Scores From Sideline Cuts In A Single Game

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I just heard a player scored 4 points from sideline cuts in the Meath Senior Hurling Championship Semi Final in Navan today.

James Murray from Trim scored 4 points from sideline cuts, from the right, from the left and even one from near the half way line.

I have never known of one player to score that many in a single game before.

Is it a record.???

Joe Canning scored 4 sidelines in an All-Ireland semi-final, so it has been done before and at the highest level. It's some achievement, regardless of the level.

Nice comparison for the Meath man to have, albeit in different circumstances.

Joe was a genius of a player.

Has Fintan Burke done it as well (got 4 in a game?). I know he has got some monsters. (Or did Joe get 3 , went off injured, and Fintan got the 4th one that day?)

Yesterday Eanna Burke scored one for Thomas's not far off midfield.

It's a very good skill but people under the age of 45--50 often see this as proof positive that modern players are SO much more skillful today than they were 40 or 50 years ago without being aware that the sliotar was a lot heavier in bygone days especially on a wet day because it soaked up the water. Modern players, if they were playing back then with the old style sliotar --even with the benefit of modern S &C and more aerodynamic hurleys-- wouldnt be scoring sidelines with the regularity that they do now.

Anyone else remember back in the day, if you were playing with a sliotar that was soaked from being out in the rain all day , and you tried to hit it with all your strength as hard as you could, your hurley would vibrate and send a "shock" up through the wood into your hands and forearms? You would always be careful to hit it with considerably less strength the next time!!!

Just saw the clip of the one from near the half way line, incredible stuff.

Definitely a great skill even recognizing the changes that have come. What surprises me in these times of stats that short ones are allowed by coaches and trainers. The rate of turn over must be 90% and in fact not just that but an actual score for the opposition. At least drive it long and take your chances on winning it up field. In today's game you are nearly as well off putting it out to get possession back from the opposition. Seriously though just count the turnovers either directly or in the very next phases of play as I have.

Joe got 4 that day. Fintan came on and took the last one after Joe was injured and nailed it. We got 5 points from sidelines that day, which was pretty remarkable.

Sure was - but to get them from both the left and the right is some skill also.

If it was a player from a top hurling county and well known, it would be over the news.

Just read, he narrowly missed a 5th sideline cut point in the same game....

Adrian Fenlon was a master at it.

There's a young lad playing under 14 for the harriers that's scored 17 line balls in 6 games.

I read a piece in 2020, saying that Canning's 0-4 was a record, beating the previous 0-3 championship record held jointly by Martin Storey and Michael Moroney. The article also stated that Canning's career championship 'cut' total of 0-28 was 20 points clear of his nearest rival at that time.

Young Murray from Trim just missed a 5th - very close apparently.

I think Canning finished with 34 Championship points from sideline cuts.

The next nearest is less than 10. A Clare player, who's name escapes me.

Fintan Burke scored 2 in one match, (can't remember was it for Galway or Thomases), one off either side.

At yesterday's Roscommon Hurling final, Four Roads keeper Noel Fallon scored a goal direct from a puckout. ( Noel holds the Connacht poc fada title ) It was initially signalled as a goal but after a bit of consultation amongst the officials, it was disallowed.
Anyone know what the ruling is ?

I think Eanna Noone from Moycullen may have got 5 in a championship game in Athenry a few years ago .Open to correction on that though

Didn't a Kilkenny lad (can't recall his club) cut one from way out, well beyond halfway to defeat Ballygiblin in the AI Junior final a few years ago? I think that's the best one that I've ever seen!

Just under the hogan stand, some strike.

Thanks for that info, that places it in the 30 to 180 yard range I suppose, great to be getting into specifics on this!!

Anyone who ever had the misfortune to be seated in rows A to F in the Croker bowl will tell you that the sideline is not situated 'under' the Hogan Stand. Neither are rows A to ?, so don't forget your brolly if you're stationed in these seats, and are reluctant to 'cuckoo' around for a better drier vacated option.
