As a Leader, I expect Jarlath to be innovative - let's see how well he can influence or overcome the various powerful adversarial constituents.

I think he's a great choice. Wonderful speaker, (bearla Agus gaeilge), very measured in his response and aware of the responsibilities of the position. He will be like fresh cream and sour milk when compared to the current incumbent who let's face it was elected by the very cohort that jarlath would have issues with. I wish him well but he is up against some set of dinosaurs. And those national anthems that sound like they are being played on a marconi original, for God's sake let's get rid of them.

Well, that's a matter of opinion really. There's nothing wrong with being intercultural and welcoming. There's no need to be afraid.

You live in a part of our country where inter culturalism has obviously failed. Whatever makes you think the next one will be any better? Just look at other European countries to see what it has led to.

What facts / evidence (other than opinion) is there to support any of your comments and what is your alternative?

The comment regarding the first is self evident. The descendants of the people who settled here from the other island in large numbers have never been integrated into the Irish nation, nor never will be.

The evidence regarding the latter is as plain as the nose on your face in Paris, Brussels, Malmo, London, etc, etc.

The alternative to things that will make things worse is not to implement them.

You really just sound full of fear if I'm being honest. It's a similar viewpoint to some of our brethren up this end of the island.

You are absolutely right on this. Unionists as intransigent as they are, are no longer the main problem in the North. The opposite has happened. There should now be a Nationalist voting majority for a United Ireland but a large minority of Nationalists have been integrated/ indoctrinated into the British system. No Nationalist should vote for a state that sought to make them second class citizens but there are many that would vote for the Union. There is undoubtably some partitionist elements in the Republic but Nationalism and support for a United Ireland is higher among Nationalists in the 26 counties than in the 6 counties if you look at the polling. There is still probably 75% of Northern Nationalists that would vote for a United Ireland and with demographic change the number supporting a United Ireland will grow but it is true to say that it is people from a Nationalist background (de facto Unionists) who are now impeding Irish unity. A border poll will always be difficult to win for Nationalism as Unionists vote 96% for the Union, there are few Protestant Nationalists but there are large numbers of Catholic Unionists.

So we're going off topic a bit.

REDANDBLACK, I'm one of the Northern nationalists you talk about that doesn't give a hoot about a UI and you're probably correct that it poses a problem for getting to reunification with the South.

However, I think Barney is talking about something else. Something much more urgent. Something that can be tricky to chat about online and indeed in the real world. I think I know what he's getting at, and if so, I share the same concerns.

I have my reasons for disinterest in the political charade in the North, but there might come a time when I rediscover a sense of solidarity with people all around Ireland.

I think the National Anthem is part of the GAA. There are renditions at venues which could be better, but the sentiment is good. Do you want 'Ireland's Call' for example?
I wish the new President well in his role as leader of the largest sports body in Ireland.

A section of the NI political grouping can only say no. That is not progress, as trotted out in recent days.

Thing I see with a lot of catholics from the six counties is they are now happy enough with things like paying low car tax and insurance, having a better health service I think as well, the British state is pouring in billions to the place though, don't know how long that will last.
Maybe with this protocol deal the six counties will boom in the good sense of the word for a change with the chance to have access to both markets, UK and EU.
On the subject of the anthem before games I'd get rid of it and maybe save it for intercounty Championship games and county finals and maybe semi finals.
It is ridiculous before every game and also the minutes silences because of some death that's occurred, people are dying everyday of the week, we can't have a minutes silence for them all.

Agree totally.

It appears some have nought into the British bigging up of the NHS (which actually performed worse than the HSE down here during Covid!) among other things.

Rishi Sumak said yesterday that NI has the potential to be the most exciting economic region in the world.

That's true.
But it's been true for about a generation now.

But it ain't going to be achieved by voting for the Brexit-cementing Windsor Framework. .
It may just be achieved by joining forces with the region with 1.1% of the EU's population which attracts a quite staggeringly disproportionate 5% of the EU's FDI.

The Anthem is played before league games, and championship games. It is played before county semi finals, and finals, not at every club game. The minutes silence is in memory of an individual who was involved in the promotion and playing of GAA games, at county and club level.
It takes just 60 seconds, and I don't have a problem with it. I had posted references to the Anthem previously, but they were not approved by the moderators.

Funny thing is when Sunak was raving about the great position of the north now with having the protocol agreed he was actually describing the position the UK was in before Brexit.

I agree….. That " Irish call " been played at away international rugby is embarrassing… All in all he has to be an improvement on what he is taking over from…

Labhrás was rather invisible right enough.
Not a big follower of other sports but I don't think they play National Anthems except for International games of Finals.
