and That's very eye-opening about Offaly. I had a look then on Wikipedia, and I had no idea about how they weren't one of the traditional powerhouses of hurling and how the Leinster championship was the Kilkenny and Wexford show just like Kerry and Cork in the football in Munster. Great then how they became All-Ireland champions shortly afterwards. It showed that lesser teams could rise up to the very top. That's what's great about the current system; theoretically a lowly county like Leitrim could rise all the way to the top with motivation, training, work, funding, etc, all the usual ingredients. Every county can. Tacaí Liatroma (Leitrim) - Posts: 1136 - 31/05/2023 21:17:28 2483265 Link 0 |
Just checked that to confirm I wasn't more delusional than usual. 8,205 for an All Ireland hurling semi final double header! BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 3360 - 01/06/2023 10:02:17 2483302 Link 0 |
No, I didn't see that. Apologies. Anyway, good to see your lads win the Joe McDonagh Cup last weekend, even if watching it was a bizarre experience for a Wexford man, considering the predicament we were in ourselves at the time. Hopefully Carlow hurling will continue to develop going forward. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2683 - 01/06/2023 11:34:45 2483337 Link 1 |
Maybe they were on GAA GO and people stayed at home to stream them :)

Very good. I was at the Galway match. ****** rain too as I recall and i think the great Con Houlihan wrote that a dog who invaded the pitch might have been mistook for a seal :-)

It's a bit like a football game in Leitrim in the early 90s that 'no one' from Galway was at. Stuff of legend!! Was at both games myself, of course. Wet day in Dublin, rain 'topping' of the ground for a lot of the day. Joe Cooney's debut. Pretty special.

I'd been in pub in Dorset Street before hand, not unconnected to a chap who used hurl for Dublin. A few substantial bets were laid and left behind the counter. Apparently the Cork fellas arrived back out of breath but the Galway men had beaten them to it and had collected their justly deserved winnings, but had left enough for the Cork boys to have a few pints :-)

1989 was probably a year for shocks as we must remember Waterford beat Cork as well as Antrim beating Offaly. A lad from Kerry was telling me that they ran Limerick close in munster that year some lad from Kerry got a hatrick. I know twice in the 80s Westmeath beat Tipp in NHL and did Down beat Kilkenny in 1993 NHL after they won all ireland and Kerry done same to Clare in 95 after they won but I'd say those Clare lads were still on the beer as the league used to start few weeks after the championship ended. I think Mount Leinster Rangers beating Oulart that time must rank up there. I got to know a few Oulart heads over the years since I moved down here and it still sticks with them. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1268 - 01/06/2023 16:49:31 2483423 Link 0 |
Westmeath and Laois had very good teams in the 80s

In the 2006 Ulster senior hurling championship semi-final, New York beat Derry by 1-18 to 1-12. Of course nobody expected it would happen and the final was scheduled to be played in Ireland, but common sense prevailed and the final was deferred to October that year. Antrim won by 9 points in Canton Field in Boston. Tacaí Liatroma (Leitrim) - Posts: 1136 - 01/06/2023 18:20:01 2483446 Link 0 |
As far as I can remember Westmeath were the only team to beat 2 in a row champions Galway between their All Ireland wins in 1987 and 1988. The midlanders won a league game which was in held Ballinasloe. Westmeaths David Killcoyne had won an All Star in 1986 so they were not a bad team but were badly hit by emigration afterwards Jack_Sparrow (Westmeath) - Posts: 1031 - 01/06/2023 18:25:19 2483449 Link 0 |
I remember sitting in the upper Hogan middle of the pitch and having the place to ourselves. One of my friends was wearing white socks and slip on shoes which were all the rage at the time ( or so we thought). He came a cropper racing on to the pitch at full time and got absolutely smathered in muck. Its on camera somewhere.Pulling up in Ballinasloe on the way home and I remember a packet of Jaffa cakes was the highlight,Supermacs was well beyond the budget that time.Great days

Antrim beating Offaly in 1989 wasn't actually that much of a shock. Antrim had beaten them TWICE in the league that year. They also beat Wexford by 10 points. The real shock that year was actually Offaly beating Kilkenny in the Leinster final. Offaly had been poor in the league (they got relegated), but Kilkenny had only gone down by a point to Tipperary in the semi-final. CARPS (Carlow) - Posts: 760 - 01/06/2023 20:47:57 2483464 Link 0 |
Completely true, I was there as a teenager in '85, the father wouldn't bring me as Galway had no hope b AI champions Cork. So myself and the cousin got the train. We were wet behind the ears going and then it rained ! And rained. And rained. Remember Joe Cooney who was just out of minor and weighed about 10 stone was unmarkable at No 12. Unreal picture of him in Mondays paper going highest to catch a ball under heavy pressure. That day was the birth of probably the greatest Galway hurling team ever that would challenge heavily for the next 7 years.

Completely forgot about '89. I thought Waterford had blown it in the drawn match and Cork would do what they always did in replays but Waterford had their number. They sure came out swinging in the Munster final. Probably too fired up that day. Antrim of course we're brilliant. Offaly giving Antrim a guard of honour as they left the field was a real touch of class. Buachaillbui (Clare) - Posts: 124 - 02/06/2023 09:38:08 2483502 Link 0 |
I hear this a lot about the Antrim Offaly game but I actually had a few pound on Antrim. They had a decent team then and leinster hurling was not great so not a huge upset in my book although it was a breakthrough victory for Antrim

Antrim were a division one team that time and that particular Antrim team were very competitive in a number of all ireland semi finals so whilst it was a surprise they were only 4 or 5/1 to win the match from recollection. Westmeath were 16/1 to beat wexford this year . Kerry beating Waterford in the late 80s was a 8 or 9/1 upset , again a strong enough Kerry team that had rattled plenty of cages in the late 80s and early 90s . Were unlucky not to beat Clare in tralee another year , the year buff Egan must have born ! OpenStand (Limerick) - Posts: 725 - 02/06/2023 10:14:33 2483516 Link 0 |
