County ground towns and places to go out!!

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

After the shopping in Ballybofey and before the match, Heaney's Dew Drop Inn around the corner from McElhinney's is a nice wee pub.
Even if it was open beside Healy Park, I'd advise walking on past Molly Sweeney's into Omagh town centre. Myles McCann's and Sally's on John Street are excelllent Omagh pubs - Sally's for the craic and McCann's for as good a pint of stout as you'll find north of the border. (It's way past time we had a cross-border body with executive powers to harmonise the pint on both sides of the border!)
Back home in Monaghan, Clones now has fewer pubs than I remember from years back, but there's still a great selection on match days. The Paragon at the top of Fermanagh Street is a hub of craic on match days - a firm favourite for younger visitors - while the Lennard Arms on the far side of The Diamond is a very worthy retreat for more discerning GAA fans.
In Derry City, any of the pubs on William Street (Peadar O'Donnell's etc) are well worth a visit, but be ready to explain that you're there for a football match in Celtic Park and not the Brandywell. That'll be news to most of them!
In Enniskillen, it's hard to beat the quaint interior of Blake's of the Hollow, but the big gathering before matches in Brewster Park is usually centred on Belmore Street at venues like Willie Ramblers.
Despite the stout defence of Casement by Antrim Gaels, Belfast is certainly not a good venue for the craic and if you go into the city, then you really are out of the GAA scene - unless that is you head across to the Queen's University area, I'm told, by which time you would probably already be home in your local. A reasonable option as a meeting place for a pint is the Andytown Social Club, across the carpark at the back of Duffy's pub on Andersonstown Road (which is too small for comfort).
In Newry, the bar of the Canal Court Hotel is a good gathering spot, but it's a fair hike to the Marshes.
Lots of good venues for Armagh matches in Crossmaglen - my choice was always Short's - but I'm holding fire on a recommendation now that the Athletics Ground is reopened in Armagh City. I should know better after this weekend!

I'd hazard a guess you've been on the 3rd floor a fair bit

And whats in Laois....Nothing,the only good thing to come out of that place is the road out of it

Thats actually Waterloo street Borderboy, but your spot on best place for pubs in derry.

As the GAA is still in its infancy in derry city there would be no real GA pubs as such. Like you say though paeders would be as close as you can get. (Also a severe lack of championship games in derry over the years, but thats another story)

see ya in may :)

williewentwell , didn't know Molly Sweeneys had closed down. Was only there the once mind you (THAT day when there was outbreaks of football between the fighting @ Healy Park!) Seemed like a decent enough bar.

Re Peader O'Donnells in Derry , great bar with some good trad music as well. Just don't make the mistake of going to any bars on London St cause you might not be made too welcome!! A group of Bohemians soccer ''fans'' decided to smash it up a few years ago in their contribution to the ''fight for freedom!!'' Other decent bars in near to Celtic Park would be The Don Bar on Creggan Street and if your looking for cheap booze and a some microwaved cuisine then Wotherspoons in the Diamond or the Ice Wharf on the Strand Rd are an option , although football colours aren't allowed in either.

wouldn't bother trying to go into any pubs in Monaghan Town after a match in clones as the door staff will turn you away if your wearing any County colours , you might find a spit and sawdust pub that would let you in?

Being a Meathman i hate to say it but Navan is not that great of a spot, too many people (men and women) with large ego's and too many posers!!

None in Derry city,The only pubs near the ground have a Candy stripe football flavor, the nearest Gaa pub is either in Donegal of foreglen.

I think maybe i should drink less.

They have a bed on the top floor of the Music Factory (or at least they used to, I'm more of a Stores man myself) maybe you fell asleep there?

Nothing near Dr. Cullen Park but two factories, Braun and Lapple, and Lapple is closed, so you may bring a six pack and a tin whistle.
