Goalkeeper is one of the most important positions in football. He needs to have a good kick out which he can vary left or right, long or short, he must be agile have had good ball handling skills and must be able to command and instruct the backs in front of them and be alert to suituations developing. centre half back-stop attacks coming through, win breaking ball, usually marking one of best players on the field and a good one also can get forward too. beer baron (Cavan) - Posts: 3916 - 08/04/2009 14:51:28 252042 Link 0 |

I know you said position in the singular, but I believe if you have the upperhand down the centre of the field you will win 90% of games. I am talking about the spine of the team, Goalkeeper, Full Back, Centre Back, Midfield, Centre Forward and Full forward. Before every game when I peruse my programme that is the area I always compare both teams right down the centre. corkcelt (Cork) - Posts: 4388 - 08/04/2009 15:14:55 252067 Link 0 |
Wouldn't agree with you there, Derry ledd but then as the bold Brendan Behan used to say every tinker has his own way of dancing. corkcelt (Cork) - Posts: 4388 - 08/04/2009 15:32:29 252104 Link 0 |

Maybe there is no longer a most important position but the ability to play multiple roles. To be fair to your original thread I will have to say midfilder as they can have the greatest impact on the game. Sure a game can be won by breaking ball but only when the half backs and forwards are better than the opposition. A good midfeilder ensures that primary possession is won regulary and the scrap for what should be 50/50 ball is not contested. Clean won ball can be moved quickly and attacks created before defences begin to swarm. Forwards will still have the space to take the scores. Good fast and accurate distribution of a ball can make forwards look good. The midfielder also has the ability to stand on the goal line in defence and clear balls. The sight of Anthony Tohill denying Antrim a free on the goaline above the bar which would have given them an shock championship win a number of years ago comes to mind. When I look down the recent years of Tyrone games Tohill, McGrane, O Se, Whelan were the players which always worried me most. If the midfield battle could be won - the game was well on its way to victory regardless of the forwards of the opposition. John Boss (Tyrone) - Posts: 865 - 08/04/2009 21:11:46 252444 Link 0 |

Half back line and midfield..you'll control the game if you dominate them positions. Gaillimh2 (Galway) - Posts: 155 - 09/04/2009 14:29:38 253169 Link 0 |
In the past centre back or centre field but if you look at Tyrone now positions don't mean anything they have won 3 AIs and it hard to remember their midfielders catching any clean ball. They have an excellent CB but more often than not he picks up the most dangerous forward the opposition have and its hard to know who actually plays in that position the whole game as far as the middle 3rd is concerned is very fluid forward defend and wingbacks attack and often get better chances and score more than wing forwards. The only positions which remain fixed are 2 inside forwards and 2 inside backs so in the modern game for me these are the most important positions. chainsaw (Laois) - Posts: 712 - 09/04/2009 16:15:23 253294 Link 0 |
The Bus Driver..........lets face it lads, the team wouldnt even be at the match if there was no one to drive the bus. Fredthered (Donegal) - Posts: 1144 - 09/04/2009 16:27:53 253309 Link 0 |
