Rangers help GAA in Glasgow!!!

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

der bomber Celtic fans do have an amazing reputation across Europe. They are the most sought after team in Britain for friendlies because of their fans, after the EUFA Cup Final in Seville the European Football Governing body were so impressed by the fans behaviour that in an unprecedented gesture the entire Celtic fan base were awarded The European Fair Play Award. After a game in Villareal the locals were so impressed that they started a Villareal Celtic Fan Club also an Annual Celtic festival in which they issue an open invitation to all Celtic fans worldwide to attend and put on concerts with Irish music etc. The Celtic fan base in Scotland is primarily descendants of emigrants from the North East of Ireland Sligo to Donegal who were forced to flee this country after the famine. They are extremely proud and faithful to their Irish roots and strongly support everything Irish including the GAA. After Tyrones All Ireland win, when Peter Canavan was captain Tyrone were invited over to Glasgow to parade the Sam Maguire at Parkhead and received a rapturous reception. I can appreciate you may have little interest in Soccer but if you don't know about something then say nothing at all.

222452 It's nice to see tomaoo7 actually post something on here instead of 'tagging' a comment on end of someone elses, however judging by the standard of the grammar and general body of the thread methinks that my favourite WUM is guilty of some plaigerism, would I be right in saying so? methinks ;;;;well brendan good to see you have more interest in tomaoo7, then this thread im honoured

Tomaoo, I've just read your second post up there and still fail to see any details. You have said that Rangers have used their extensive range of community workers. In what way? Are the club actively spending money and time to further the ideals of the GAA? I'm sorry, but there is a lack of detail to this story that suggests token statment on behalf of the Rangers club.

Celtic played Fulham in a pre season friendly... Their fans caused havoc!!! In the words of a good friend who travelled over there to see it, "they played F**K!!"

222189 IT'S probably the last place on earth that you would expect to find Gaelic games being promoted.

But Glasgow Rangers are now helping the GAA to promote the nationalist sports of Gaelic football and hurling.

What's nationalist about gaelic football and hurlin, granted a lot of nationalists play them, but i would think the games could best be described as field games, Played by people of all political persuasions.

Contrast that with the rioting of rangers fans in Manchester before, during and after the UEFA cup final last year. That's just one stark comparision, i could provide more if necessary but that should suffice. Celtic fans are in no way as bad a rangers fans, nowhere near it. Well said Monaghan and exactly right. Irish people seem to think that if Rangers do something bad then we must attack Celtic!! Don't follow that logic but there you have it. anywa, back to the thread...small step but very welcome.

The Revolution I am aware of the game you refer to. I have heard various reports of what happened . A cousin of mine was at the game and told me that in the first case Celtic fans were attacked by National Front members. There were a few London Irish in the area as well and I do believe that there were a few skirmishes and some of the combatants were wearing Celtic colours. It did not receive much press but of course any incident of that nature is regretable, this type of behaviour is very much the exception as far as Celtic Supporters are concerned. Their attitude is very much like the Irish Supporters. They drink, sing songs and by and large make friends. Of course with a world wide fan base of 500,000 there are bound to be a few bad apples but in general these guy's are the salt of the earth.

I have attended pretty much every Celtic game in London over the last few years. The incidents at Fulham that I were witnessed were at Putney Bridge and were the result of serious provocation from BNP/NF lads causing trouble.

The same thing happened at Tottenham a few years earlier where the Seven Sisters Road was like a mini warzone with these racist lunatics looking to pick fights with any Celtic fans. Men, women and children. It was disgusting.

A decent police presence at QPR away most recently meant there was no trouble whatsoever. And a cracking result to boot.

The only game I didn't actually get to attend (despite having a ticket) was the Chelsea game as the police kept us in Kings Cross station for our own safety as London's hooligan firms had combined in an effort to attack Celtic supporters.

Is this just a Celtic thing and maybe some posters are correct in that Celtic cause trouble as well as their near neighbours, Rangers? Well the Rep of Ireland have a fantastic reputation yet I watched some charming London lads try and provoke some of our fans into aggro at the Ireland v Colombia match at Craven Cottage. Again a decent police presence at the scene meant the trouble was quashed early and it became the bnp vs the met police much to the bemusement of us Irish and Colombians. Who were fantastic supporters by the way.

Fair points lads. Regarding Irish fans though... Well... What can I say... More of our fans are turning sour... Booing etc... And many LOI teams have 'Ultras' firms... I go to every home Ireland game... Was never so ashamed when I heard them boo Stan... An Irish footballing legend... Then they boo us at hgalf time in the Georgia game?? Pathetic... Sad day...

I assumed the booing at half time in the Georgia game was at the ref and linesman for disallowing potentiel Irish goal.

Why do Rangers fans go to see Celtic when they are playing in Europe? Is it to attack the Milan goalkeeper to try to get Celtic barred from Europe?

Well I know it wasn't the Saintly Celtic fans that attacked this foreign gentleman. Never.

Corkcelt, that's not true... Wasn't just booing. So called fans shouting horrible stuff at the players... 40 minutes later they were up singing OLE OLE OLE!!! Nice one patrique ;)

Ed and Corkcelt are absolutly right in what there saying and the facts they mention, to class Rangers supporters and Celtic supporters in the same bracket is scandelous after there carry on in Manchester last year. And as Cork Celt already pointed out there is a Celtic supporters club in Villerreal Barcelona have also a Celtic supporters club. Ask Barca fans what they think of Rangers and there fans the way they behave

Amazing! This thread I believe was started in good faith and attempted to highlighted a samll but good gesture on the behalf of rangers. yet it has descended into the predictable.

There is no doubt that even from a neutral point of view Rangers have the most appaling racist image in Europe. celtic, on the other hand, have won awards for their fair play and apart form a few drunken louts, who are everywhere, their behavious is almost exemplary. Obviously when they meet rangers all of that is off.

Why then do irish people feel the need to abuse Celtic when it is rangers who have the appalling record. And as for the guy trying to equate booing at half time of the georgia match with rangers racism...well that's just plain iditoic!!!

Yawn, one fan out of 60,000 supporters. Interesting to note the ban recieved by that Milan goalkeeper for that so called 'attack'.

hold on a second corkcelt,i have a massive interest in soccer and i would have a knowledge more advanced than a lot of people.my tongue was placed firmly in cheek when i spoke about celtic fans..as someone who has been to a few of their games and knows some people who live in glasgow i would have to say that some of the songs i heard them sing and their behaviour was completely racist.yes celtic have a huge fan base and a lot of great fans i accept that but they are a club whose fans have a serious affiliation to the conflict in the north and some of their chants reflect that..i have seen this myself.i know celtic football club have tried to stamp this out in the last few years but a minority of fans still won't change.

UEFA Cup Final 2003 - Celtic Lose - Fans get a Fair Play Award

UEFA Cup Final 2008 - Rangers Lose - Fans wreck Manchester!!!!

I won't list the other examples of Rangers fans such as UEFA fines and Nazi salutes at away matches, I am comparing like with like. And No, Celtic fans are not saintly but their behaviou has been commended in Europe and these sort of incidents do not plague the club as they do with rangers.

Now come on, this thread started in commneding rangers for taking a small step. Lets keep that spirit going?
