Down the decades - and I've been going to county league matches since the 1970s - I've always liked Roscommon footballers. You never got anything easy against a Roscommon team.

The amount of football purist flak that Roscommon is getting about a bit of tiki-taka is the usual hypocritical drivel that my own country has been subjected to.

As ever, when a non-traditional county does something that an established county has been doing forever, it's only the non-traditional county who will get the criticism.

I thought it was great crack to see Dublin chasing the game (something they themselves are so good at doing to other teams). And in fairness to Dublin, I didn't hear them complaining about it - Philly McMahon's comments (Barcelona does it) were very fair, and sensible. It's the sign of a great player that he can dish it out and take it too. Fair play to McMahon.

2 points:

1. Possession football is routinely practised by lots of GAA teams, and by lots of world class soccer teams. Just as every boxer who's well ahead on points jabs, slips and holds in the last round instead of being sucked into a stupid puncher's chance brawl when he does not need to. I can imagine our GAA traditionalists commentating on a boxing match and urging a man well ahead on points to start swinging the lead with no regard for the result, just to keep the half-cut "yahoo ye boy ye" brigade happy. Possession football is a legitimate tactic, and the onus is on the other team to disrupt it, not to go crying to the papers about bad, bad Roscommon not giving them the ball.

2. It's not that long ago that we were also subjected to whinging old-timers crying on about blanket defences / packed defences etc. Amazing how there is no criticism of blanket defences when the GAA morality brigade are on their latest bandwagon about possession football. How do you think a team is ever able to play keep ball for so long? It's because the other team - despite usually being behind - is not pressing, and is still stuck in blanket defence mode! There is a way to disrupt keep ball, and it involves committing everyone to attack and high energy. It's high risk of course, as you could be hit on the counter. ***But a team with a lead plays keep ball primarily because the opposition allows them to do so.*** If the chasing team, despite being behind, has no guts and wishes to stay in their shell, they're the ones who deserve criticism, certainly not the team protecting a lead.

Catholic Church and FF were the main dismantlers of their own organisations.

GAA has never been healthier when you see the sheer numbers of underage games and blitz etc. as for the Catholic Church thankfully they have no influence anymore.

The GAA should ban all activity on Sunday morning and allow young people to fulfil their religious duties.
The strengthening of their moral muscles is more important than their physical ones.

We had enough banning back when the church was in full power, they had us not far behind Afghanistan in how they were forcing themselves into people's lives. And those who shouted the most about morals were actually monsters and horrible people with not an ounce of real Chrisitianity in them.

The GAA is still a pillar of our society. The Catholic Church and their 'vows'. Some very good decent people in the church but some of their thieving hypocrites, who led a guilt culture amongst some faithful, were found out. And bailed out by the state, ordinary decent taxpayers. Who seriously believes Fianna Fáil were ever a pillar of society?

FF were the Irish equivalent of the European social democratic and christian democratic parties in their heyday. You only have to look at the high standard of housing built from 30s to 70s to see that. Like many a political party they succumbed to corruption and now no longer stand for anything.

By the way, I've never voted for them and never intend to.

Probably the only institution in the country that can never be investigated is the GAA , generations of ex players infiltrated into every corner of society. Take what happened during the crash the way properties were ripped from people and basically handed to others in the same boat . I'm sure there's not a town in the country that hasn't a story to tell of this corruption. Moving on to current times it's still rife.. as the latest hurling related scandal would confirm this.

In fairness to FF they were honest crooks, as in you knew the score with them, notld and wink and all that, and originally started off helpingout those less fortunate. FG I always found much more repulsive as they claimed to be holier than thou but actually were just as bad and with a good dash of snobbery.

FG would hever have managed to implement the sort of changes in housing, education, health etc, etc that FF govts of the radical period did.

It's gas to listen to Labour ones pretending they achieved stuff when only thing they ever did over most of their history was prop up the Gaelers.

Those honest crooks are the best kind Machaire! In fairness I used to go with my Dad canvassing for a FF man in the 70s. Proper canvassing, speeches from pillars after Sunday mass, no posting comments on Instagram. I know what you mean about FG though. The media perception is more important than reality though FG are not the only one at that social media perception game. In how many countries can an apprentice doctor with no life experience become Prime Minister. I live in Meath and was delighted to see the local TD fall because he 'forgot' he owned a house. Your own Michael Fitzmaurice is a very decent man. If they do set up a Rural Party if they've a decent candidate here I'll give them my number one. They'll put a nice dent in the share of the rest of the parties.
