before mcdonnell dont make the grade.
