Replying To Viking66:  "It would definitely be fairer to have some AIHQFs in Nowlan Park"
Nowlan Park is one of my favourite places to go.

But thing about it is that capacity is "only" about 27,000 so if it were to be used for All-Ireland quarter-finals, they'd have to be split instead of being a double-header.

And let's say it'd be Wexford v Waterford or Tipperary. You could suddenly have 15,000 Wexford people wanting to go because it's that bit closer and easier than Thurles. You could have another 15,000 or more likely to attend from the other county.

Now you'd be looking at a situation of there not being enough tickets to satisfy demand, so the powers-that-be would think "maybe better put it on in a bigger venue instead". And then you'd be back to having it in Thurles, where so many Wexford people wouldn't go at all.

A real example of how it's hard to do the "right" thing!!!

Absolutely I get that Pikeman. Personally I don't mind Semple Stadium or the trip up to it, aside from having really cheap, well not cheap, just *****, coffee there that you wouldn't get in Aldi. But a full Nowlan Park for a game against a Clare or Waterford or Tipperary would be far better for atmosphere, and far better for our chances of actually winning a QF. Even Croke Park is better for us in the QF era.

Speed limit to be reduced in only Wexford village on a national road - 'It is terrifying to see the volume of traffic passing through there' | Irish Independent https://share.google/ShEuTIRHLAKc7QtNp

Oylegate overlooked again Wex98. Not sure Barntown and Tagoat be too happy either. Larkins Cross is definitely the most dangerous junction in Wexford. Not anything to do with hurling I know!

I'd have sworn that the speed limit in Clonroche is less than 80 km/h. I certainly don't bomb through it at 80 myself.

And sure enough, a look at Google Streetview shows that if you're coming from the Enniscorthy side, there are 60 km/h signs just before the gates of the Tirlan Mills, and 50 km/h signs just past the mills. Similar if you're coming from the Ross side - you hit 60 km/h signs first, followed by 50 km/h signs a little further on.

Granted, that Streetview is from September 2019. Wonder have the signs been taken down and the limit somehow gone up to 80 in the meantime?

Either way, and as you point out, am sure Oylegate, Barntown & Tagoat will be wondering about how Clonroche is the "only" village on a national route. And the fact that lower limits apply in those three places shows that the Councillor in the story here is wrong when she worries that TII are unlikely to agree to a lower limit on a national route.

All a bit strange. But again - nothing to do with hurling. Unless you consider that a lower limit might mean it takes a minute longer to get to training at the Cloughbawn pitch!

Yes every county has a bandwagon support. We are no different and I've always kind of cringed at the best supporters in the world shtick.

I will say one thing though I'd never criticise anyone for not going to Thurles for games. It's a nightmare to get there from wexford and its a fact that's constantly overlooked in hurlings obsession with all things Munster. Public transport non existent really and then the road itself an absolute nightmare and when ye get there nothing in the place.

Many of the games fixed for ourselves could be played in Nowlan Park or Portlaoise without affecting overtly the teams we were playing but as per usual the obsession with Thurles continues.

I say split the quarter finals. Two games in Thurles is unnecessary and unfair to Leinster teams.
That would most certainly solve the crowd issue.
It would mean of course that one year playing in a Munster venue and the following year would be given to Leinster.
Ridiculous that the two games are double headers in Thurles.

If only we had a national gaa stadium in the capital for us all to share for such occasions........

If only :D

And it would certainly suit our bandwagon!

But then you'd probably have all the Munster counties complaining about the "sacrilege" of taking a big hurling occasion out of Thurles, "the home of hurling". I really don't get their fascination with the place, and I really don't like it myself.

