Greatest Hurling Upsets Of All Time

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post


Following Westmeath's defeat of Wexford over a week ago, what are greatest hurling upsets of all time? That Westmeath win is probably one (I wonder what the odds were before the game), particularly with the margin that was in it; then in 1993, Kerry (who I think hadn't won in Munster since 1926) defeated 4-13 to 3-13 in Waterford in front of 4,000 people. Away from the senior championship, when Antrim defeated Wexford 2-15 to 1-16 (the spread was 17-20 points) in 2013 after thirty-two U-21 semi-final defeats, I'd heard it mentioned as one of the biggest upsets in hurling of all time.

What do you guys think?

Sitting in the stand in Wexford, we checked the odds before the game and Wexford were 1/50, Westmeath 16/1 and the handicap was 13 points.
I read in the paper at the weekend that Westmeath were available at 1000/1 at half time.

Antrim beating Offaly in 1989 would be up there
Laois beating Wexford in 1985

But the biggest surely is London beating Cork in the 1901 final

Wexford were 1/80 to beat Antrim in that u-21 semi final. Kildare have beat them at u-20 also. Rosscommon beat them in Senior in 1984 and Meath beat them in the league in 1995. Westmeath then this year. Quite a list.

Westmeath beat KK a few years ago at u-21 when Eddie was over them.

Antrims win over Wexford in 2013 under 21 hurling semi final? I maybe wrong but I recall Antrim having a problem getting a full squad to go down and play the game!

Offaly beating Kilkenny in 1980 for me stands out. It really sent shockwaves through the hurling world.

I've been following hurling for 25 years and honestly I don't remember a huge amount of shocking results, but Laois beating Dublin a few years ago stands out.
Wexford beating kilkenny in 04 with a last second goal was pretty good too. Kilkenny were going for 3 all Irelands in a row and were widely expected to win well.

London beating Galway in the 1973 all Ireland all Ireland quarter final is a big one. Although truth be known Galway hurling pre 1975 was in a terrible place and were probably operating as the equivalent of Joe Mac or Christy Ring NY today's standards. There was better Galway hurlers on the London team than most of the starting Galway team that day, immigration and all round terrible organization of Galway hurling at the time probably played a huge part but still, on paper it's a crazy result. London gave Limerick a nice scare in the semi final then after that who famously won the all Ireland. That semi final famous for the day the two Rea brothers played against eo and marked eo. There's been a few big shocks in League hurling and the likes, Down beating Kilkenny, Roscommon beating Wexford, Kerry beating Tipperary, Kerry beating Cork
In recent years, Antrim beating Clare, Westmeath drawing and beating Wexford probably ones that stand out. Galway beating Kilkenny mighnt be a shock or surprise but the 2012 Leinster final has to be a huge shock in the manner of win, 2010 Cork v Tipp similar, Wexford 2004 v Kilkenny, Wexford v Clare 2014, Offaly v Kilkenny 1980, Limerick v Tipp 2013, Galway v 4 in a row chasing Cork in 1979, thyre some of the big shocks between big counties I can think of.

1982 Waterford 2-14 Limerick 2-13 Munster Semi final

Waterford's last Munster championship win (aside from beating Kerry) had been 1967 v Cork. Limerick were Munster champions from 1980 & 1981, were all Ireland finalists in 1980 and all Ireland semi finalists in 1981, Galway our bogey team. Waterford lost the 1982 & 1983 Munster finals heavily to Cork and didn't get back into a Munster final until 1989.

It wouldn't be like Waterford beating Limerick now. We were absolutely shell shocked when they knocked us out.

Kerry beat Clare in their first league after winning the All-Ireland in 95. Think they drew with Kilkenny at some point as well.

In some ways Kerry beating Waterford in 93 wasn't as big a shock as some people think. Kerry returned to the Munster championship in the late 80s and had put in a few good displays. They had also been doing well in Div 1 of the league. Waterford at the time, although having only on the U21 All-Ireland, would have been poor enough.

Derry beat Antrim in the Ulster championship a few times I think and that would have been seen as a big of a shock.

While Dublin wouldn't have been the strongest at the time but Westmeath beating them in 2006 was a bit of a surprise.

Kilkenny had a lot of injuries that day so maybe not that big of a shock. The same counties met in the Final 12 months later and Kilkenny won well.
