Div 1-4 Promotion & Relegation

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I'll start my post with the ridiculous situation we find oursleves with league games still being played in the first weekend in Oct and i imagine a few weekends. If you add in play-offs leagues will not be completed until mid-late November. The pros and cons of play-offs can be argued but either way league football should not be being played in late Oct/Nov in my opinion. Hopefully this thread will not argue this point but instead i invite educated opinions on who will get promoted relegated?

I'm not overly familiar with the other Divisions so i'll take Div 4. St Johns have comfortably ran away with Div 4, Aghaderg beat Dromara last Sat. Penulitmate round of matches on Sat and if Aghaderg beat Bright on Sat and Dromara lose to St Johns it will leave Aghaderg promoted if they can defeat Ballykinler in their final match. How will both JFC finalists react this weekend? Will St Johns be happy with their achievement to date and allow their East Down neighbours the victory they need and will Aghaderg avenge their JFC semi final defeat to Bright. Still lots to play for...

In Div 2 we may see a shoot out between our neighbours Annaclone and Clann Na Banna for a coveted Div 1 spot, would be some achievement for the Bann....Although Annaclone will have something to say and this without ruling out Warrenpoint

I'm interested in promotion to div2 which concerns the top 4 of Glassdrumman, who have been great all year, Ardglass, who were a surprise to me and I still haven't seen play,Bredagh who have been close to promotion in recent years and Carryduff who want to go straight back up to div2. These teams have to play each other in the league and again in a round of playoff matches rendering the league games unimportant. Someone else posted on how the reserve leagues are behind schedule too.I have been waiting for these fixtures all season (including some home games for Carryduff against the others in the top 4) and just hope they are fulfilled.

Any body fill me in on the relegation battle of div2?

Are you worried the Johnnies might through the match against Dromara like they did with Aghaderg

In Div 3. Would have to agree with Glassdrumman getting out of 3 and joined by either Bredagh and Carryduff. I think Mitchels will go down but wouldn't be sure who'll join them, can't rule St Michaels out of surviving, they've a strong spine of players and on their day are capable of a good performance.

AllseeingEye, from what I heard Aghaderg travelled to the match but St Johns did not field as they had a number of fellas at a wedding but surely with the non wedding invitees between the 1st and reserves team they could have fielded maybe they didn't want to lose their record....

westdowngeal st.johns had eighteen players not able to play that day. i would be very interested to know if any other div 3 or 4 club could put up a serious threat with that number of absentees. also aghaderg were given no less than eight alternative dates by the fixtures committee, none of them were suitable for aghaderg to field. so i think that talk of st.johns 'throwing' this fixture is total nonsense

I would have to agree it would be difficult to field, as an aside i see that Dundrum in Div 2 didn't field recently, although given the planning required for weddings they would have known well in advance (maybe up to 2 years) it was happening on that date and perhaps could have taken precautions. I just feel sorry for the handful of lads from st johns who weren't invited to the wedding ;-)

I would have to say though that given Aghadergs win over dromara, dromara would be safer of out of Div. 3, I wouldnt rule out aghaderg staying up either, remember they would have played c.6/7 years out of the last 10 or 11 in Div. 3...

Sources in the Johnnies say only 6 or 7 players were at wedding & rest of panel were happy to play match but somewhere along the line the decision was made not to play ??????

Aghaderg comfortably beat Bright 0-05 0-19. If they win their final game at home to Ballykinler they will be promoted behind St Johns. Any other play-off matters decided this weekend?

What way does the relegation work Dj27, do you still need a certain % of the top teams points total to force playoffs, if so what % figure etc

what's the story with relegation from Div 3 this year? Is there playoffs? With 3 teams being demoted is it a playoff between the bottom 4 or bottom 5? As Westdowngael asks is there a % of the leaders points required to achieve a playoff spot? if so does this mean Mitchells are automatically relegated?

Still unclear how the relegation situation in div 1 and 2 is working - is it a case that the two bottom teams go down no matter the points total or is there play offs with the % total having to be reached - please someone enlighten me

In Div 1 & 2 if the bottom 2 teams do not get the required % of the top team then they are automatically relegated and no play offs will take place. If however the bottom 2 teams get the % required they will qualify for the play offs with the 2 teams above them. In the case of Div 2, Dundrum have been relegated because they have no chance of attaining the required points. Kilclief have still an outside chance of forcing play offs if they manange to get to 11/12 points from their last 3 games. Tullylish have exceeded the required points % but will have to wait to see if Kilclief force a playoff and if so could involve Downpatrick as well. I hope that this hepls to clear the %/play off issue.

good work that clears Div 2 up. What about Div 3 with there being an extra team in it this year? or is it exactly the same principle as you've explained Div 2 with potentially 4 teams in relegation play offs (although Mitchels like Dundrum will be automatically relegated) or is it bottom 5?
