The Master, You obviously are a Man Utd fan so you can see no wrong in what Keane did. I am not a soccer fan so i can see what he did. He did not achieve soccers highest award i.e. World Cup Winner. He turned his back on that chance and chose to walk his dog. A true sportsman would have stayed and played for his country. Cavan_Slasher (Cavan) - Posts: 10253 - 19/10/2008 00:05:10 121912 Link 0 |

As much as the wee dog still tugs at my heart strings I must be serious. Incidentally I was high up in the Cusack stand that day and it must have taken 10 mins to catch him, he was a star and stole the show! The Aussies didn't know whether to kick him or kiss him. Does anyone remember Brush Shiels running around singing that day? Seriously there are only 4 REAL contenders for this, Ronnie Delaney; Michael Carruth; Barry McGuigan and Wayne McCullough. If pushed I would have to say Ronnie Delaney, a Gold medal at an Olympic STAR event against ALL odds. Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9816 - 19/10/2008 02:56:58 121934 Link 0 |
Right lads this could be Flannerys induced ramblings but would Sean Kelly, and I mean the former president, be better for this? Opening up Croker et al? 3inarow08 (Kerry) - Posts: 2455 - 19/10/2008 04:30:21 121939 Link 0 |
Well Dellboy, thats my opinion. McGrath was an absolute legend of a player. He played for his country when he was practically cripled with bad knees. Keane was a was undoubtably a great player but he let himself down too many times. He should have been prepared to put up with anything to play for Ireland in 02 world cup. When it was all over then he could have said his piece about training pitches and barbecues etc. Down and out (Down) - Posts: 65 - 19/10/2008 10:32:52 121945 Link 0 |

Cryff, Maradonna, Pele, BEST. All long past their playing careers and auguments still rage about which of them is/was the worlds greatest soccer player. For an Irishman to get in among the Dutch, Argentinians and Brazilians with our record in soccer -north and south shows the quality of the man as a player. The cause of his death should not take away from the memories he left us doing what he was so good at. No other Irish sportsman/woman is touted as being the best ever in their particular sport. optimist (Louth) - Posts: 188 - 19/10/2008 15:50:38 121991 Link 0 |
Dellboy - Keane twice the player than McGrath or Brady? you must be joking. Keane was a very good player and worked very hard but brady, mcgrath and best were much better footballers. bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4649 - 19/10/2008 15:51:49 121992 Link 0 |

Keiren Fallon has to be mentioned as one of Ireland's sporting greats if you recognise jockeys as sportsmen. Loyal2TheRoyal (Meath) - Posts: 4522 - 19/10/2008 18:48:17 122047 Link 0 |
Dellboy Im not getting in to the rights and wrongs of Saipan, but in a nut shell Keane was right to complain if things werent right but his timing was all wrong. I think that as a nation our greatest ever sports people should be those who have reached the pinnacle of thier chosen sport. Eg Roche, Kelly, Delaney, Harrington. As far as Irish soccer goes there have much more important figures in the game in Ireland and better players than Roy Keane. Down and out (Down) - Posts: 65 - 19/10/2008 19:09:48 122057 Link 0 |
Shouldn't really be any debate about this thread. Undoubtedly George Best, whoever says otherwise is an illusionist. Refill_Pad (Tyrone) - Posts: 78 - 19/10/2008 20:07:13 122081 Link 0 |
