175741 Agree wth you S Man, Hurling is a far superior game...................

Its a great game no doubt but this superior attitude is on of the reasons its in decline, in any aspect of life if you keep getting the line something is superior to what you hold in esteem you just grow to at best ignore it. What chance has a coach got trying to get kids to hurl if he starts off by telling them that the game they are already god at is inferior. Maybe the handful of strong counties have no real interest in spreading the game

Patrique, cracking up here!! four or five all in riots and a few sent off!!! I think you just described west limerick hurling there to a tee!! great stuff!!

And as for the tyrone man I have hurled after a feed of pints, one morning over in England... scored 7 points and to this day cant remember what colour jersey the opposition was wearing!!!! awful awful standard I will admit!!!!

And to the LAois man, Iv played on many a bad team in hurling and its still a harder game to play and way more skilful than football at all levels... Not saying that I dont admire the artistry of someone like the Gooch or Maurice Fitzgerald in his hey day, but the likes of King Henry and the Joe Show just take my breath away.... awesome

Hurling is coolio. But don't understand why so many from the hurling fraternity see the need to put football down at every opportunity. A lot of hurling folk seem to hate football whereas the majority of football people have nothing but respect for the game of hurling.

Are you for real RMD??? Some of the most insulting posts I have ever read on these boards have been from football loving hurling hating folk! And most of them are from *cough * cough*! There is even a Camogophile here who's posts get dissed as he fights a lone battle in defence of the women with sticks!

I honestly believe it's different JC. You have fools from *cough cough* and everywhere else saying that they have no interest in hurling but that is different than saying you hate it. And thats the bit I don't understand about hurling. It's as if hurling can only be great if football is ridiculed. Whereas the truth of course is that hurling is it's own magnificance and needs no ones approval or sanction.

altough im not on to talk about hurling as my own counties squad's only requirement for their hurlers is to own a hurl......il stop while im ahead!
i would still say hurling is a joy to watch!such skill!

Hurling is ok but i prefer football. Its what you are brought up with and where you are brought up. I wont run hurling down as i played it too but just preferred football.

Ah now I have seen a good few from *cough *cough and elsewhere ridiculing hurling. And yes some UHFs (Ultra Hurling Folk) do lay it on as the only game in the world and few are from *cough * cough! I love my football - was an average hurler (left handed hurler with a right handed hurl - my excuse) - but I think the ould iománaíocht is the fastest and most skillful field game in the world. A good game of hurling is nearly as good as a feed of pints - nearly!

As a football man, I'll have to admit that hurling is the best game in the world. But for those who describe football as slow, then ye don't have a clue. Obviously its not as quick as hurling but its still a way quicker game than rugby or soccer. Football is a seriously quick game. Doesn't depend on skill as much, work-rate and doggedness is very important although the basic skills is necessary. Every team who wins anything has 'scoring forwards' who make the game look easy (ie) the Gooch, Stephen McDonnell, Michael Meehan

Think hurling played at a high level is a joy to watch. The skills displayed are breathtaking and really i'd b in awe of a lot of the stars.

however, i dont think the same of the average junior match. i find the game is not exciting when played at this level and the skills are often fairly poor. that's not to say that those who play at this level shouldnt enjoy the game or take pride in their involvment, just that i dont particularly enjoy watching the "weaker" teams play.

I'd rather watch a junior football match than a junior hurling one, pehaps because football is clearly an easier game to play and therefore the junior footballers are a lot closer to the elite in terms of skill level than their hurling counterparts.

But sure each to their own!

all rite JC, RMdrive

quit running down the *Cough* *Cough* county! (By the way whats with the code, Eagleland influence perhaps?)

I will admit that hurling at the very best is a superior game. When its poor its a torrid affair. If you asigned a entertainment value to every game of hurling and football played at intercounty level the averages would probably be very similar, ie Most gaelic matches are quite entertaining, few are excellent and few are very poor. Hurling is either mostly excellent or mostly poor.

BUt that is beside the point, i see the passion in hurling and i dont admire the skill but more the determination/courage in each double, strike or block. At certain times when my defences momentairly lapse i wish Tyrone were challengers at hurling at the expense of the football.

PS: I derive suprisingly extremely little joy from watching Kilkenny. They just seem so artificial or mechanical, they play with their minds and not their hearts and it just seems so cold. But when i watch less successful teams i admire their play much more. Thinking of Ken Mcgrath, Foley (limerick), Fitzhenry, Eoin Kelly(tipp), Davy Fitz, sean og, molumphy, ollie moran or canning. Anyone else find Kilkenny matches/play disappointing or boring?

As I said already everyone is entitled to their opinion an as can be seen from the comments hurling people truly believe that hurling is a superior game to all others. I have watched a good number of bad hurling games in my time also an indeed played or should I say took part in a good few also and I don't agree that a bad hurling game is still better than any good football game.Cork and Kilkenny arguably the best 2 teams right now played a pretty woe full semi last year which is beginning to happen in hurling as well when 2 teams try to limit space for the opposition like football .....was that a better game than Cork v Kerry..... Kerry v Galway......Tyrone v Kerry not in my opinion.

On a connected note a man from Kilkenny told me recently the only reason they field a senior football team (O Byrne Cup) each year is because it entitles them to an extra 5000 tickets for the hurling final isn't that something else.
