In Offaly's situation, it might be a case of absence makes the heart grow fonder. It's been awhile for Offaly, in both codes.

meath and louth sold out for saturday week im hearing. granted inniskeen only holds a small capacity but it'll be great for the occasion and atmosphere. much better than a bigger crowd drownded out by vast emptiness MalsBalls (Monaghan) - Posts: 207 - 16/05/2024 10:35:24 2545055 Link 0 |
The only way it is a real game of consequence is if both Dublin and Mayo go into it have lost their opening games to Cavan and Roscommon.

All known form suggests D v MO will be to decide who goes straight to the Quarter Final. It's a Group game so won't attract the big event types. Probably 6,000 jackeens and similar no of Rhibarbs. I'd suggest around 13/14k at most. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2053 - 16/05/2024 11:42:03 2545071 Link 0 |
True. Still, it shows a strong connection between the community and their teams. Was one of the great features of last year's underage competitions. Some serious hurlers. Screeney is almost at Canning level at same age. Perhaps a small bit of exaggeration but close!

That definite? Dublin and Mayo league regulars alone would fill Hyde. Does of course depend on where both teams stand at last stage, but likely to be something at stake, most likely the plum first spot.

Dublin and Mayo "non event" league games draw average combined crowds of well over the capacity for Hyde.

If that's true then it's practically Mayos home ground this championship! Yell have played there more times than us.

Some crowd at the Offaly U20 match last night. Looking like another 40,000 plus crowd for the Cork match this Sunday. dingle82 (Down) - Posts: 231 - 16/05/2024 14:09:00 2545113 Link 0 |

Dublin County Board not been told where the Mayo match is yet. Still hoping for Thurles. Might even be excuse for stopover for a hurling match depending on how things pan out. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3348 - 18/05/2024 10:49:01 2545356 Link 0 |
Why would you bring dublin mayo out of their way to thurles? Surely somewhere better and easier for people from both counties to get to would be a better choice?

Because, it has been by far the biggest draw in gaelic football for ten years. Always fills Castlebar for league, gets well above the average 20k plus for Dublin home games in CP; brought 60,000 as part of full house in quarter finals last year. A group game with something riding on it, as there will be, would easily get 30,000. Hyde holds 19,000? Tullamore, Portlaoise around same. Limerick would suit for size and transportation for Dubs. Or better yet, bring it to Salthill. It would sell out fast and attractive to neutrals too. No harm Dubs doing more travel now and again shaggykev (Donegal) - Posts: 286 - 18/05/2024 11:33:22 2545364 Link 0 |
Love them or hate them or somewhere in between the 4 Provincial Football Championships attracted around 270k attendances. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2053 - 18/05/2024 11:38:27 2545366 Link 2 |
Mayo would prefer Thurles to Limerick I would imagine. No one likes Salthill, I take it you have never been there? Great pitch, nightmare if even 5/6,000 there.

Definitely. Although Inniskeen is on the smaller side, give me 5000 thousand people wedged into a smaller ground on top of the players over 25 or even 30 thousand people in Croke park. Take note GAA, this is what should be done more often instead of playing these double-headers in a soulless Croke Park or even stand alone Dublin fixtures that only fill a quarter of the ground

Totalling agree…. If a stadium can hold 10000 why move the fixture to the likes of Croke park to accommodate a few hundred more… first come first served and let's get some atmosphere back to our games….

Well the idea seems to be that players love playing there, and croke park is special, so everyone should be allowed the chance to play there. I'm not sure about the first point, personally I'd be embarrassed playing on front of 70 000 empty seats. As fhr the second point, seeing as how every Tom dick and Harry has played there at this stage, well then it's not really special anymore. The optics are atrocious too, it simply looks better when a stadium is full however small it is. Compare the vast emptiness of croke park on most days to the heaving stadia in the Premier league and it's no secret which one a young kid would find more seductive. 9,117 in Castlebar, 7,692 Salthill, "a little over 8k" in Kilkarney. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2053 - 18/05/2024 20:37:10 2545468 Link 0 |
