League Final Venues

(Oldest Posts First)

listen i know the prize it is for teams to play in croke park etc but would it not be better to have the top team have home venue v the team that finished 2th, imagine the great evening had in wexford park for the limerick game , and its a prize for topping the group, same in every div the top team is at home for final, would get mighty crowds for 2th and 3rd finals

I honestly don't think so. I know yesterday turned out disappointing for our lads, but still, it was a big thing for them to play in Croke Park. Much bigger than just another day in Wexford Park would have been. Matches in Croke Park don't come around too often for teams like Wexford, and even less often for lower division teams from other provinces.

I actually thought this thread might have been about the venues for the hurling league finals. No disrespect whatsoever to the Truagh club in Monaghan, but hardly a fitting place for a final, and I think Fermanagh & Louth are right to be unhappy about it.

Having said that, they're a little misplaced with comments like 'we deserve a day out in Croke Park like everybody else', when you consider not even the Division 1 Finals are fixed for Croke Park.

The division 1 final is fixed at the proper venue but the venues for the Division 2/3/4 finals were disgraceful..,.. Shame on the GAA

What about a division 2 final being played on a pitch with no 65 metre line marked on it..did croke park not check this before hand or is the job of the hosting venue??could the teams have decided they wouldn't have played?this might look like a small thing but it really tells me not much thought of some hurling counties..I've been at a few club games in limerick in last 2 weeks and all pitches have been lined properly for hurling and the new rules in football.

The 1b Final venue choice is wrong also.

I 100% agree that the choice of venues was shameful. Was just pointing out that Fermanagh & Louth managers were off the mark with claims they deserved a day in Croke Park "like everybody else", when none of the hurling finals are actually being played there.

Particularly bad was the pitch in Inniskeen, with no 65m line being marked. It shows just how little some places and some counties think of hurling, that they don't even mark a pitch to allow a hurling game be played properly.

It's the job of the hosting venue to make sure that all's in order for a match being played there. Croke Park would have been paying them a ground rent for use of the venue, and they're supposed to make sure all is in order to earn that rent.

The blame therefore lies almost wholly with the people in charge of the venue itself. You could argue that Croke Park should have checked, but in my experience - like yours - it's unprecedented that a pitch wouldn't be marked with both 45 and 65m lines. I've been at the pitches of our "football only" clubs in Wexford countless times over the years, and they've all always had 65m lines marked anyway.

Similarly, I've always seen 45m lines on the pitches of our "hurling only" clubs. Granted, haven't been at any of those yet this year and so I don't know if they intend to mark the new arc for football, but would expect that if even one football match is to be played there, they'd have the pitch marked properly all right.

I would be in favor of home draw league finals. Would be a big incentive for finishing top of the league and not too much bother for those playing the week after in championship.

It works well for Dublin.

Would have been a mess in McHale park yesterday though with Connacht playing the day before.
