Attended the McRory play off game yesterday between St Pats Cavan v South West Donegal and was disappointed with the overall performance. The amount of times we got turned over throughout the game was astonishing . Our Midfield got overrun from the start and neither looked like natural midfielders. Donegal broke at pace and our lads couldn't track them. We needed to start the 2nd half well but it was Donegal who banged over 3 points to put them 9 points up and the Cavan defence was at sea.St Pats made a few changes and it seemed to help as we got it back to 3 and it begged the question should they have been started but In the end Donegal prevailed as they were still full of running and ran out deserving winners. Overall the style of football Donegal played was brilliant on the eye whereas we were slow and ponderous and running in to cul de sacs. The way the game has gone it looks like we need to play 15 attacking fast paced players and that includes the goalkeeper . The day of the Big strong defender is gone. Its all about legs. Pick lads who aren't afraid to work and get up and down the field..This has to start at the u 14 development teams . In Cavan here we just seem to put the Bigger lads on these panels which is a big mistake . You need to develop the smaller technical players as they do in Tyrone Derry and Donegal .Hopefully our development manager and helpers seen this in our own back yard yesterday

They've done exactly that with the U-14 development squad. Majority big players. This direction is coming from the top. Some things never change.

And people wonder why nobody bothers going to see county football at any level….? Coaches as I've said a thousand times have the game destroyed and no amount of rule changes are going to remedy that…!

Development squads in Cavan should be scrapped. There a waste of time and money. Parents out a fortune running in and out to Breffni Park with their kids. These sessions are just routine training . Nothing to do with helping them develop their skill levels..Its just a Tick the box exercise for the county board. We're a world away from the coaching that's happening up north. It's all well and good getting Breffni park developed but the young players developement should be a priority. We're playing catchup. Hopefully this Chairman will be more football than financial.

The GAA has turned into all financial…. Just look at what's most important to those in Croke Park… Remember a fish rots from the head….!!!!

My impression was always the opposite - that Cavan supporters go crazy for small fast players, especially corner forwards who take on their man. Whereas big tall players are usually regarded as "lazy".

Although I'd agree that height shouldn't be important at underage level, everyone develops at different stages

Anyway I personally don't see the hype around schools football. School is for education imo, club football should be the priority.

Interestingly from that successful pats team that won McRory amongst other titles, only two of them went on to have a significant career at intercounty level - Thomas Galligan and Luke Fortune. A poor return for a team that was lauded at the time

Development squads are even worse than a waste of money Any natural gifted footballer who fans would like to watch will have these skills coached out of them and will be turned into sterile robots playing the modern puke football. Our clubs best footballer was in there for two years and got less than 10 minutes game time and it took him almost 2 years to get this brain dead puke football out of his system he is now back to his best.

Scrapping development squads is a sure fire way to return to the 1950's... but then that was the heyday of Cavan football so I can see why it appeals to those in the Blue and White of Cavan.

Development squads are essential for talent ID, developing the skills of young players especially from small rural clubs and for creating a high performance environment to train young players for stepping up to the senior intercounty team. 99% of those in the squad won't make it but it teaches them good habits if development squads are run correctly.

the key phrase in your post is "if development squads are run correctly", that has been a problem with Cavan development squads

Development squads are a total waste of time and resources…. All it does is breed a form of elitism amongst young players who think they already county players long before they prove themselves… A lot of players when discarded from these squads just give up playing altogether… The FA in England tried this nonsense about 40 years ago to try and develop elite players that would go on and represent their country…. It was shut down after 10/15 years at a massive cost outlay and absolutely no results.. A huge lesson learned….!

What about the famed St. George's park that has given us the new generation of England stars including the likes of Saka at Arsenal? It has been much lauded in bringing England to the brink of major success again

They're good enough to beat Monaghan more often than not. When can we expect Monaghan's heyday?

It's fairly obvious that development squads don't work ( especially in Cavan ) when you look at our dismal underage record in the past 10 years… A complete waste of time and money… !

What would your proposal be? From Monaghans perspective it's helped us compete at a decent level. It's different from each county of course but what's the alternative for Cavan?

Probably best to look at successful counties like Armagh, Tyrone and Donegal. Counties that have won national competitions and don't have fans that camp in other counties forums giving it the big I am with nothing to back it up

The facts are that Cavans record in recent years at under age level has been nothing short of abysmal and the facts back that up no matter where you want to camp…! If in your opinion these centres of excellence are so good why are our results so bad since going down that route…? Back that up .. good lad…!

the fact is that for the most part Cavan's record at underage level has been abysmal in recent years despite development squads, but it was also abysmal for the previous decades. There is something deeply wrong with our coaching and development of underage teams. So many of the best talents don't want to play for the minors every year. Many who do get an inflated opinion of their status and ability, and far too often Cavan rush the best minor talent into the senior ranks, and by the time they are 22 or 23 they are but a distant memory, when in fact they should only be emerging on to the senior county team at that age.

Where have I said they were good? I'm just responding to the Monaghan lads coming on here thinking it's an opportunity to gloat.... about nothing. Try to respond to what I've said not what you want me to have said... good lad....!
