Heavy Defeats In Football

(Oldest Posts First)

Anyone know what has been the biggest margin of victory for a county football team in a championship match? I would guess there have been very big wins for Kerry v Waterford over the years.

My guess would be Kerry v Clare in 1977.
As far as I recall Kerry put up 9-20 or thereabouts.
And you never saw 20+ points in those days, never mind 9 goals.

Minor football 2016 Wexford 17-20 Kilkenny 0-0, surely can't be beaten?

That was in 1979, realdub, when that great Kerry team was probably at its peak - they beat Clare by 9-21 to 1-9. The next biggest win that I can think of is: Galway 6-18 Sligo 0-4 in the 1990 Connacht championship.

Apologies MartinJoe. This won't be near the worst defeat but I remembered the 1993 scutching Cork gave us, 5-15 to 0-10. Rumour had it after the match that Jack O'Shea broke up a cigarette machine because he couldn't find 20 Players!

If I recall correctly it was 9-27 to 1-9 for Kerry that day… Funny enough no team scored more on Kerry for the rest of the championship than Clare did that day…

Don't think Kilkenny have entered a minor team in the championship since that have they?

They entered it again in 2019, with DJ Carey as manager.

Only lost to Louth by eight points in the first of two group matches, but suffered a scutching at the hands of WIcklow in the second, where they were beaten by 9-20 to 2-3.

By the way, can confirm that Kerry win back in 1979 is the biggest margin ever in senior championship football.
