Snarky? I asked Jack_Sparrow (Westmeath) to explain the link between Wexford and Somerset.
supersub15 (Carlow), Replied, telling me something that had nothing to do what I asked.

Well there would have been significant shipping links across the Irish Sea. Somerset is located along the coast of the Bristol Channel. Diarmuid McMorrough who is buried in Ferns was deposed as King of Leinster and went to Bristol. He encouraged King Henry 2nd to invade Ireland. Henry wasn't too sure but allowed McMorrough to recruit a Norman army from around that area before heading back home through Wales where Strongbow joined him and they sailed to Ireland and landed in Wexford and invaded Ireland after Henry decided to join in.

Exactly.Sometimes we have to accept reality and facts as much as we may not like or want it.

What is " our culture"?
What aspects are "certainly diluted beyond recognition"?

All I can see is our unique games going from strength to strength (despite footballs problems) while out traditional music and dance has never been more popular have so many participants.

Ár dteanga.... trua mór do bhfuil na Gaeltachtai beagnach imithe ach tá Gaeilscoileanna ag "popáil" suas ar fud na tíre.

I'm inclined to agree with you in terms of our games and traditional music.

However, I'd suggest the influence of Christianity on our society has diminished at an incredible rate since the 90s.

While it's not uniquely Irish, they're part of who we are. The land of saints and scholars and all that.

There are of course perfectly justifiable reasons for this. The trust of the people was betrayed and destroyed.

On the other hand, we've sort of cut our noses of to spite our face in this regard.

Morality is in steep decline here.

German philosopher Ludvig Feaerbach was of the opinion that 'God did not create man, but rather it was man who invented God'. Land of "saints" my ass.

Religion has no place in the world today. Look at the state of the middle East. The priests dug their own grave with their scandalous behaviour towards children a generation ago. Thankfully, I hope, that day is gone

Replying To anotheralias:  "With the dust settled on the All Ireland and having finally started to cope with the disappointment of the All Ireland final loss , I can now reflect on a very enjoyable year. What an occasion the All Ireland final was. I know the quality of football wasnt the best , but there was some good scores, tense moments and congratulations to Armagh. They deserved it and probable needed it more than Galway, even though I think Connacht needed a Galway win more than Ulster needed an Armagh win. But what an occasion our All Irelands are. The huge amount of orange and maroon, the sporting comraderie, not a hint of violence.
One thing that fascinates me when i go to these big games is that while the supporters can be easily identified by the colour jerseys, even if everyone wore the same jersey you would know where people were from by their accents. I think its brilliant that for a small country we have such a range of accents and I hope we never lose that as part of our culture.
Even in Galway , and I'm sure other counties are the same , there are a range of accents from Connemara, Galway city, North Galway ( quite similar to Mayo, although Mayo has some nuances) , South Galway ( a tiny hint of a Munster accent) , East Galway ( a small hint of a Midlands). Even towns like Ballinasloe and Tuam have subtleties that differentiate them
As I say I think all this is fascinating and brilliant,
But I do fear that the trend is changing . I would say that less than 10% of Galway city residents now have the authentic city/Claddagh accent that is so beautiful and so distinctive (I'm not from the city but i love hearing the accent)
There is a definite convergence of accents. One phenomenon that is getting really common now is Irish people rolling their t's into d's like they do in the USA....ciDy, faciliDy, utiliDy , abiliDy, waDer
There is nothing wrong with North American accents , but lets retain our own.
I even heard a west of Ireland radio presenter recently referring to a holiday in LanzaroDe!"
Your right about Connaught as a province needing this year's All Ireland more than Ulster, 2 All Irelands in 58 seasons and none in 23 years are sad statistics.

I'm sure the other 11 in Leinster must have developed greatly since 2011.. .

I didn't mean religious control, I meant religious direction in morality. We're on a slippery slope already. I dread to think where we'll end up.

Like I said, people have good reasons for turning away from the church. I'm making the point that it could still be bad for our society.

I just thought of those statistics as the original poster talked about Connaught needing the all Ireland win.

Despite Offaly and Meath winning 3 and 5 all Irelands in the original timeframe I mentioned you are right about the other 11 in Leinster since 2011.

But when you see by far Connaught's best team over the last 20 years (a very good Mayo team) failing to get over the line and at the same time Dublin winning most All Irelands I get the feeling had Dublin been in Connaught since 2011 they would have destroyed that championship (and the teams in it) in the same way as they have Leinster, the chance to win a provincial championship each year makes a huge difference in terms of building up a team.

Anyway hopefully my county (and maybe others) can take inspiration from Galway and Armagh who have built themselves up a lot in recent seasons to get where they were last year.
The current championship structure giving us more games outside of Leinster hopefully will help the other 11 in Leinster build themselves up as well.

Definitely, sure religion was only ever a means to control people.

This is true. .

Not only has our sport and music continued from strength - it has spread amd increased in popularity in other countries, even outside of the Irish diaspora.

Accents have waned somewhat, but that's because of transport links and a greater number of people now accessing third level education, which sees huge numbers mix in cities amd urban centres.

Who actually believes in religion in Ireland and is under the age of 35?
Seriously about 3 of my large friends group from lads all over Ireland do, and they tend to believe in fear that if there is an afterlife, they need to behave to get in.

Religion is thankfully being eroded in Ireland, its not needed.
We shouldnt be teaching it past the ages of 9 or 10.
If you want to believe, believe, but dont force it on people.

I read this by the way, - I'M not a religious freak far from it but, I agree with the theory that religion is a collection of cultural systems, and world views that relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral values. in my own view even without Priests we would be fighting the same demons.
