maybe i havent seen enough of them but from last years minors and this years u21s only william crawford really stood out out of the players mentioned. they are as good as what is around i suppose but that just speaks for the state of longford football i think.
i agree that drumlish cant be written off in any given match but to win the whole thing out is a out of the equation completely. id give them another 2/3 years before they can be considered, when their younger players mature a bit more.

khafelnikov if you saw the training Slashers have been doing for the last few months you wouldn't be saying that they don't care about the game. There are people in Slashers whose commitment to the GAA has no bounds.

Granted ChungLad. There are some serious footballing families in Slashers, some of the best GAA ambassadors in the county, but Jimmy Gacquin can do all the training he wants but he won't get a resonse from the same talented Slashers players who have never fulfilled potential. My views are based on the amount of good minor players who fade away and Slashers players who have never made it with Longford. Obviously the Barrins, Brady's, Smiths, McRory, Glendenning, Ghee,Dobson and Phillips are always gonna be represented but out of the rest, none will have football as their no.1 prioit this year.Very harsh and will annoy a few Slashers fans but other posters i'm sure will side with my views. I feel very poor for Sean Connollys who are really gonna struggle this year with 8 or 9 1st teamers not available. tough times lie ahead.

khafaelnikov you listed 11 players there who you claim to have the talent/attitude, so its 4 others that are disrupting the townies chances is it?? you are completely contradicting yourself and talking through your hat - 11 players is a high proportion to have well committed and skilled.

Agree with much of your point Khafelnikov. While Slashers are training well at moment traditionally they and most other urban teams are not willing to "eat grass" to win championships.Remember the keepy uppy episode at half time in county final last year? The difference in attitude between Colmcille players and Slashers that day was incredible. I believe Clonguish and Ballymahon are somewhat similar in their overall lack of application with again a couple of big name GAA families doing all they can to achieve success but many others in both clubs only partially committed. Little wonder that last four championships won by rural clubs; Dromard, Abbey and Colmcille. However with many rural clubs struggling to keep players during these challenging times clubs like Slashers,Clonguish and Ballymahon may suffer less from player loss in construction type jobs and could pick up a handy title at the expense of their emmigration ravaged rural opponents. I know Sean Connolly's and Colmcille are badly hit at present.

Interesting point SlasherNavy, some of the rural clubs seem badly affected alright with the exception of Abbey and maybe Dromard. The winning of the championship could come down to which club copes best with the recession.Wins for Clonguish,Slashers,Abbey,Dromard,Ballymahon and Rathcline this weekend.Draw in Ardagh.

11 out of 15 is far from enough Dromard Abu. You should know. In 2007, which 4 of Sheridan, Vance, Pettit, 2 Conefries, 2 McENtires, 2 Sheridans, 2 mastersons, mcgee, mimnagh, martin, donohoe, and Reynolds weren't committed to the cause. Exactly. and last year it was 15 men from Colmcille that outfought Slashers. 15 and the subs as well. Every lad possessed and nobody holding back. Players like jp reilly, Francis Kavanagh and Tommy Doyle playing way above themselves. Thats what Slashers need. They have got to 2 finals in previous years so quality is there, attitude is the problem among the minority, but an essential minority if a team is to succeed. I dont have a problem with Slashers In a way I would like them to succeed because a county needs a good town team and support from town folk to flourish. im off in germany at the moment with work(no recession here) would just like to know how any of the longford minors from last year are doing in the league? any noteworthy progress or performances by them?
i presume most if not all of them would be well established starters now in their respective clubs

there seems to be a lot of giving out done about slashers.at the end of the day, anyone really can win the longford championship.its all on the day, loads of the "best" teams have lost to weaker opposition on any one day, remember mostrim beating dromard?? the fact is slashers could win this year's championship, people sayin that some of their players lack bite, fight etc. would these be the same people who said last year that there Colmcille hadnt got the bottle to win a championship?? Exactly!! Its difficult to know with the group structure how it works out, but i would definitely expect slashers to be there or there abouts, along with the usual suspects. Abbey bet slashers last week which is fair enough and they apparently played well, but the fact is slashers (as with lots of teams) are never any good in the league. Abbey missin a few players but apparently Slashers are missing loads too. Phillips, P Kelly, P Brady, D Brady, Tarmey, McRory, Sheridan, Mulligan all out for Colmcille game. Colmcille to get their first two points tonight!!

I hear what your saying iknowmystuff but i really think they have gotta pick it up soon. More league games this year means teams performing well pre championship will have big advantage and confidence going into the championship. Think this years league is little different to previous years....

Here's my predictions for this week:
Slashers COLMCILLE.....colmcille
Drumlish ABBEYLARA Monaduff...go for the windys here with home adv and abbey being without county players
Sean Connollys CLONGUISH...connollys mite actually pip under strength clonguish here
COLUMBAS RATHS...home win
St Patricks Mostrim...Ardagh win
Dromard St Marys.....Draw game
Emmet Og Ballymahon...Away win

khafelnikov some of what you say is very true as Slashers produce many class players when they are around 14-18 but then they fade off. Slashers had as equally as talented a minor team as Northern Gaels last year but the fact that N. Gaels had good few loads playin senior and that more of them would 'go through hell and back' to win something proved the major difference between the teams.

Slashers had a very good minor team in 2004 and 05 but didn't win anything, apart from a league, many of those players (alot were very talented) not challenging hard enough for Slashers Seniors now. In my opinion there is a serious problem in the club with players failing off, Dromard hockeyed us in u-21 last year wbut on paper we should have been much better. Despite that there are plenty of fanatical GAA people in Slashers too but I would argue that Clonguish have a worse attitude than Slashers and they are definitely softer.

you would be surprised khafaelnikov, its practically impossible to get 15 FULLY committed men and then to get the talent along with it. the likes of bull, jamesie, frankie and cian mimnagh really pulled us through in 07.
what youre saying about slashers though is that kelly, mulligan, sheridan arent good enough?? they were the names you ommitted. id love to have them in dromard!!

Was at Slashers/Colmcille game last night. Well done to Colmcille on a hard fought win. They played good football in second half to pull away from Slashers. Hopefully they can push on from here and get a couple of more wins under their belt and get the confidence back up.
Also noticed at half time the Slashers subs were brushing up on their soccer skills when they were crossing and heading/volleying the ball into the goals similar to the half time antics at last years county final. Things havent changed!!
