Donegal Tyrone was a sell out, dont understand why it wasn't in Clones

The reason for the small attendance is the fact its a dead duck provincial championship where the winner is known before a ball is kicked.

Yeah very surprised at the Armagh Down attendance, Armagh have a big following, could draw close to 10k for a league game. Ulster semi final with Down, both sides having gone well in the league and it only draws 12k. That's a very disappointing crowd.

Was at the Down/Armagh game and I reckon someone was telling a porky. The attendance seemed to be in the 17/18000 region.

Looking at the TV coverage the attendance looked smaller than usual for an Armagh game. If that was 17/18k fair play. I thought both terraces behind each goal would be busy unusually not. Celtic Park (albeit a smaller ground) on Sunday looked much more packed together with an official attendance of just over 14k.

I was at Clones for this match and I thought the attendance was about 11,000 to 12,000. Down had about 1,500- 2,000 and the rest were Armagh fans. Thought Down played a great game in what was a hostile atmosphere and were very unlucky to lose. Down wanted this match to be played in Newry or Armagh which would have meant a better crowd but Armagh blocked it. The attendance was about 9,000-10,000 less than the Ulster semi final between the two teams at Clones last year. REDANDBLACK30 (Down) - Posts: 1673 - 02/05/2024 16:01:01 2542497 Link 0 |
Another reason for the dramatic drop in support for Dublin is the earlier start to the Championship season…. The fact that vital Premiership games and Celtic games are still ongoing would be more of a priority to the vast majority of their support…coupled with young people not having the cash to be wasting on turkey shoots…. Leinster Championship is in serious trouble…

Your petty hatred of Dublin is sad. Where were all the Cavan "Gaels" the day you played Monaghan in local Derby? Watching their beloved United or Pool or City most likely.

Massively unpopular opinion alert but I've always felt that mixing fans together at intercounty games kills the atmosphere alot too. Galway9801 (Galway) - Posts: 1942 - 02/05/2024 23:24:48 2542560 Link 1 |
It's not a hatred of Dublin it's a plain fact…. Every county has lost support for Championship games but not at the level Dublin has ….. Very unusual for a successful team to loose over 70% of their supporters even when the games are a gimme.. just ask Celtic fans…

I agree to an extent.I remember back in the late 80 /90s the atmosphere would be electric between Dublin and Meath. The Dubs had the hill and Meath had the canal end(apart from a few scattered Dubs and both ends would try and out sing (cheer)each other and the rest of the stadium would join in.Why not give the canal end to one team and the hill to another and lower the orice for each wnd and then maybe the atmosphere would improve.

Dublin are getting bigger crowds for the championship than for the league - not much bigger but averaging in 20,000s compared to around 20,000 for league. Same crowd basically as can be seen form fact that same section of Hill is packed for both. so factually you are wrong. Silly comment on our supporters being English or Scottish soccer supporters in majority. Soccer on TV is as popular in every part of country, unfortunately, and at lot more dominant in other places than Dublin when it comes to GAA and TV coverage. You could put all on the hill and shut the rest of the place with all the few thousand that are turning up to games….

It's not a silly comment but an actual fact … and another one you won't like to admit to is that Dublin has by far the highest percentage of followers who are not even members of any GAA club…. but they will soon be back as the soccer season across the water is drawing to a close…!!!

I'd say you about as much about Dublin GAA as I do about astrophysics.

I have no idea how your ascertain could even be researched re Dublin has highest number of non GAA members supporting the football team. I would say your ascertain could just as equally made of any county playing primarily Gaelic Football. A hardcore of the GAA hurling community tend not to attend Gaelic Football and visa versa, applies to Dublin too. But that wouldnt be something Cavan have to grapple with. If Dublin attendances are down you can bet those supporting Dublin are GAA members.

Taking huge gambles that cannot be reversed if and when they go wrong, and not really seeming to care either, is pretty much standard practice among leadership throughout irish life at the moment, so don't take it too personal. In fairness to the gaa they probably saw the growth of soccer and rugby through the 90s and 2000s and decided that they needed a strong Dublin to compete for hearts and minds but it's turned into a bit of a frankensteins monster, (thanks in no small part to great work being done by unpaid ordinary Dublin GAA volunteers btw). I can tell you that last year I went to a Dublin senior club championship double header in Parnell Park with a Dublin friend and there wasn't 300 at it even though there was 7/8 Dublin players on show over the 2 games… Now the football was very good but the support was pitiful which proves Dublin supporters have no real loyalty to any club team… there would be far more at a junior club game in Cavan and probably all other counties.. He also said there is no charge into club league games as it wouldn't be worth while which I find baffling…

There is no problem getting Connaught final tickets, you can even buy seated tickets on Ticketmaster. That is one good thing about Derry getting knocked out of Ulster. You can enjoy the build up to the final without the ticket drama. Especially reading people bickering online. PattyONeill (Derry) - Posts: 253 - 04/05/2024 14:48:46 2542820 Link 0 |
Well that is total BS. Have you any clue of the membership numbers of Dublin clubs?. Obviously not.
