Not sure how many championship upsets weve had in recent years but intend to keep track of them here. The likes of Derry beating tyrone last year hardly be a big shock but a shock nonethless. Laois beating Dublin hurling 2019 might be last big hurling shock. OpenStand (Limerick) - Posts: 741 - 04/04/2023 16:10:30 2468832 Link 2 |
Mayo getting beaten defo not a shock, more a shock if they were to beat Galway again I think.

Westmeath drawing with Wexford last year was a shock, and it denied them a place in the Leinster final. Báireoir (Dublin) - Posts: 80 - 04/04/2023 16:59:25 2468858 Link 3 |
Upsets if they happen: Roscommon beating Mayo (Roscommon beating Galway) Clare or Limerick beating Cork Cavan beating Armagh Down beating Donegal (Cavan beating Donegal) Fermanagh beating Derry Westmeath beating Louth legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8773 - 04/04/2023 17:05:27 2468861 Link 1 |
I think Clare beating Cork is a big potential. Not so much a shock but I favour Tyrone to beat Derry in Ulster. London and NY are big potential banana skins. If Sligo are mentally still celebrating their Div 4 success London could be nicely positioned for an ambush. Because Leitrim just missed out on promotion I think they will be very focussed on NY but you never know. Both Leitrim and Sligo only bet the exiles by 4 points in both games last year and that was after both not playing a championship game since 2019. Woow!..... so Tyrone have already beaten Monaghan! ... A big shock to me! ... I was looking forward to that game, I didn't realize Tyrone have already won it!

You should be delighted I've taken ye out of a grueling Ulster championship and have ye fresh going into the group stage! Not saying I think it'll be easy for Tyrone but I'm tipping them for Ulster.

Going by Patricia power odds each week I will only regard a team as an upset outsider if they are 2/1 or greater, there's 9 matchs this weekend with 8 falling into outsiders ie 2/1 or greater .Offaly/Longford is tighter in the betting so no real outsiders . So in week one we have OpenStand (Limerick) - Posts: 741 - 05/04/2023 12:53:55 2469033 Link 0 |

Kerry beating an Ulster team in Croke Park in a match that matters

A Div 1 team knocked out of provincila championship is not a shock any more. They are still gauranteed their place in AI series. Shocks should not classed as shocks when they occur in knockout phase of championship

Tyrone beating the Ulster champions could be a shock. I would guess that game will be in Armagh or Clones. The last Derry Tyrone semi final was in 2009 at Casement Park. PattyONeill (Derry) - Posts: 263 - 05/04/2023 21:26:00 2469169 Link 0 |
Tyrone beating Derry would not be a shock at all. They beat Kerry and Armagh in the league and looked at times to have something about then again.

Many Tyrone people including Peter Canavan predict a Derry win so it would be a shock, or maybe a surprise would be a better word.

First Tyrone have to beat Monaghan a Division 1 team, then Derry who are not long out of Division 4.

agree with this. take clare v cork. Would it really be a surprise if a team playing for a place in the AI beat a team that has nothing to gain except maybe a kicking off kerry before going into the proper competition? the whole thing is watered down to such an extent now that it'll be hard to know what games to take seriously. Louth getting to a Leinster final would be an upset. The last time they reached the Leinster was back in 2010. Before that it was 1960. The last time they won it was back in 1957. Louth only reached one Leinster semi-final since 1998 and that was in 2010. Big game against Westmeath in the Leinster Quarter-finals just over two weeks away were there is never much between the two teams. If they beat Westmeath they will play either Longford/Offaly or Meath in the semi-final. Longford beat Louth in 2020 in the Championship and Offaly beat Louth in 2021 in the Championship. Louth have not beaten Meath in the Championship since 1975. History is against us. Ollie2 (Louth) - Posts: 1035 - 06/04/2023 17:48:47 2469327 Link 0 |
Derry would be favourites. I think it would be a tight enough game to be honest, both need to do their business in the quarters first but even if Tyrone won the Ulster Championship for me it wouldn't be a suprise.

I think we'll see less upsets this year than previous years. The new format more or less kills a big underdog like Tipp reaching All Ireland semi final. The teams that come through the group stage and reach the Quarter final and are competitive or win those quarter finals will be the county with the best strength in depth and lucky to avoid injuries. Westmeath will beat Louth and it won't be an upset!
