Nah the railway cup was discontinued a few years back over player welfare.

Although football is happening this year to test rules.

The hurling is kind of a mismatch anyway. Unfortunately the levels in the north and the west are nowhere near Leinster or Munster which is a shame.

Used to be a great chance for the odd hurler from a weaker county to get some recognition

Absolutely, Derry, down, Carlow, laois etc. Would always produce a few hurlers and that was a big stage for them.

I said it before it was important for Wexford lads when things weren't going well that they'd get in the starting 15 full of hotys from Kilkenny.

This plus the original All-Star selection system helped promote the sport in areas of less prominence. An All-Star used to be a player who displayed excellence in a given position over the whole year in all competitions. Now it is selected from performances in finals only and trophy winners. Talking from both sides of the mouth about promotion of our games in weaker counties.
Recently Pierce Whyte for his club Killrosanty gave a display of fielding, kicking and scoring but while doing the same at inter county never even got a nomination. The same is true for great hurlers from the lesser counties. The best fullback is the best fullback and not the one who plays corner back but given the position on the All-Star team to fit him in. It is a charade anymore.

The railway cup final use to be bigger than the All Ireland in terms of popularity as it was almost impossible to see the star players of the day before television............it might make a comeback considering the sport on TV now!!
