To put some context on the run Rashida gave Friday night. In the 400m race the Bronze medal winners in the last six Olympics posted times of 49.46, 49.85, 49.72, 49.93, 49.89, 49.72 and Adeleke had a better time in 4th (49.28) and all the more impressive when you consider it was her first Olympic final and is just 21. The sky is the limit for her so long as she can keep injury free for the La Olympics. Drax_the_destroyer (UK) - Posts: 241 - 11/08/2024 01:49:58 2564569 Link 3 |
Wierd to be so negat8ve about that final performance considering our athletes age etc. It was top class and can't be seen negatively

Top class is right. Imagine the times she'd run, if she had 'whereabout' issues, like the lady who stole silver in the race, and indeed a world gold.

Amazing performance last night. Took a GB national record to deprive Ireland of a medal. I wish more people here would spell Rhasidat correctly. Rebel2020 (Cork) - Posts: 90 - 11/08/2024 14:44:42 2564599 Link 0 |
Did the Irish team stay away from otb ? They didn't have any interviews Kew (Galway) - Posts: 100 - 11/08/2024 22:08:20 2564670 Link 0 |
Why on earth was the closing ceremony flag bearer ( when Wiffen was ill ) given to a person who had already gone home instead of one of the competitors who were still in Paris…? Nonsensical ForeverBlue2 (Cavan) - Posts: 3029 - 11/08/2024 22:09:50 2564671 Link 1 |
Ridiculous comment. Why would going home rule him out of carrying the flag? Nothing nonsensical about a double gold medalist being chosen to carry the flag.

Unless the rower has mastered the art bi- location, I am presuming he was back in Paris, presumably to be part of the homecoming event tomorrow ??

Nothing negative about it… just a fact.. She is young and in time will be able to manage her race's better so she doesn't be out of gas in the last 50m.. but that's what happened so no point in denying it…!

The mixed relay was a strong prospect for a medal. It was understandable that Adeleke focused on her individual but fair to say a medal in the mixed relay was sacrificed. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8287 - 12/08/2024 09:03:57 2564696 Link 1 |
Do you just find random things to be angry about? Painful.

The difference is Adeleke would have run mixed relay if we had got to the final. Bol didn't run for Dutch in heats either but they have stronger replacements that us. Opportunity wasn't sacrificed as you hardly expected Adeleke to run two 400m races before her own individual races. The main reason we didn't get to the final is because our men ran slow times. If we are to compete at the global stage in the mixed relay we will need to get our men to go sub 45 seconds in their splits. I fully expected Adeleke to medal in the individual. I knew she was never going to catch Paulino but I thought she might have finished ahead of Kaczmarek as she would have learned from the European final. Pryce from Jamaica was the other threat for a medal but her legs gave in and she had a very poor semi final. I never expected Salwa Eid Naser to run as fast as she did because she hasn't run anywhere near the times she ran in the semi and final since before her drug whereabouts ban in 2019. I think this is why the Irish media from OTB and The 42 questioned her after the final because her times had improved so much! Temple56 (Westmeath) - Posts: 514 - 12/08/2024 11:07:29 2564722 Link 0 |
Brilliant Paris Olympics for our Irish team. 7 Medals and so many close calls!!! At one stage I though we had a great chance to get 10 medal. Below are all the close calls and near misses that could have made a brilliant Paris Olympics even more brilliant. Temple56 (Westmeath) - Posts: 514 - 12/08/2024 11:23:39 2564724 Link 0 |
If someone runs faster than you at the Euros a month ago, why would you expect to 'learn' how to run faster than them a month later? You might, but equally you might not. You thought she might, I thought she mightn't.

Sonia O'Sullivan is passing off too much blame there. The Dutch got to the final without Bol. It is harsh to blame men for Ireland not making the final without Adeleke.

The bread and butter for any athlete is their individual event. Their professional contracts are almost exclusively based based on their performances in individual events. While relays are nice, these are individual athletes who have trained for years in an individual sport to perform in their event. Rhasidat is a young athlete at her first Olympics. She doesn't have much experience going through the rounds yet. Her priority is to give herself the best chance of performing in her own event. She and her coach felt that running the mixed relay before her own event wasn't the best for this. Kaczmarek didn't run in either the heats or the final of the mixed relay. Poland qualified for the final without her, but she still decided not to run in it. She will say the decision paid off. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2187 - 12/08/2024 13:53:08 2564764 Link 0 |
I thought O'Sullivan made a highly dubious comment in the aftermath of the Irish mixed relay 4x400 team's performance. It was "we need more men capable of running sub-45 seconds". She wasn't even picked up on it. But imagine the uproar if a male pundit said "we need more women capable of running sub-50 seconds". Disclaimer: I might have the figures of 45 and 50 incorrect, but the point stands. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2621 - 12/08/2024 14:03:25 2564768 Link 1 |
