I remember years ago John Kelly used to host a late night artsy programme on RTÉ 1. There'd be a section where the panel reviewed latest video releases. Smokeless Red (Carlow) - Posts: 30 - 03/04/2025 18:02:21 2600412 Link 2 |
His greatest legacy is what he did after he finished with Kerry. RIP oneoff (UK) - Posts: 1552 - 03/04/2025 18:15:04 2600415 Link 2 |
His most famous statement was after a competitive Munster final around 1975 or 1976, he walked into Cork dressing room to console the losers, and announced that Cork are the second best team in the country. Not sure how it was received!

R.I.P. Micko. A real legend. A man who managed 8 All Ireland triumphs and in his own words he says he was just lucky he had a great bunch of players. CiarraiMick (Dublin) - Posts: 3854 - 03/04/2025 23:27:57 2600452 Link 2 |

Raised the standards of teams wherever he went, a bit like Mickey Harte or John O'Mahony, amongst a select group of others. But he is up on the top pedestal as the greatest manager in Gaelic football ever, there's simply no questioning that. boxtyburgerbuns (Leitrim) - Posts: 207 - 04/04/2025 11:47:18 2600509 Link 0 |

A huge part of his story? Doubt many would agree with you, his successes in Kerry especially as a fantastic player and then incredible manager and then at provincial level in Laois and Kildare are what people remember him for. Still doesn't excuse the fact that he managed Wicklow and they should have been represented.

I agree with you. Considering where we were when he took over and the dramatic improvement within a short period of time was right up there with any of his other magnificent achievements. I accept we didn't win a Leinster title like Kildare and Laois but what people don't realise is that the GAA authorities in HQ banned team from Division 4 from the qualifiers in '07 and '08 despite the fact we beat Kildare in '08 and narrowly lost to Laois who were provincial champions a few years earlier. When we were allowed back into the qualifier in '09 we beat Fermanagh, Cavan and Down, the same Down team that lost the 2010 All Ireland final by 1 point. Great days and it was all due to the great man. Sadly we'll never see his like again. May He Rest In Peace.

I liked what he said about managing Wicklow when he took them over. The RTE reporter asked him what it was like taking over a weaker county , maybe they got him on a bad day but it nearly made me want to play for him. So inspiring.. leitrim4sam (Leitrim) - Posts: 693 - 05/04/2025 23:25:55 2600710 Link 0 |
