The shock that day was more about just how abject Kerry were on the day. Completely hammered. The win/lose element of a game involving the previous 2 All-Ireland Champions can never be classed as a shock imo. Similar to Dublin and Donegal in 2014. The result shouldn't really have been the shock some made it out to be. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13796 - 02/05/2025 10:44:11 2606221 Link 0 |

With respect, calling Meath traditional heavyweights is like me calling Cavan modern heavyweights. The GAA existed for 70 years before Meath got into gear really. Since then 100% Meath are heavyweights and agree the win at the weekend should not be in this conversation

When you beat AI champions Armagh in 2003 it was a big shock, although I remember ye were quietly confident at the time

100% correct Mesamis. The shock of Meaths victory was the margin. They hammered us by 15 pointswhich at the time was a bad beating. Meath were All Ireland champions 2 years previously. Likewise Donegal were All Ireland 2 years previously when they beat Dublin in 2014.The only shock there was Dublin were in total control before Donegal scored goals. Well the title is the greatest upsets in Football so I'm sticking to the big ball. If you are going down the hurling route Antrim beating Offaly in the 1989 All Ireland semi-final has to be up there as one of the great hurling shocks.

We didn't win a hurling AI between 1910 and 1955, 45 years also. Clare didn't win one between 1914 and 1995, which is I think the record. Galway are next between 1923 and 1980.

Yet here you are commenting. Interesting for someone who's "not bothered" Then again it's nothing new for you when someone thinks different to you.

The point about it was Waterford were the better team that day despite all the Kerry team nonsense. Look at who did play. Mick O' Connell, Mick O Dwyer, Lyme and many big stars who went on to pocket many All-Ireland medals. Many of the Waterford team did not play again as they went on to prepare for the hurling that we lost to Kilkenny by a point after out playing them. I was in primary school at the time and the euphoria after beating Kerry was unbelievable. My dad said they just tore into them. Scored two goals. Kerry could not get any. If we include u-21s in the conversations what about Waterford winning Munster beating Kerry with Gooch, Declan O'Sullivan et al in the final

If you're not bothered why are you still replying to my comments? No need to get upset.

By logic do you think most of the counties in Ulster aren't traditional heavyweights? Seeing as it wasn't until the 50s most of them to use your own words "got into gear"
