The abuse and vilification refs receive has been a part of GAA culture for too long; easy for supporters, players and managers to blame to blame the ref. befair (Down) - Posts: 238 - 07/07/2023 14:33:42 2492932 Link 0 |

Yes, the incident involving a Roscommon club last year where a ref was assaulted at an underage game made the news. The audio that accompanied footage of the incident was full of typical guff being hurled at the official. It's going on at almost every game from u8 to senior GAA and LGFA . There are supporters who believe that their players never conceded a genuine free, ever. This incident is clearly a police matter. The rugby standards and culture regarding match officials has to be adapted. The amount of BS hurled at linesmen and 4th officials by managers is outrageous as well as being counterproductive. It must be punished by free kicks or black cards to captain of team of offending manager.

The accepted and lauded abuse of referees at club games by 'great club men' was always going to escalate to the violent incidents we are regularly seeing now. No other outcome. We reap what we sow. bad.monkey (USA) - Posts: 4649 - 07/07/2023 15:16:25 2492954 Link 0 |
There is too much violence in Irish society full stop.Nothing to do with any individual county.Look at the news 2 or 3 murders every day.Cocaine everywhere driving people psychotic and nothing being done about it.Its a wake up call for the GAA but society is doing nothing about it so expect worse in the future.

I didn't think people from Cookstown went to football matches, they all seem to be driving around Asda car park in circles in twin cams. PattyONeill (Derry) - Posts: 263 - 07/07/2023 15:22:24 2492959 Link 0 |
I'll agree with most posters ( except the Tyrone and Cookstown bashers ) but this is a new low and anyone carrying a knife needs locked up. No doubt when this comes to court , someone somewhere will give him a character reference to get him off. 5 years behind bars and if he's a club member ban the club . There was a man killed at a club match before and it could easily happen again. Saynothing (Tyrone) - Posts: 2291 - 07/07/2023 15:45:47 2492965 Link 1 |

Sorry, I'm certainly no Tyrone fan but this is unprecedented and totally unheard of in Tyrone or anywhere else. This is a whole other level. Jail time surely, sick stuff.

I actually thought it was gang related or something that just happened at a game. but what I'm hearing is that it was a disgruntled supporter. I mean ffs. What the actual hell is wrong with people?? Look where it has happened. Continuous and worrying amount of incidents. All ref's should pull out of Tyrone immediately. countyman2022 (Wexford) - Posts: 788 - 07/07/2023 17:14:35 2492993 Link 0 |
I think you've hit the nail on the head there, far too much violence in society .

People can nearly do what they like nowadays and if anyone questions this they are accused of infringing on others so-called rights etc. There has been a culture in Ireland for too long now of "if something happens its not my problem as long as it doesn't affect me or if it happens outside my door. And as long as it doesn't affect me, I don't give a toss" It is not a good thing that people can do what they want these days. Maybe a culture of lawlessness has crept into Ireland. The way things are going, I won't be surprised at all if society goes completely lawless a few years down the road. There is also a culture of the wants of the individual being MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN the needs of the community. And this is not conductive to a stable society. Dreadful, dreadful event and my thoughts are with the people, especially the young players who were present at the time who'll see this image played over in their heads for a long time. All the best to the people of the Tyrone club. Young_gael (Meath) - Posts: 597 - 07/07/2023 20:13:38 2493016 Link 0 |
Totally shocking and completely unacceptable. Whatever grievances you may have over decisions, scores, fouls etc to do this is beyond the pale. Some of the sideline anti social behaviour that goes on at youth games is scandalous and must be tackled now.Hopefully the various social and GAA authorities will deal with this in the strongest possible terms. Travel to a match in Tyrone. I've been to Healy park in Tyrone on a good few occasions and it always a nice experience and the people were lovely. It's a place I will continue travel to.
