So with the new year not long away and uiet enough here, suppose it's time to open a new thread for the Senior team?

Fixtures are out for the League. Personally I will miss the McKenna Cup as was nice to blow off the post Christmas cobwebs with seeing new talent, but but sure end of January for League to aim for. And with 4 home games and not a huge amount of travel for the 3 away games, it is a decent layout ahead for us. Staying up is a minimum, and well up the table too to continue to develop in Sam.

The better news is the return of McKiernan which the Celt just announced. Sean McEvoy back to GAA is an exciting talent to have. And with a lot of other new faces (that will take time to bed in) and not many lost we do look stronger than last year. Conor Brady is a loss though, but the poor fella always picked up injuries. Looking forward to the year ahead. What do you reckon for us?

Not sure if return of McKieran is good news. He was finished as an inter county player 2 years ago. Hes not going to be a starter. Only thing he is doing is blocking a space for a young player with potential.

I agree…. He made little impact fog the last couple of years he played county so I can't see how he will be any better now… Is he trying to be Cavans version of Michael Murphy I wonder… Are the new rules having an influence here too… When he was younger and playing at full forward they would never kick the ball into him and now they bring him back to possibly play the same position ( well like Murphy he's hardly expected to play any other position )…. We wish him well but it's a poor reflection on our young talent available when himself and Nevin O Donnell returning to the senior panel are seen as major positives for the new season….

What young player with potential do you think he would be blocking?

You would wonder if the new rules will actually change much in terms of style of play. I think the kick out one will actually have the biggest influence on the game. The mark will be almost impossible to execute. I can see lots of slow possession based build ups through the hands. And with 8-10 steps now permitted and 11v11 it will be very hard for a team to force a turnover.

As for Gearoid, I suppose there will be no tracking back for the 3 forwards up front, so this could suit him. Paul Conroy has just won player of the year at 35 so I don't see a problem with age. Let's hope we see more of this - https://youtu.be/BF6fFk5arvA?si=KO_tuceJzL-6-KNf

Have Cavan played any challenge matches lately, any reports, were they in Kerry over the weekend?

What was the point in getting rid of the pre season competitions if County teams are running all over the country playing challenge games…? Yet another huge own goal by the GAA…

Donal O'Sullivan returns to catch the eye as experimental Kerry beat Cavan
Kerry beat Cavan 1-16 to 0-6 but the challenge game was close at half-time.

No reason for counties to be running all over the country and then complaining about burn out and expenses. Why not relax at home. If the magenta cup was on, counties would be still running the country end of November. Players are bigger fools, they'll be the ones complaining but still doing it.

So we scored the massive total of 6pts under the new rules…. that doesn't augur well.. Also what on earth is the point of Cavan going all the way down to Kerry to play a county that's miles out of their league…? How on earth could that be of any benefit..? Just a complete waste of CB finances is all it is…

Seems mad alright for them to head down to Kerry for a challenge game against a rookie Kerry team in the frost. Maybe it was aimed at being a bonding weekend. Wasn't it Saturday evening that the first snow fell in the south so i wonder if they got stuck on the way back

Are there any more challenge matches scheduled that we will be let into see?

In the review of the Cavan - Kerry game in Irish Examiner. No mention of any Cavan player by name.
Very curious about the Cavan team or squad for the coming season. Are there be many new players?
The new rules are going to be very difficult for Referee's to administer. Heard that David Gough found it hard in the Galway-Kildare game as their are so many new rules. Trying to count backs behind 21 Yard line from 80 yards away is crazy. Sounds like its going to be very stop-start.

Does anyone know if Thomas Galligan has returned?

the 3 players back only have to be in their own half, not behind their 21 yard line

The rule states you must keep 3 players in the attacking half but you can have 11 defenders not including the goalkeeper keeping an eye on them… It will still be a defensive game… the 3 players up can hover along the half way line if they want

No word from the legendary tomsmith on the new rules yet.
Being the progressive liberal type he is I'm sure he'll welcome them warmly.

At least new chairman has already come up with new ideas to save money and reinvest it in the upgrading of Breffni park so that it can cater for the average crowd that attends matches in there ie less than 2000. I hear they are restricting the amount of free match programs issued to voluntary workers like the civil defence. Fair play to him this should save thousands of euros.
