What Players Have Played Hurling For One County And Football For Another?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I was asked this question today. A good quiz question. Eoghan Collins, one of the coaches for Colmans School from Claremorris, in colleges football final last Monday, played football for Clare and hurling for Mayo. Surely there are more?

That's very impressive to play in both codes for both counties, I have never heard of anyone doing that before. Also, I see from his Wiki page that he also played Railway cup hurling for Connacht so he must have been seriously talented in both codes.

Lol.

He famously played hurling in Kildare all right. But not for Kildare.

Liam Currams won senior All Ireland football and hurling medals with Offaly. He also played in senior football and hurling finals in the same year.
Unlikely to see this ever again.

The story with Johnston is that he got an inter-county transfer from Cavan to Kildare all right. But the rules of the time were that before he could line out with the Kildare county footballers, he had to play in a club match there.

And as chance would have it, there were only club hurling matches coming up before the Kildare county team were due in action again.

So despite never having held a hurl in his life, he got a loan of one (and a helmet!) somewhere, togged off for a club hurling match, and came on for the last two minutes.

He probably never used hurl or helmet again after that either!

He played the first 30seconds of a club hurling championship match for his adopted football clubs sister hurling club. Made a mockery out of our hurling championship.

It's happened a bit in recent years if you count New York as a county. Johnny Glynn Galway and Danny Sutcliffe Dublin two that come to mind. Playing for two different counties in the same sport is not that uncommon down through the years, you could rattle quite a few. Nearly sure Mattie McDonagh who won 4 senior all irelands with Galway actually played for two different counties in two different sports in the one year, football for Galway and hurling for Roscommon, albeit at minor. Fionan Mackessey has a minor all Ireland football medal with Kerry and obviously plays hurling for Kilkenny now (I'd imagine he's the first ever man to hurl for Kilkenny with a minor football all Ireland amongst it all too) sure there's more I can't remember as well as the lads named by others.

Some crazy achievements in the early years have been unfortunately forgotten to time. That's an amazing one.
