Are you sure it's 12000? A couple of other lads had 21000 as a figure.

All the grounds have had there capacity reduced, probably was that back in the day and is 11 or 12k now, Wexford Park was 25k after it was redeveloped in 2001 think its 17 or 18k now.

Yeah, Google says capacity in Carlow is 21,000 - it's getting the figure from Wikipedia, and don't believe everything you read there. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2856 - 17/05/2023 12:06:05 2479228 Link 0 |
The real issue here is the fact they U20 Championship is run off so early in the year. If it had have been run a month later, you could have had this Leinster Final in Nowlan Park ElGranSenor (Wexford) - Posts: 480 - 17/05/2023 13:33:37 2479246 Link 0 |
Look at the crowd at the Connacht football final 1999, if this happened in this day and age their would be a tribunal called the following week! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejM6dgpvw0o TerribleFootwork (Wexford) - Posts: 1760 - 17/05/2023 14:11:11 2479252 Link 0 |
Capacity aside Netwatch Cullen park is one of biggest pitchesin country and also has a superior playing surface with superb drainage So ideal for hurling I actually think the current ground should be developed into a 25k stadium as an alternative to games where crowds are looking lost in Croke Park Great position in terms of transport links and capacity for parking near ground Blackbog (Carlow) - Posts: 755 - 17/05/2023 14:26:07 2479256 Link 0 |
An Offaly lad posted 12000 tickets sold. So that's probably correct then. Decent crowd!!!!

Ah viking, Carlow wouldn't hold 21,000 or anything like that. Their stand is very small. 12,000 sounds more realistic.

Congrats to Offaly, absolutely huge result..hard luck on Wexford..it's a pleasure to watch a game with very little tactics.both teams went at it fair and square..all the best in all Ireland final.. CTGAA10 (Limerick) - Posts: 2507 - 17/05/2023 21:20:08 2479319 Link 0 |

Unlucky Wexford, but delighted for Offaly. I think this is a great result for hurling. Hope they beat Cork in the final. skirge7 (UK) - Posts: 254 - 17/05/2023 21:40:54 2479329 Link 0 |
well done to the 2 teams on a great game of hurling . unlike the rubbish that passes for senior hurling . there was great dskill and hurling ability shown by both teams . it wasnt like big gym bunnies running around . maybe this game will revive hurling but i doubt it . people like kinnerck and co would scoff at hurling skill like that mickcunningham (Westmeath) - Posts: 1898 - 18/05/2023 08:52:39 2479346 Link 2 |
Having seen Offaly U20 manager Leo O'Connor's comments on this, I looked up the relevant rule about U20s also playing senior, and I stand corrected. The rule that you can only play U20 or senior within a seven-day period, but not both, applies only to the Tier 1 hurling competition. It doesn't apply to Tier 2 (the Joe McDonagh Cup). So, it's not the same rule applying equally to all counties, and O'Connor possibly has something of a point here, if both their seniors and U20s have been able to use Charlie Mitchell this year in the space of just a few days of each other. But on the other hand - should it not apply equally across the board? I'd argue strongly that it should. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2856 - 18/05/2023 16:11:20 2479462 Link 0 |
I see no reason why a player should not be able to play both if fit and thought good enough to hurl senior. It has been criticised across the board by all of the counties who have reached the last stages of the under 20s, including some of the players themselves, so if the focus is supposed to be on what is good for them, then the rule ought to be dropped. Agree about the quality of the games too. Watched both finals as well as Dublin's games and a few of the other Leinster and Munster and you would have to agree that there is much more emphasis on skill levels than physicality. Some of the skills on display by all four teams in the two finals were exceptional, in large part possibly because the sort of score taking from what looked like poor positions would be coached out of lads in some instances as poor % calls. I'm in agreement, this rule is either for all counties or none.the rule is ridiculous..some under 20s played colleges hurling on a wed/thurs and lined out in league games on the sat/sun with their counties..I think this shows how far removed from reality the top brass in croke park are.. Of course it should. The rule is basically implying that burnout only occurs at Liam McCarthy which is absolutely ridiculous.

Fair play to Offaly great to see them on the way back, although obviously it would have been better for me to see them win it next year!!!! Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 15681 - 18/05/2023 21:28:13 2479512 Link 1 |
What are the chances of moving minor back to U18 and U21 again for next year? Yellow (Wexford) - Posts: 589 - 18/05/2023 21:48:48 2479523 Link 0 |
The rule as it stands is far better than last year, when playing even once at senior level would have ruled you out of U20 action for the whole season. It was actually Wexford who brought the motion to Congress to have it changed. But whether you like the rule or not, the point here is not about whether it should be in place at all or not. The point is that so long as it's in place, should it or should it not apply equally across the board? Or are you in favour of one rule for some, but a different rule for others? Since you're a Dub, I can't help asking....a bit like how only one county can have a "neutral" venue within that county?? ;) Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2856 - 18/05/2023 23:15:09 2479542 Link 0 |
