Replying To Whammo86:  "I don't think that's the answer. I don't think there is an answer as part of the split season.

There just shouldn't be a split season.

I also don't think it's fair on the club game that county managers get access to players for up to 19 fixtures a season.

You've those 19, 12 club championship between 2 codes for dual counties and up to 11 Provincial and All Ireland club fixtures across 2 codes. 42 weeks of the year is too much in 52 weeks with rest time and an off season needing to be provided.

Football needs to get its county game down to less fixtures."
A defined split season has to remain. If league at the end of March to All-Ireland finals in September is the intercounty window, club championships would take precedence from October to mid March.
By the nature of the club championships, nearly 2 months are taken up with the provincial club and All-Ireland club championships. That's the nature of knockout. County championships need a good 3 months. County leagues in the months leading up to the county championships gives all other club players plenty of game time.

Very hard to recreate the 1950s.

I agree but you also need fewer inter county football games to allow for that.

Are my five windows asking too much?
I amend a bit from what I had before:

Starting from last week in Jan
- Club league play for 8 weeks; followed by
- Intercounty Provs & league for 10 weeks (smaller 4 or 5 team divs, stagger byes with split rounds); followed by
- Club championship (Jun-Jul) for 8 weeks; followed by
- Intercounty AIC (Aug-Sep) for 9 weeks (Sam 12, P O Se 12, Tailteann 8, with group phase - based on Provs & league earlier); followed by
- Club Prov & AIC for 8 weeks.

Season is Club (3x8) + County (10+9) = 43 weeks
Off Season = 9 weeks.

While a 43-week season is long, players get breaks outside windows and bye weeks within.

It is tough to come up with any ideal solution.

Rubbish.

No chance of running club championships off in 8 weeks in counties where hurling and football are both played.

Concerts in Croke Park in August or September diminish the prospects of a return to September finals. March to September would be a better intercounty season but the GAA want to attract lucrative concerts for Croke Park.

I don't think a defined split season has to remain.

A decent compromise in my book would be for leagues in both codes be separated from the championship and played in February and March alongside Provincial and All Ireland club championship with club players not eligible for the county until they are out.

There is a place for secondary competitions as an avenue to try new players.

From an intercounty fans perspective March to September is ideal. However any polls taken from intercounty players show no desire to go back to September finals.

The only reason I would support cutting the recent link of league to championship is that it would give a chance of a break intercounty players who made it all the way to the club championships. There would be less pressure on them to return early.
On the flip side, has there been any complaints from the GPA about the short gap from All-Ireland club finals to the start of the Allianz league?

Nothing from the GPA.

Conor Glass had this to say and I think I read a previous interview of his talking about the demands of the new calendar. It doesn't feel sustainable.

Big lover of boring county football taken over by money chasing managers and a dislike for the clubs that provide the players are we…? Game on a downward spiral because of lads like you…who only see county football

Vast majority of the general public only see the County game (and usually Championship only).
They only notice Club games if the locals reach a County Final.

All-Ireland final day is upon us. I won't say much on the topic today. Glass says he should have taken two weeks off after the All-Ireland club final. If intercounty managers and intercounty players are ok with playing the first two rounds or so of the league without players who have played in the All-Ireland club finals, we can all get on with the current split season.

And there lies the big problem…. In Dublin for example they reckon only a very small percentage of supporters going to county games are actually members of any GAA club…

To solve your "problem"....
Do we force people to join GAA Clubs?
Do we only allow members into games?
Maybe make non members wear a yellow star and "relocate" them all to Cavan?!

Unlucky yesterday Legendzxix. Dublin's goal came when it looked like you'd gotten a grip on the game. Dublin then just had a little bit extra in terms of street smarts then to win it out. Hopefully this is a bump in the road for a very promising young group of players.

How do they get tickets for intercounty matches then

Utter nonsense, One of the reasons Dublin no longer has the sort of **** on the Hill at semi finals and finals that throw bottles down on people and start fights among themselves and others is that almost every ticket is allocated to club members, Parnell Pass holders (lifelong supporters and mostly older club members) and season ticket holders (same demographic as PP).

Who told you this by the way, and who do you think are the very big % who get tickets and where do you think they get them for finals and semi finals?

You strike me as a peculiarly biter chap, no harm to you.
