I played in the 80's and 90's and can assure you it was not that hard to throw up the ball and handpass it. You must not have played much yourself if you think it is hard to put an inch or two between a hurling ball and your hand, or else you weren't very good at it.

Is the rule not clear though ? There is nothing in the rule that says your opponent must not be able to get it. Or you can now throw it because the game is faster than the 70's.
