232294 duffy your right about everton.sure dosent the KOP in anfield stand for king over pope?or is that another urban myth.

I think that the KOP (King over Pope) in anfield is a myth just. Although I have heard it mentioned a few times, but it was only a bit of banter between a few friends.

toma007 The initial thread was a misconception, Rangers are not doing anything. Maybe of interest to historians. Initially Rangers were not at all a sectarian Club and were very helpful to the fledgling Celtic Club. Then thousands of shipyard workers came over from Belfast to work in Scottish shipyards in World war 1, when they saw Celtic as an Irish Catholic Club, they then hitched their wagon to Rangers. They quickly established a total anti Catholic bias, which in reality lasts till today amongst their supporters even though the Clubs Official policy is now anti sectarian.. For many years Rangers would not even employ a tea lady if she was Catholic. And when the famous Celtic Manager Jock Stein (himself a Protestant) was asked if they were 2 equally talented kids 1 Catholic and 1 protestant, which would he sign, he immediately said the Protestant, Why? Because I know Rangers wont sign the Catholic. From the very begining Celtic were non sectarian and always played a mixed team. I think twas Tommy Gemmell said about The Lisbon Lions we were 7 fish and 4 meat. Hail Hail all, heres hoping the Celts prevail tomorrow.

Aye, I believe your right. It has something to do with all the scousers who died in the Boer War. The Kop was named after the Spion Kop hill in S. Africa were the scousers died.

that is true about everton being a catholic club.although nowadays it is not as bitter as in glasgow, talk to any old time scouser who was around in the 50's or 60's and they still have the catholic/protesant feeling in them.liverpool are a protestant club and i think it is very funny when irish people wear there jerseys.being realistic its only a rangers jersey in disguise. sorry liverpool fans(or rangers fans really) i'm only telling the truth.

toma007 The clue is in the name friend. An earlier post discussing foreign Clubs with a possible Irish connection mentioned Celta Vigo. Celtic played them in a European game a few years ago,a game which I attended. Vigo is in Spain in an area known as Gallicia, and the locals like the Basques see themselves as a bit different from the general Spanish population. There is a movement there seeking autonomy but it is in no way as strong as the Basque one. They have a strong affinity to Ireland and you wouldn't believe the welcome we got. As our bus was approaching Vigo there were children and old ladies waving Irish tricolours at the side of the road. There were also teenagers holding up political slogans which in the light of recent events in the North, I wont mention the contents . But overall it was a fantastic experience and these lads out there seemed to have no problem identifying Celtic with Ireland.

superdub You are 100% correct. At that time all major City's in the north of England up to Glasgow split into Orange and Green teams. This was probably influenced by the large Irish population from both parts of Ireland that went there during the war years. In Liverpool, twas Liverpool Prot. and Everton C. in Manhester, City Prot. United, Cath. In Bermingham, Berm. City Prot. and Aston Villa Cath. and u know about Glasgow.

Kop does mean king over pope, even me history teacher used to say that and that man knew his stuff

Spion Kop, Boer war.

Everton were known as the "catholic" team in Liverpool.

Man United wanted to call themselves Manchester Celtic, can't remember why they changed their mind.

And Gordon Strachen should be asked to resign due to his clear breach of Equal Opportunities legislation last week. Religious differences may have been settled, but we still hate, and are terrified of, women.

Duffy it may well have become abbreviated as such afterwards but there are many stadia in the world with a "Kop". Spion Kop in S. Africa (where Boer war was fought) is known for its steep gradient and therefore a lot of stadia use this name for stand and terrace areas as they too are steep.

Afraid PAO were not set up by an Irishman. Their hostiliy to Rangers is probably what greats all away teams at their cauldron in Athens.

But is all this relevant?

patrique. i know using big words makes you feel clever but the fact is you arnt. milan were never supported by the english, or set up for the english, they were never set up to help english immigrants and never claimed to be english

celtic on the other hand, their supporters were all irish at the start, and now its their descendats from irish diaspora that support them who have irish heritage and irish blood, their supporters in glasgow claim celtic to be irish, id say a good 50% also support ireland generally, their founder set them up to help the poor irish in glasgow (not scottish people), and brother walfrid also said they were a team for the people of ireland still living there to also support. they also fly tri-colous, leave cards on supporters seats to make a giant tri-colour (not satire or union jack), sing rebel songs, their strip is green and white, their crest is a clover which is a type of shamrock (which is one of irelands national symbols) etc. etc. all this points are still as strong today e.g they still fly the tri-colour everywhere etc.

but of course milans english history is on par with this

regards 32_4_1 who is waiting on patriques next sarcastic "clever" reply
