Replying To Tirchonailabu56:  "Your on the right track about population but the elephant in the GAA room is why 20% of the population from this island don't feel comfortable joining a local GAA club. Not just in the North but in every club in the south too.

Would yours and everybody's else club numbers increase if Parents from prodestant communitys took their children down to play football and hurling?

Would you be willing to vote for changes to GAA traditions anthems, nationalist club names, removal of republican and nationalist symbolism and taking the next step forward in the GAA evolution to leave behind it's nationalist origin and move towards a organization where all communitys, creeds and people from all religious and non religious backgrounds feel their local GAA club is a true cross community Hub where they feel welcome and they believe it represents the future of this country not it's past ?

It's big ask for Jarlath to take on this elephant, to acknowledge the GAAs origin but be prepared to cut these ties to the past and take the GAA organisation forward where more people no longer feel that the GAA only represents identitys which they are not."
You're talking 6 Cos I presume. Donegal too??
I know a number of people (related to some) who happen to be C of I who play gaelic games.
Granted the CofI is a very small group hereabouts.
No matter what you do out and out Unionists will find another stick to beat the GAA with.
However the "others" in the 6 Cos is a growing cohort and we should be looking at what might make ut easier for them to come aboard

Replying To CiarraiMick:  "While I agree with your point Barney, most gaa fans have nt got alot of respect for our national anthem. When was the last time the anthem got to finish before some supporters start cheering. In fact the cheering starts earlier now than it did 40 years ago. Spectators should let the anthem finish and then clap and shout as loud as they want."
And strictly speaking one should stand bare headed, to attention and face the flag, if one is to properly respect the flag and Anthem.

Not alone is there a lack of respect from supporters but a lot of players also show lack of respect..fixing boots, socks, stretching and then breaking before the anthem finishes..not sure how it can be dealt with..I will compliment all the northern teams in how they behave towards it..

There WILL be a new flag and anthem for the new All Ireland State .
Anthem will be in English/Gaeilge/Ollstherscotch.

Hopefully the Gaeilge will be better than the current one."
English and Gaeilge are language's but Ulster Scottish is only a slang. Everyone in Ballymena and surrounding areas talks like tha hi.

Flag and anthem are the least of his worries. God point about playing the anthem on shite PA systems..... not exactly respectful!

Biggest issue he will have is the movement of population centres. Certain clubs with huge history dying on their feet while other newer clubs struggling with huge numbers. Then the knock on issue is facilities within urban environs...... land is not cheap!

Replying To thelongridge:  "The Anthem is played before league games, and championship games. It is played before county semi finals, and finals, not at every club game. The minutes silence is in memory of an individual who was involved in the promotion and playing of GAA games, at county and club level.
It takes just 60 seconds, and I don't have a problem with it. I had posted references to the Anthem previously, but they were not approved by the moderators."
Fair enough but at least have one standard version and not the current cacophonous clamour that we are subjected to. Also I don't think they are necessary before league games. As for Ireland's call the least said the better but they have to accommodate the bigots I suppose. Anyway best of luck to jarlath, pity he's not starting immediately and we could see the back of labhras.

On Ireland's Call. while I be totally against getting rid of the anthem or flags or changing club or grounds names, I can actually see the point in that.

Rugby is a sport popular with unionists, and very little among northern Catholics, and while Ulster representation may be low at present there are grounds for reflecting that.

The most astute republicans/nationalists have always realised the need for accommodation and recognised that unionists are not going to transform themselves into Gaels. The key issues have always been national sovereignty - still a long way off - and reviving our own culture among those whose heritage it is. Which, while saved from extinction by the Gaelic League, GAA and others at end of 19th century is still under threat, and current trends will continue to place it under threat. Not from unionists either/

I will remove my hat, and sing the National Anthem with gusto, to it'd conclusion. I will not demean the tricolour by defacing it, or by using it in my profile photos to symbolise a political opinion or other. I have far too much respect for the nation, and all its people.

I coach kids both football and hurling in a southern border county. Of those kids, members of our club, we have all creeds and none. There are quite a few COI, and they share a surname, and are cousins of kids who are RC. Religion doesn't matter to them.

The club I coach has one of those names that a year or two ago the media were campaigning to have changed, as the originator of the club name was "cancelled". Again, it doesn't matter to the members, adult or juvenile.

The name of the club, the race or creed doesn't matter, the kids are there to play and enjoy themselves. Hopefully we will bring them through to Senior level.

I wish Jarlath Burns well, I hope he is a progressive President for our Association. I hope he represents me and Gaels like me.
