Barney, did you hear how much this 3 year stint is costing... the full package....! Wow. Glad we didnt go for him, or we would never have heard the end of it. $$$$ Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 3975 - 19/08/2024 08:55:21 2565760 Link 0 |

He got mixed press here. He can say some off the wall things in media etc But generally speaking he did a decent job. We were competitive under him, beating and drawing with Wexford in champ I suppose the criticism might be that in key games against teams of our own level we didn't perform and that led to a couple of relegations LockLeanGayl (Westmeath) - Posts: 257 - 19/08/2024 10:05:34 2565774 Link 1 |

Has to be said you weren't at it in 2021 either. You are chronically inconsistent in a way that we down here know only too well!

That's nowhere near the sentiment among many hurling people in Westmeath. I haven't met one person who laments not getting Davy Fitz as manager. His managerial CV is lengthy but mixed considering he's managed sides consistently in top 6-7 in country. Wexford's hurling fraternity will tell you about the impact longer term of his appointment and it's not good. Unfortunately it tends to be about him and that is never a good thing. The new Westmeath manager needs to involve younger players over the next 1-3 years as based on club championship so far a number of our regulars don't have the legs for inter county. That's not a forte of Davy's.

In one of those games you referred to some Westmeath supporters left Wexford Park at half time. We weren't remotely competitive. Winning that game was a freak result, Wexford became complacent and we got late goals. The following week Antrim beat us by 12-13 points in Cusack.

Indeed. Its embarrassing. The men looking for the job couldn't care less about Dublin - or whoever else they end up with - and some of them are on record basically sneering at us over the years. Worst fools us if we pay to be insulted. I won't be contributing.

No begrudging and not any dislike of Davy a great Clare servant but reality check. Canuck (Waterford) - Posts: 2866 - 19/08/2024 14:29:56 2565830 Link 0 |
Is that a count of All-Irelands won in hurling by outside managers. If so, it should be two. Eamonn Cregan and Michael Bond with Offaly. Interestingly Offaly also had one of the two outside managers to win a football All-Ireland, with Eugene McGee. The other being John O'Mahony with my own county. Seems strange that Davy would leave Waterford with 1 year to go but possibly felt that getting out of Munster next year will be difficult. All the Leinster counties were on a downward trajectory this year so possibly 3rd spot is a realistic goal next season for Antrim. A Leinster final appearance would certainly be bonus territory. journeyman (Limerick) - Posts: 141 - 19/08/2024 16:02:39 2565849 Link 0 |
He left because of the travel and then takes Antrim who are further away. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2824 - 19/08/2024 17:08:11 2565861 Link 1 |
The man does it purely for love of the game.

Look best of luck to him and Antrim..I'll be interested to see will all players buy into the whole set up..also how Antrim hurling react to the serious media that is going to follow..it's a very strange move when the travel was a problem with Wexford and Waterford.. ?! Waterford have a far better chance of finishing 3rd in Munster than Antrim have of finishing 3rd in Leinster. 1 poor decision from an officiating team cost Waterford 3rd place, when they didn't award a throw ball when Rodgers took that last levelling 65 from a full yard inside the 65.

In fairness to the man I don't think you can say he doesn't love hurling. I don't think it's wholly true that he just left Waterford and Wexford either.

To be fair, I'm not sure All-Ireland wins should be the yardstick by which Davy is measured with Antrim Although that said, my gut feel is that the Davy appointment will lead to short-term gain for Antrim but long-term pain ElGranSenor (Wexford) - Posts: 353 - 19/08/2024 23:20:49 2565909 Link 0 |
Easier to fly to Belfast than it is to either Wexford or Waterford tbf

Yes I forgot Eamon Cregan. A miserable return for rental managers.

Yes but how many non local managers have managed the counties who have been the strongest and won the most AIs in the managerial era? Kilkenny have won by far the most AIs, but would likely have won alot or all of them wherever their manager was from. Same with Cork.
