However I do have a problem with the introduction of an Terrestrial pay wall that is against the very ethos of our amateur status, like I have said the GAA is now a professional body in every sense of the word. "
Why should sit at home armchair sports fans who never put a Cent into the GAA expect to get all games totally free while the real GAA people are paying to get into matches and/or volunteering loads of their time to gaelic games?

A snippet from the Oireachtas meeting

RTÉ and the GAA did not seek permission from the competition watchdog before charging the Irish public to watch games on their joint venture, GAAGO.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) originally approved the service in 2017, on the basis that it would only be available to overseas viewers, thus leaving customers in the State unaffected.

RTÉ and the GAA did not seek permission from the competition watchdog before charging the Irish public to watch games on their joint venture, GAAGO.

But RTÉ and the GAA proceeded to expand the service domestically, without CCPC approval. The CCPC on Wednesday confirmed they have opened an inquiry into the matter.

The subscription package, which this year cost €79 for access to 38 championship games, has been heavily criticized by GAA fans and politicians, with Fine Gael TD and former Mayo footballer Alan Dillon likening the service to 'a license fee increases by the backdoor'.

My take on it is because Croke Park has an undisputed 50% stake in GAAGO with a pay per view pay wall that brings the amateur status of the gaa into disrepute.

This has nothing to do with the amount of money charged to view the games, rather it's the principle of the thing and the thing being "amateur" status.

So, if we are going to have to pay for view, so too should we have to pay for play.

How are they going to pay for live broadcasts, recordings, apps, website, presenters, analysts, commentators, co-commentators, camera crews, sound crews, technical staff without subscriptions to pay for it?"]By cutting their cloth to measure until
the TV licence is replaced with a media charge which will happen sooner rather than later and I would favour that.

The silence here is deafening it must be said, so much for gaa people being an open and transparent family that welcomes all and sundry, a previous kildare poster awhile back had an acceptance issue here and seems to have accepted the exit door. I hope he comes back so I can engage with him / her.

Please continue, as you were, - - - as will I.

GAAGO to now show some NFL?
I'm already on the fence about maintaining my subscription which isn't cheap and offers me, as a Galway fan, very limited content of interest (no Galway hurling or football club games shown). And now they're expanding into the NFL? I live in the US. If I want to watch that nonsense I have other places to watch it that won't cost me a penny. So what exactly is GAAGO offering and where are they going?

Looks like they're offering three Steelers preseason games for free. Where they're going is anyone's guess. The thousands of Steelers fans in Ireland will surely complain that these very important games are not being shown live on RTE....

Having once attended a regular season NFL game in Chicago vs Green Bay (a "divisional rivalry" so a big game by all accounts), I can tell you an O'Byrne Cup match in January holds more appeal.......zzzzz

GAAGO e-mail this morning:

Thanks to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Irish GAAGO users will be able to watch their upcoming NFL preseason games free of charge on the service. The three Steelers games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Friday midnight), Buffalo Bills, and Atlanta Falcons will take place in August and are detailed below. They will be available to both existing and new GAAGO subscribers. Games can be watched live or streamed for a period of 72 hours after full-time.

This is the latest piece of activity from the Steelers in the Irish market having been granted rights to expand their brand and activities in Ireland, as part of the NFL's 'Global Markets Program'. Earlier this year, the Steelers launched a dedicated Irish Steelers podcast along with Irish social channels (Instagram: @steelersireland, Twitter: @SteelersIreland) offering unique content for Irish fans. A Steelers in-market event is due to take place later in the year with a fan watch party.

The franchise founders and owners, the Rooney family, maintain a deep connection to the island of Ireland through their ancestral roots in Newry Co. Down. Daniel M Rooney was appointed as the United States Ambassador to Ireland and was also one of the founders of The Ireland Funds which promotes peace, equality, and opportunity across the island of Ireland and among Irish communities worldwide.

The Pittsburgh Steelers played in the first NFL game to be held in Ireland when they took on the Chicago Bears at Croke Park in the pre-season "American Bowl" in July 1997.

Yeah, that is an odd decision. I live in Canada and have absolutely no interest in watching the Pittsburgh Steelers pre-season games. They are still showing 4 GAA club games this weekend though and there will be plenty more right up to and including the all-Ireland club finals. They also showed far more inter-county games than I had time to watch in both league and championship this season. It is excellent value as far as I am concerned and I will renew my subscription. I remember back in the nineties when we got far fewer games via satellite over here and it was more expensive. Also, the feed was very unreliable - it was common to lose the signal for 5 or 10 minutes in the middle of a match and other times the picture quality was so bad that it was unwatchable.

God be with the days of paying $20 to get into a dive bar in Southie to watch the game on a tiny screen!

I guess I might aswell get this subject up again.3 cork games behind a bloody paywall in hurling and think I also saw tipp/Waterford..is it 38 games I see in both codes that are now behind this..is this the RTÉ way of making money back due to the mismanagement of funds...I'd be hoping that RTÉ news channel could be used..it's being used when it suits them..it was used for the under 17 soccer World Cup in recent weeks..I'm hoping others agree with me but maybe I'm one of the dinosaur brigade.

Not everyone may agree with you, however, sure it's all about opinion etc. In a nutshell I prefer to relate to it as, "The slow road to professionalism."

In this case I'm not sure if it is correct to point the finger of blame at RTE simply because GAAGO is owned by GAA croke park and RTE, as in 50 / 50, croke park are in this to make as much money as RTE and vise versa, our Tanaiste pointed the finger of blame in this instance at croke park as he wasn't at in favour of the pay wall.

My grip with croke park is, why can they not come out straight and tell all and sundry that the gaa is on the road to professionalism in everyone's interest instead of this Cloke and dagger stuff.

This could be the next RTE controversy. Nobody can see whats going on due to "commercial sensitivity". That is not really an argument in my opinion. For example -the premier league reached an management for Sky to pay 6.7 billion for 4 years rights to show premier league football. This figure is in the public domain and so not commercially sensitive.

As a public services broadcaster RTE should not be involved in a paywall for Irish people. My idea - make it free for everyone who has a TV licence.

GAAGO need to have some big games exclusively to incentivise potential subscribers to sign up. Scrap the TV licence altogether. It's there since 1962. We're already paying more than enough in VAT on broadcast related activities that government are taking in revenue from that wasn't there pre-internet.

Any reasoning beyond that to scrap tv licence
Any links that shoe we pay more than enough in vat to cover all the TV licence does?

Its certainly not bad value at that when compared to a Sky Sports subscription. But isn't GAA a bit different to premier league football? The main problems I see with GAA Go are:

1) We already pay to have the games shown on TV through our licence fee as a Public Service
2) Accessibility - while broadband is improving many rural households are still waiting
3) The volunteer nature of GAA - a lot of volunteer time goes into making the GAA what it is; putting any games behind a paywall is a slap in the face.

Like a lot of posters here I'll grumble and pay for my subscription. The GAA board and RTE will see that as a success. Turns out the cost of loyalty is 69 euro.

If the GAA want to value the work that Volunteers do across the country to keep the organisation going they should increase the discount from 10% to 50% for all GAA members. This would show a genuine respect for all the volunteers who put countless hours running GAA clubs. Also I'm not sure what all the media outcry on 3 of Cork's matches being on GAA Go. Cork did not get out of Munster last year. Would there be the same outcry if 3 of Waterford's matches were behind the paywall?
