County Teams Expenditure At €55M Vs Amateur Status?

Not sure if the new GAA Amateur Status Committee was discussed previously, so here goes. Jarlath Burns setup an Amateur Status Committee to review how the GAA can best preserve it's Amateur Status in this inter county world of high performance and high expenditure.
The GAA believe Inter county teams expenditure for 2023 was estimated to be approx €55m! This new committee is planning to report back with proposals at the end of 2024 on how best to maintain the inter county team Amateur Status.
Suggestions & sound bites reported in the media include:
- A new county team licensing system, each county will need a licence to compete, licence approval based on compliance with audit & governance criteria.
- A financial ceiling on inter county team expenditure & tackling under table payments.
- A new Player welfare system, a closed off season, possible limit on cardiovascular loads & training loads via GPS.
- Examining the current requirements on an Amateur player in full time employment trying to maintain the additional time demanded of them to behave like a Professional player in this high performance environment.

I wonder would more players be lost to other sports if the GAA at club and county teams had not upped their level of forgive the word "professionalism ". You can't unwind the clock. What you can do is have a CAP to level the playing field. It is not okay to have one team spending 50M and another only having 20M with both competing in the same competition.

Too much talk about having a financial ceiling and not enough talk about teams near the basement with less opportunities if sponsorship and endorsements.

There is a lot more to these inbalances that an arbitary cap. Some counties have to field two full senior squads, hurling and football, while others only have one. Its not a level playing field on do many levels.

You can't total from two different sports. If the new sum is 50M then the CAP should be for teams competing in the McCarthy Cup. A CAP also for the teams in the McDonagh Cup and promotion to the McCarthy Cup would put them up to the same as the other teams. Something similar for the Sam Maguire. It is unacceptable to have a county with access to money for paying 55 backroom staff competing in the same competition with a county who has only funding to pay 15. I don't care where the money is coming. Neither do I believe that money alone makes success but it sure as hell is a big stepping stone.