Nobody likes Thurles but as my father in law says Wexford people got there in 1993 for 3 league finals in much worse cars and never flinched at the idea.
Sometimes if you want to see Wexford get to an All-Ireland semi final, you have to support them in getting there. There are parts of Clare which are just as far from Thurles as parts of Wexford. Ennis is probably 2 hrs on match day yet they get there?
I believe, rightly or wrongly, that Wexford people just want the "ah the match is in Thurles" excuse to whinge and wait for the semi final and then like flies to fresh cow dung descend on Croke Park.
Clare support got their team over the line v Wexford a few years ago. No doubt about that to me and I would hazard a guess anybody there would think it too. The Wexford support was TINY that day. And then you wonder why players won't give the commitment? Why would they to turn up at AIQF stage and play in front of a tiny support?
The match can't always be in your own back yard. But then again even Wexford Park is half full at best. But as I said before, a lot of the problems in Leinster are down to bad marketing. You wouldn't even know the matches are on half the time.

Quick look on google maps wil tell you as things stand. Sure itsmore on match day for everyone even though other counties have it that bit easier coming in on the right side of Thurles.

Ennis 1hr and 25 mins with three quarters of travel on Motorway roads.

Wexford town over 2 hours driving at least half on L and R roads.

Cork city 1hr 20 mins all of it motorway really

Dublin city all of it motorway closer to 2 hrs

Galway are somewhat comparable to ourselves and yet again never a huge following from Galway in thurles

Waterford 1hr 30 mins, half of it on motorway

And just to further emphasise the point that's driving, check out the "public transport" options for each county for the craic!

1993 league final seems to have a mythology around it that half of wexford were there, there was 20k or so each game.

Like I said I'd never criticise any wexford fan for not wanting to go to thurles, it isn't an excuse, its a frustration at hurlings obsession with all things munster.

People from ennis would actually be in portlaoise quicker than people from wexford town yet it just happens to be in the wrong province.

You want to market games better, make it easier for everyone to go, not just munster counties.

I got off a flight home from Portugal, into the car and straight to Thurles for that and you're right. There were very few of us there that day and the Clare crowd made all the difference.

You keep citing the official attendance at that Kilkenny game in 23 in the Park which is not accurate. When throw in was delayed they opened the gates. Nobody has any idea how many people were in the park that day. Granted Westmeath on the same year was a pathetic showing from Wexford supporters.

I agree with you about how Leinster is marketed though. The national media has a lot to answer for there. As long as I can remember they've been running Leinster down and it's a myth.

Wexford, Offaly, Kilkenny before, now Wexford, Dublin, Kilkenny, Galway and hopefully Offaly soon have served up some amazing contests every bit as good as Munster.

I don't know if you caught Liam og on newstalk last week but he said in 2014 Wexford watched the Clare final of 13 with no sound on and it was a totally different experience without they hype. They decided their own level was pretty close and of course dethroned them in the replay in the Park.

2022 was a strange one. Waterford cruised to the League then fell apart in the Championship, while we came the closest we have had in years to winning an AIQF. 2017 we were only coming, while Tipp were the reigning AI champions.
We did beat Waterford there in 2014 in the Championship, think that was our last Championship game against a Munster side there?

Olygate village its 50kpm but outside it 100kpm.

I would say the the relationship to the GAA is the countless number of people who loose their lives impacts all communities including the GAA. Perhaps the GAA should use its own presence in the younger community to promote safer driving, it did away with sponsorship from tobacco and alcohol, perhaps this is one they should also look at how they can be a positive influence.

Yup, that's what I thought. Haven't passed that way since this topic came up a few days ago but might be doing so this evening, so will keep an eye out for speed limit signs.

And if they're there, will be even more mystified about why councillors are calling for a reduction in an 80 km/h limit if there are already 50 km/h signs in place!

I didn't think I quoted the official attendance at all (I don't know what it was to be blunt) but the fact remains that for one of the biggest game Wexford ever played in the park was not full. When the team needed support worse than ever in their lives, half of Wexford who would rock up to Croke Park for an All-Ireland Semi Final didn't care enough to bother going.
Why would a 21-22 year old put his college years or life on hold when people only support the team when it suits them?
