Agreed. I think changing the clandestine had a huge impact to be honest. I'd know a good few casual supporters that don't realise the championship has started. We love the day out in croke Park but the support for Antrim, Carlow Westmeath games etc. Is an embarrassment at times. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3515 - 22/04/2025 13:19:45 2603624 Link 0 |
100% . We've seen a serious drop in the number of parents that hang on to watch their youngsters nevermind encourage them to hurling during the week. I remember Richie kehoe being in the CBS and I genuinely never saw him without his hurl in his hand even between classes. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3515 - 22/04/2025 13:21:50 2603625 Link 0 |
Remember a lad I used to hurl with years ago who worked for the county board for a while told me Wexford had one of the worst uptakes of any county of Intercounty season tickets. I've stopped getting them myself these days too because the value isn't really there and the realities of my life have changed so I can't attend every game to make it worthwhile. Was a few years ago and maybe it's changed now but I doubt it.

To be good at Hurling in particular you need to be pucking regularly. You'll never master anything just putting in 2 or 3 hours a week. That's great to hear about the u9's. I've never seen as many kids about the county carrying hurleys, it's fantastic to see. I'd know some Naas club members and there has been huge effort put in, it goes way back. No surprise at all now that they dominate kildare senior hurling and won an All Ireland. They got the right educated people in and the club seems to be run extremely well. Moving to the location they are at now was a huge plus too. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 2254 - 22/04/2025 13:35:23 2603632 Link 0 |
Think one of the big selling points of the inter-county season ticket is that it guarantees you a ticket for the All-Ireland Final if your county makes it there. This makes it very attractive to people in many other counties, but realistically and unfortunately, it's not particularly relevant to Wexford.

Ideal opportunity so for the county board to encourage lots of young people to go when they need the crowd would be small. Free/discounted tickets. Invite a load of Antrim underage clubs down for the weekend (every county in Leinster should be forced to do that if we ever want to seriously expand the game in likes of Antrim), schedule blitzes etc. Drum up some local interest - free/discounted buses/trains in partnership with local businesses and leave the car at home. We don't half try to find excuses. That's Ireland all over, any chance of success and the bandwagon kicks off - FOMO as the kids put it - Garth Brooks even! When a team is struggling, the Ireland soccer team, GAA county teams, LOI teams - the crowd dwindles. There isn't really a tradition in Ireland of following a team regularly like there is in Europe or the UK. Timbertony (Wexford) - Posts: 378 - 22/04/2025 14:11:45 2603645 Link 0 |
I think Logistics don't help the Leinster championship in a lot of ways, bar Wexford v Kilkenny none of the games are that close geographically. Like Galway v Kilkenny is nearly a 6 hour round trip, Galway v Wexford is over 6 hours of a round trip. Antrim is massive trip for everyone bar Dublin. Offaly v Galway might actually get a good crowd from both due to closeness of both to each other. They'd a massive crowd for their u20 game. Whereas in Munster there isn't really the same journeys. Waterford v Clare probably the worst trip and probably signs on it wouldn't attract the same crowd. I know the same quality isn't there in Leinster but the crowd plays an absolutely massive part in it. It just never gets the same atmosphere bar Kilkenny v Wexford and a few of the Galway v Kilkenny Leinster finals and even they're lost in the sheer size of croke park, I remember the crowd at the 2017 Leinster final, think it still the biggest attendance at a provincial final of recent decades and even then there was still 20,000 empty seats. Even just watching the games on TV, it doesn't feel the same as the Munster games cus of all the visible empty seats. That has an impact all the whole feel of the game and doesn't create close to the same cauldron. Doesn't help by some very lazy analysis of the championship over the last few years. I think every Galway v Kilkenny round robin game whether it be good or bad just gets swept as some kind of dress rehearsal for a Leinster final analysis, the lack of coverage the Kilkenny v Wexford games have gotten the last few years too and they're the best atmosphere games the Leinster championship has to offer the last few years too. I do think the round robin has made the Leinster championship worse and they're Munster championship better. Even the way it's the same order of matches every single year doesn't help, mix it up a bit. Galway v Dublin and Kilkenny v Wexford have had some great last day drama and all that but they're on at the same time and the two games are two of the better games most years, they can kinda get lost in each other. Why not a Galway v Kilkenny last round match or Dublin v Offaly last round match, Wexford v Dublin last round match. Spread them around a lot more. On a whole the championship has become stagnant, it's like we had 2019 last day drama and just decided let's keep this no matter what.

I fully agree. Mcguckin is whole hearted and really gives it everything but he is not a forward, full stop. We badly need lads that can score. Kevin and Cian rattled the net last Saturday but will they get those chances against better opposition. I think Jack Redmond is needed to replace Jacko. We simply can't hope that Chin will do the business every day. I will bet my house on Dublin will have 2 marking him so it's unlikely he will be as effective as against the safrons. And then organising Wexford v Clare q-finals in Thurles the same team as Feile in Wexford on a Saturday and wondering why Wexford people can't travel. God forbid they would make Clare play Wexford in Nowlan Park on the Sunday. The high almighty Tailteann cup semi-finals must take the TV slots on the Sunday though least we forget. The TV schedule drive me nuts. Our final day game with Kilkenny is always the highlight of the Leinster championship and nobody saw that in 2023 unless you were there which was absolutely crazy. It's been far better than the Leinster final the last couple of years too Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3515 - 22/04/2025 14:38:50 2603657 Link 0 |
That Clare game should have been in Kilkenny at 7pm the Saturday if not the Sunday

Any news on Shane Recks injury is he definitely out this weekend? I hope Jack Redmond is available to start it looks like he twisted his ankle on Saturday the first ball he went to. I could be wrong but I think Liam Ryan will start on Saturday. Rossiter will know this is a massive game and he may have been saving him on Saturday gone when the game was won. Jacko is a big loss I presume he is gone for just the one game? We really need him and Rory to keep their cool for the rest of the year we cant afford to go down to 14 again.

Blitzes for Atrim clubs. If ye want to see the consideration the likes of Antrim are given remember that whilst their seniors warmed up in Wexfkrd for a 2pm throw in their minors were in Westmeath playing at 1 pm. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1478 - 22/04/2025 15:03:37 2603661 Link 1 |
I could be wrong but I think I heard someone on one of the podcasts say the fixtures will be changing next year. I agree with you we need a different order of fixtures to change things up

Went on to ticketmaster to try get two tickets for the match Saturday - only options were the two terraces behind the goals, both stands hardly sold out? OpenStandWall (Wexford) - Posts: 241 - 22/04/2025 16:52:47 2603691 Link 0 |

Thing is, the ticketing etc. for championship matches falls to the Leinster Council, not to Wexford County Board. Wexford can't give free or discounted tickets to hundreds of children, unless the County Board itself actually paid for those tickets or made up the shortfall. And you could invite down every single underage club from Antrim, but who's going to pay for their travel, and probably a place for them to stay? These sort of ideas are great until you get into the practicalities of them. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2822 - 22/04/2025 17:01:48 2603696 Link 0 |
Only one stand. If you get any terrace you can go far side or either end if you get in reasonable time... Will be full house..
