The SDLP can do SFA about it (until an election anyhow) and even at that, they should be supportive if that's what he wants to do. They hardly now expected a man involved with the GAA all his life to just give it up for politics? They should be careful what they wish for as he'll just go independent and they'll have no seat. Peter Fitzpatrick combined his political & sporting work for many years without any hassle so I can't see why it would be an issue as long as his constituents are happy.

I'd say this will all blow over, I think the SDLP only have 5/6 seats these days, I doubt they'll want to lose one over something as trivial as this. Going forward there wouldn't be too much overlap between assembly sitting and him needing to be on Laois duty somewhere, so a slap on the wrist is dished out, some water will pass under the bridge and all will be forgotten. In hindsight he clearly should've deputised to his selectors and coaches for one evening, but there's not much that gets between those South Armagh boys and their football! It looks like the party leader is trying to strong arm him into giving up his seat so I doubt it will blow over. It's certainly a distraction that Laois could do without. There's a lot of anger locally about what the party has done to him. Either way, all he has to do is sit tight and do nothing.

Late to the party here, but if a Div 3a and 3b is a good idea, you'd have to seed it so that you wouldn't have all the better teams in one group and someone catering to promotion in the other. That promoted team would gain nothing in the short term. Also, you'd need to mix it up as well from year to year so you don't have, say, Leitrim vs Carlow for several consecutive years and Leitrim vs Antrim none of the time. (I think the old 1A/1B/2A/2B of the 00s might have been guilty of that but I haven't researched it.) And while I wouldn't quite advocate for a 3 (North) and a 3 (South), you'd still need to balance things a little so that you wouldn't have Antrim travelling to, say, Tipperary, Wexford and Waterford in the one campaign.

When you read, " "This was a historic day that saw the restoration of devolved government, the election of the first nationalist First Minister and Leader of the Opposition. People rightly expect their elected representatives to be there for work." supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 3050 - 06/02/2024 19:59:22 2524828 Link 0 |

Well the Laois hoodoo remains We wre 5 up and it took laois the brst part of 20 mins to score Got completely turned over I will stick with my original prediction of Laois and Leitrim for promotion Blackbog (Carlow) - Posts: 713 - 17/02/2024 19:54:00 2526538 Link 1 |
With London and Waterford still to play I'd say you could chalk Laois down as promoted, looks like a complete dogfight for 2nd, I know Leitrim have a 100% record but that was against the 2 worst teams in the division.

Yeah Laois started slowly, kicked some awful wides. We were lucky that ref didn't play advantage for that Carlow goal around the 20 minute mark, that could've changed the complexion on things. We started using Roche our keeper as another midfielder on Carlow kick out and completely turned the screw on the Carlow keeper's kick outs and a good few started to go astray. Laois definitely look better conditioned and better defensively than last year. Disappointed with the Carlow tactics of sticking 15 men inside their own 45 yard line when defending and completely gave up the Laois kick out every time, thought that showed Laois far too much respect that wasn't really merited, but watching Darragh Foley standing on his own 45 line and far away from the Laois goals was OK by me! 3 wins from 3 and with the London game at home and Waterford looking to be in a bad spot, 5 wins will surely see us up Laoisvillian (Laois) - Posts: 87 - 17/02/2024 20:44:18 2526556 Link 0 |

So after round 3 Laois look to be clear favourites a cut above the rest Blackbog (Carlow) - Posts: 713 - 18/02/2024 17:09:55 2526716 Link 1 |

I was the other side of the field and he did grab hold of his jersey but was surprised he gave it. He was very poor in general.

If that's going to be the standard going forwards there's going to be a dozen penalties in every game for the rest of the year.

Laois are pretty much promoted at this stage seem to be at a different level to the rest so far anyway. Barrowsider (Carlow) - Posts: 1661 - 19/02/2024 10:25:59 2526889 Link 1 |
Well ok, look at this way; if it's not a penalty, what is? Does it have to be an arm around the neck before the ref can even consider it? Because a pull is a foul.

Both of them were going for the ball. Forwards and backs are grappling when any ball goes in in hurling or football. Even soccer. As it was the ball was a good bit away from the 2 of them when it landed anyway, either due to the wind or tail on it when it was kicked in. Not 1 of the Leitrim players appealed for a penalty.

It was a foul and I think all the furore about it is a little over the top from people who weren't there. The disallowed goal for Leitrim was very debatable. Anyway it is time to focus on the next round. Wexford are a strong team and we wish them well. joeman123 (Leitrim) - Posts: 504 - 19/02/2024 23:02:27 2527108 Link 1 |
