Replying To Pikeman96: "@Tadhg2020 - I've actually had a look at that Tony Kelly sideline cut that sent the 2022 Munster Final to extra time. The one where you even said yourself "thankfully it was only worth one point". It's on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZDPppu0O6E
Now, if that had been worth two points, would have been very hard on Barry Nash.
Do your job properly by getting to the ball first and turning to try make a clearance, and you end up forced over the sideline and concede something that would have been the losing of the game for your team.
But don't do your job properly. Be slow off the mark such that a Clare man gets to the ball first, and then haul him down out there to concede a free. Worst that can happen is one point to make you draw the game, rather than two points to make you lose it.
It's an extreme examaple, but it's an example all the same of where you'd end up better off to foul than play the game properly." There are pros and cons to everything. I tend to focus on the positive impact, ie the skill that it would promote. It is a thing of beauty when executed well. Thats my opinion anyway. It also has the secondary benefit of players working harder to keep the ball in play due to the potential exposure to a 2 point effort. I acknowledge that sometimes you cant as you point out in your example but I think the benefit to the game as a spectacle outweighs the unintended consequences such as that example. I think we are getting bogged down on one rule that may or may not survive when the real potential damage to the game , as we know and love it, lies elsewhere.

Replying To Tadhg2020: " Replying To Pikeman96: "@Tadhg2020 - two points for a score from a sideline cut was previously trialled during the National Hurling League in 2005.
But you're correct that there's been further talk of it on a number of occasions since then, and consideration of it in this piece from 2019 is still as valid now as it was then: https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport-columnists/arid-30896205.html" Having just read that article I think that the approach to the sideline cut has changed somewhat since then. A number of players were listed there as being proponents of the art but its rare that its attempted in the modern game. Its far more common to see a short one in an attempt to retain possession. Thats the current reality and that leads to rucks. Therefore the reward of 2 points is a carrot to reinvigorate an area or skill in the game that was diminishing just as the 2 point arc in football has revived long distance point scoring in that game." I didnt realise/recall that he scored that many in one game but we was the leading player in the execution of that skill, and by a long way, for the duration of his career.

I'd like to the 40m arc incorporated somehow - maybe for puck outs in lieu of proposed 45m line?
How about a 'football reverse' - two pts for scores 'inside the arc', one from all distances and angles outside, with five pts then for a goal?

Galway County Final today 37 minutes, Loughrea #12 had ball blocked down by the Tommie Larkins wing back and out of touch - fabulous bit of skill Up stepped the #12 and sent the sideline cut over the bar Under the new rules that would have been a 2 pointer and you would be discouraging wings backs to block shots Sideline cuts are a skill - no doubt about that - but a skill worth 2 points?

That is a ridiculous assertion to make. There are many issues with these proposed new rules. I would argue that the 2 point side line is the least concerning of them..That was a great score in what was a real battle. Tommies did a lot right but lost their way a bit in the end.

Didn't see that incident but that's exactly one of my arguments against the idea.
Now imagine it was the 62nd minute and Loughrea had been leading by a point at the time.....

It was a great score in what was a close exciting game. I am simply pointing out how it would have played out under new rules should it have been worth 2 points? If the block hadn't been made and the 12 scored from open play would have been one point only
Same game in injury time Larkins get a sideline puck, a fair distance out and a single point down Flynn gave it a right go I think he was trying to score it direct, but it went short but if he had and it was worth 2 points and ref blew it up immediately what would we be talking about now? I just don't think they have thought that rule through

Putting a sideline cut straight over the bar is undoubtedly a great skill, so on the one hand, you could argue that it should be worth more than (for example) just tapping over a 20-metre free from straight in front of the goal.
But then where does that leave you with all sorts of other points, if you're going to have an extra reward for an extra level of difficulty?
Here's a collection from a few years ago of 13 of the best points scored up to that time: https://www.balls.ie/hurling/hurling-points-best-ever-345693
Any one of them would also be vastly more difficult than tapping over a 20-metre, so should they not be worth more too?
A point is a point, no matter how it comes. Otherwise it's a whole can of worms.
