A team can play the game any way they like in football or hurling as long as it is within the rules. We are talking about constant throwing of the ball in hurling.I notice posters are burying their heads in the sand and diverting the topic to other things like buying fouls etc. That is my opinion anyway if I am allowed one seeing I am from Donegal.

No fear of that happening in Monaghan anyway

Well that is the objective of these bleeding hearts Campaigns in a nutshell. Handpassing was brought into the game by Cork and Cusack almost thirty years ago. While the Big Three ruled the Roost there was nothing about it.

Just wait until 14 hurling players get behind the ball and throw it in the net or over the bar 9like I've seen recently during a football game, then maybe you can criticise hurling. It's not constant throwing of the ball in hurling, players have perfected it so fast. Commentators here want to believe otherwise. Have a good look at the football quarter finals this weekend and let us know if the name should be changed to "Contact Volleyball "

Some great pockets of hurling up in Donegal. Even if there weren't you would still be allowed an opinion. Its a forum after all. Likewise not every hurling supporter gets a lift out of every facet of the game equally. Some lads think 30 plus points a side with scores taken miles out the field is perfect hurling. Others like hit and hope long ball with plenty of action in the 2 penalty areas, usually backs clearing the ball but occasionally the odd goal. Personally I like battles, no quarter given, diving hooks and blocks, quick passages of play, fast hard hurling. Usually these games have fewer scores, but I don't mind that. Your opinion on handpassing depends on what kind of hurling you want to see. Personally I prefer the game as it is to at any time over the last 35 odd years, as far back as I can really remember. I watched a replay of the munster final back and in the first half I counted one dubious throw/handpass from Tom morrissey. Nothing else even close to a throw. And I'm not sure that was either. In the second half the same. daveboy (Limerick) - Posts: 1197 - 29/06/2024 09:20:04 2555500 Link 0 |
Leave well enough alone would appear to be opinion of most hurling people. (We can agree on that at least :-) Too many people are obsessed with "change" just for the sake of it. Without putting too much thought into why something - the handpass in this instance - is there in first place - and what might be the consequences of removing it. Looking forward to two great games next week and would put house on that if there are any controversies, and there will be, that none of them will be about the undetectable difference between a legitimate handpass and what is not. Spot on Barney. And if we agreed on everything all that would mean is one of us was a sheep;-)

Yawn. Another hurling snob who feels obliged to have a go at football. Firstly the criticism in relation to the throwing of the ball in hurling is legitimate. It is an issue that needs to be resolved. No big deal. Just sort it out. Secondly sport is about participation. Any sport that allows people to participate is a great sport. We are blessed in the GAA to have two great sports. I love both of them. They bring out the passion in our people at local , county and national. It's unfortunate that the wonderful game of hurling has some of the most conceited arrogant supporters imaginable. Their constant b******t is very hard to listen to.

Thank you Tiger for clarifying that.

It is detectable but throws are being ignored because nearly every pass is a throw and that seems to be accepted. What is basically been said is that there is no difference between a legiitimate pass and a throw.Applying that logic why not make a throw legal.By the way I am sure you know the Donegal Hurling keeper is a Wexford man.

I couldnt watch it over again so I watched the Sunday game Highlights. As I said to you earlier what you see is different to what I see and in the highlights alone I could see several very dubious hand passes and several stonewall throws and from both side. How you could only see 1 is beyond me.

Or just things as they are? Refs know when someone is tearing the bottom out of any rule and most of them do so effectively. We'll end up with 32 touch judges and VARs and lads measuring steps with chains and delays of ten minutes while a committee pours over sideline cuts if some people get their way. Hurling is a mad chaotic anarchic sport that has survived within a small number of clear guidelines for a long time, and will continue to. I'll finish this debate as i started. Hurling is absolutely fine. All sports need a tweak here and there are I've posted several beneficial changes in last 10 years that have been good. There will be 80k in croke park for an AI semi final on Sunday. An outrageous crowd. The round Robin attendances are soaring. U 20s AI finals sell outs years now. The product is outstanding and people are putting their hard earned money up to show this in an incredibly tough time on the pocket. Don't fall into the trap of change. As I've said other sports have gone way too far. Some posters here have anterior motives for whatever reason they have. daveboy (Limerick) - Posts: 1197 - 29/06/2024 14:11:02 2555557 Link 0 |
I haven't gone to a Dublin football match in over 30 years.

In the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship there were 19 games played. How many attendances were above 10,000? Very, very few. How many attendances in the National Hurling League Division One were above 10,000? Very few. The final of the National Hurling League Division One drew a pathetic crowd of 12,000. Most inter county hurling matches in Divisions 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B and in the Joe McDonagh, Christy Ring, Nicky Rackard and Lory Meagher cups are played in front of very small to non existent attendances. The attendance at the combined Christy Ring, Nicky Rackard and Lory Meagher finals was tiny. Was there 1,500 in total there? You'd get a bigger crowd at Dublin Cumann na mBunscol finals. The big attendances at the Munster Championship and All Ireland series games are very much the exception to the rule. I agree with you that hurling itself needs very little change.
