Inconsistent Refereeing

Some of the rules don't help them, but the referees don't help themselves either.
In salthill the other day, no one knew which way the ref would give a free when a player gets "bottled up". If you watch each one of those occassions, you would find it hard to say why a free was given in each case.

I've never seen two refs apply the following rules consistently,
1. Steps rule
2. Obstructing a quick free
3. Dissent
4. Outside hand tackle
5. Shoulder to shoulder tackle
6. Pick off the ground
7. Handpass rule
8. Tackle on goalkeeper outside the small rectangle
9. Hop ball restart
10. Black card rules
11. Ticking/yellow card/red card/persistent fouling rules
12. Advantage rule
13. Position from which a free should be taken


They are the basic rules of play and 50% of the time you can get away with breaking them.

When both sides are complaining about a ref then I think it's fair to say that it's a poor referee, and if you're not allowed call that out then who's going to raise standards. When a ref loses his ability to make judgements based on rules and goes on whether or not he's evening things up or he's already given a soft free to one team then they really shouldn't be reffing at a high level. Perfect example was the Cork Dublin league game, ref makes an atrocious decision to send off a cork player, a few minutes later he evens it out by making another terrible decision in sending off the Dublin player. There are plenty of good referees, but there are plenty who ref the game with awful bias based decisions and are not consistent on rules.

then how do teams start off with 15 when they were reduced to 14 with a player sent off.

In the Munster final a Kerry player was bundled to the ground well outside the rectangle. The punishment was a black card to Cork and a penalty to Kerry as it was decided to be a goal scoring opportunity.
Last weekend a Roscommon blayer blatantly pulled down a Cork player just before half time. There was no card of any colour produced by the referee. Now that's inconsistent.

This is one silly anomaly kind of happened on the Donegal county final in 2020. The naomh conaill (NC) player got a black in the last minute of injury time and the team started with 14 in et. There was confusion with subs and in et and the whole thing got very messy.
What the NC player should have made sure he got a red instead of a black. NC would have started the et with 15 men and all would have been ok.
It's one hell of a rule encourages you to get sent off!

Management would be remiss not to make sure their players to be aware of this in the last few mins of a match that could go to et. You probably don't want a straight red but a second yellow or black will do the job. Maybe a bit of ott verbals after the black card.

One of the problems here is that supporters don't understand black cards which in turn gives the impression that refs don't.
I presume you are referring to the Donie Smith incident in which he injured himself. Definitely not a black card.

It was a deliberate pull down. That's what the black card is for

In both codes one of the reasons for some of the pulling and dragging is there is no legitimate tackle anymore. If a player delivers a good should on shoulder and the receiver goes down a free is given.

Not a deliberate pull down. Cork player added to it by holding Smith's arm.
