Galway minors 2009:

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Just seen this thread, posted on the other one earlier,

Sligo have selected a decent team, should be a good contest, i cant see our lads rolling over too easy as there is good players in there, keep an eye out D Maye in the forwards. I give our lads every chance but Galway are hot favourites especially at home.

Best of Luck Sligo.

What was the final score? Who impressed and who didn't deliver?

The conditions were very poor so it would be very hard to say anybody played badly. Our full back line did a great job and I thought Gary Sweeney played without making any mistakes. Our midfield won a lot of Sligo's kickouts in the first half. I thought Patrick Sweeney played very well. Despite Cathal scoring the goal which did put us in the lead he really didn't want to pass the ball to other players who were in better position.
A win is a win but if we want to beat Mayo we will have to play better as a team. Well done to Gerry and the rest of the team.

Duane and Gary Sweeney had brilliant games in the back line!they should put Patrick Sweeney in the full forward line against Mayo because he did unreal when he went in today!they have to let the ball in quicker to the full forward line because Monahan looked dangerous every time he got the ball but he didnt get enough of the ball!Steede and O Connell played well midfield i thought!

Sory ta burst the buble lads but galway no great shakes at all ! With no forwards you wil not beat mayo and a decent ref mitent help the cause either !sligo were very unlucky and gt no rub of the green . Its up from here but mayo might have something about that ! Look out for sligo in 2010

I would not worry too much about the performance on a day like that when it was practically impossible to play any decent football in those conditions. It was always going to be a low scoring game in wind and rain like that. I remember Galway minors looked unimpressive in beating Sligo early on in 2007 and they went on to win the All-Ireland that year. Sometimes you just need to get the right result and take it from there. I believe the Galway v Mayo minor game will be on before the Sligo v Galway senior game next month.

Great game by the backs.. Forwards i suppose maybe it was hard to score in them conditions.. But they should defiantly want to be in better form come mayo match. good to get the first match over for them settle a few nerves because from what i've heard and seen this team has great potential

Good win the last day in very tough conditions.Backs were unreal especially the fb line of Duane,Gary Sweeney and Coughlan.Flaherty was also good at times, midf i thought would be a bit better.
Forwards will have to improve definitely.Monaghan was electric at times,Sweeney was average too many wides...O'Curaion was doing fine dont know why he was hauled off?I think it should have been Cunningham instead didnt offer much.Good goal by Cathal Sweeney but he'll have to learn how to pass the ball to other players, and let it go quick.

In order to beat Maigh Eo the forwards will have to improve maybe repositioning Sweeney to full and Monaghan to corner or wing...If backs play half as good as last Saturday theyl have no trouble at all!

of course why didnt i think of that.. move our only good forward on the day out of the position he played in to accomodate the over rated centre forward..genius!

thought full back line was outstanding especially duane and sweeney,
two wing backs very solid bohan in particular i think he would be far better than flaherty at centre back, who in turn would be more suited to midfield.
midfield was ok ,steed doesnt work hard enough for the position and would be more use in half forward line as he can score.
half forward line was poor, two wings not up to it, patrick sweeney too indvidual, needs to be more of a team player.
full forward line, monaghan by far our best forward, looks like he can score every time he gets ball and puts defense under pressure when he doesnt, with faster supply of ball he could be the difference for this team doing anything this year, the guy from moycullen was hard worker more suited to wing and bodkin looked way out of hus depth.
cathal sweeney took goal well after comin on but wouldnt pass to any one after that.
heres what i think should be team the next day.
1 breathnach
2 coughlan
3 duane
4 g sweeney
5 mannion/langan
6 bohan
7 halloran
8 o connell
9 flaherty
10 c sweeney
11 steed
12 lynn
13 take your pick
14 monahan
15 p sweeney

was at the match last saturday and the first thing i gotta say is that the pitch looked in great condition considering all the rain. as for the galway team they looked to be honest, fairly workmanlike , goalie poor kickouts , duane and sweeney in the full back line were excellent , duane a great reader of the game , sweeney good all round, no 4 was nt great , bit slow and wasnt reading the game , half back line no 6 is only average needs to get his head up more when he starts to solo and not take so much out of the ball, no 7 was pretty solid and same for no. 5 , midfield was ok but only ok, some good catches but both need to put in more work, half forward o curraion did well but i would see him as being more suited to the full forwrd position , no 11 never got in to the game in the half forward line mainly because the sligo no. 6 got to him and was let get to him but when he went into the inside line he was one of the main reasons we won, no 12 wasnt great last saturday , the fullforward looked one of our better players but if we play him full forward there is no point pumping in high ball as happened in the second half , think corner may be as position , bodkin never got going and wynne wasnt helped by being moved to midfield in the first half , didnt look as that was planned before the game and also the sligo no 4 hardly let go of his jersey. management werent too good either , let no 6 get away with intimidating half the forward line . why wasnt someone told to sort him out , and there didnt seem to be any clear plan at all. hopefully it was first time out nerves for all concerned but we seem to have some excellent footballers and i think we should mayo next time out.

It was very difficult conditions to play in but i think galway did well to win. Goalies kickouts were good n the 2nd half but in first half it was tough for him because of the wind. The full back line were very solid. Midfield were also good i thought. Monahan was the only forward who could get the ball and do something with it. When C. Sweeney was introduced, he slowed down the game a lot by taking too much out of the ball and he always looked up for his brother Patrick. Wynne wasnt in it at all but his work rate was top class. Bodkin in the corner wasnt good, didnt win anything that got to him. I think they'l have it tough against mayo but i have no doubt that they'll do the business and reach a connacht final.
My team for Mayo:
Braethnach
Coughlan
Duane
G. Sweeney
Flaherty
Bohan
Halloran
Steede
O'Connell
Wynne
P.Sweeney
C. Sweeney
P. O Griofa
Monahan
Conlon

i was watching the challange match last night between the minors and the corofin seniors thought tom healy played well, kick outs were good, got caught out for the goal though seemed to decieve him. Hope he's feelin better got knocked out near the end of the match! He is stil very young he has next year at minor level again! i taught the galway keeper had a good game aswel i dont think it was the keeper that started against sligo in championship made some good saves
