I agree wholeheartedly that you should play for the club of the parish (or other catchment area) in which you live. Of course, there are some counties that don't have such a rule. It's probably for good reason in a county like Dublin, but it would cause chaos in a county like Wexford. Anyway, where the rule exists - the problem is not so much with the rule itself. The problem is how it can be easy to skirt around it. Relatively easy, for example, to get a financial statement or utility bill for any address you want. I can log onto my online banking and change my address there in just a minute or two. Or somebody in the area of the club I want to transfer to could put my name on their electricity account for a couple of months. Now I'd have two forms of "proof" of permanent address to send in to the county transfers committee. And unless the committee hires private investigators to follow me around and see where I really do sleep at night, then they've really no choice but to take those "proofs" at face value. Fair enough - I stand corrected.

Fair play to them. They got what they wanted, life's too short to have regrets.

In a county like Waterford with 48 clubs I don't see why it is necessary to run off the championship in a few weeks. Playing every week with teams missing key players through injury. Neil Montgomery and a few others missing for Abbeyside. Including the up and coming Sean O'Callaghan Waterford underage player. Neil came on but clearly injured. Not saying they would have beaten the gunners buy might have avoided a hammering. Dungarvan had to play with Patrick Curran in the semi. Happens a lot in Louth. The bigger clubs gain sometimes but the smaller ones gain also. Its never going to change in our county. Shearer (Louth) - Posts: 885 - 04/09/2024 13:05:04 2568400 Link 0 |
There is some talk now about restructuring. Rural clubs amalgamating and restricting club sizes in city areas. Not sure how that would work because the clubs generally grow around some other centre in the community. In the case of Ballgunner Passage a senior club operates in close proximity with cousins and family on both sides. They are dominating minor also and their intermediates would be better than most of the senior teams. Canuck (Waterford) - Posts: 2866 - 05/09/2024 14:55:45 2568594 Link 0 |

It's well known when Mickey Harte was in charge, he told Tommy Durnin and Conor Early to transfer from their clubs as they were only Junior Tommy's transfer to Mary's was rejected and he joined Inneskeen in Monaghan instead. Early went to Na Fianna in Dublin St Mary's (Senior champions with a panel of 45+ players) this year got a new player from neighbour club St Kevin's This lad was St Kevin's best player in 2022. Put in a transfer to Mary's which was rejected He never played any football in 2023 and transfered to Mary's this year and has started every Champ game for them DundalkGael (Louth) - Posts: 916 - 30/09/2024 15:58:36 2572579 Link 0 |
There was talk of Conor Early going to the Blues or the Raghs before he went to Na Fianna.

Surprised the Blues never got him years ago. They seem to poach a lot of the top talent around Drogheda DundalkGael (Louth) - Posts: 916 - 01/10/2024 13:26:38 2572692 Link 0 |
Just seeing this now. I'm not being smart but the irony of picking Richie Hogan is brilliant. Richie and his family actually went to the county board to have the parish boundary moved 100m further. They then had to go to the Bishop and eventually moved it so he didn't have to play with Bennettsbridge.

I'm not Dundalk Gaels man Was an odd one alright, serious trouble in D'hill over it. They won't be fielding a team next season I'm led to believe and they have literally 0 underage players DundalkGael (Louth) - Posts: 916 - 06/10/2024 14:21:05 2573249 Link 0 |

I see the kerry hurler Mackessy joining up with Kilkenny next year. Great to see as hurling is only a hobby in the Kingdom county. LimerickForLiam24 (Limerick) - Posts: 143 - 15/10/2024 12:48:52 2575040 Link 0 |

Not sure they got relegated just because he left. They lost every game they played this year, by a cumulative total of 76 points. He's a good player, but not that good.
