Tailteann Cup 2023

(Oldest Posts First)

After the group stage of this years Tailteann Cup (4 groups of 4) the group winners are qualifying directly for the quarter finals while the runners up and the 3 best placed third teams are qualifying for the preliminary quarter finals where they will be joined by New York. Now I do not know what criteria is being used to determine which 3 0f the 4 third placed teams qualify. I presume it will be the 3 teams with the best overall comparative record. I suggest using the final League positions to determine which 3 out of 4 third placed teams qualify. This should add something extra to Division 4 where there can be a lot of dead rubber games particularly towards the end of the campaign when teams are out of the running for promotion and there being no relegation .Finishing as high as possible could ultimately prove beneficial in the upcoming Tailteann Cup.

The three "best placed" third-placed teams across the four groups shall be determined using the following criteria.

(i) Total Number of Points
(ii) Score difference - subtracting the total Scores against from the Scores For
(iii) Highest Total Score For
(iv) Highest Total Goals For
(v) Lowest Total Goals Against
(vi) A Play-Off

Exception: In relation to means (ii) to (v) above, if the accumulated scores of a team, so involved, are affected by a disqualification, loss of game on a proven objection, retirement or walkover, the tie shall be decided by a PlayOff. If more than two teams are involved in a Play-Off, based on a draw conducted by the CCCC, two teams shall play-off for a Preliminary Quarter-Final place, with the remaining team(s) progressing to the Preliminary Quarter-Final.

In theory the Tailteann Cup is a reasonably good competition, and it means well but, in my opinion, it will be back to the drawing board in three- or four-year's max. In short there are too many if's but's and's and maybe's

There are simply too many T & C's, The TC, Provencial championship and the National football are to much close coupled, more demands on the players, in particular to the smaller dual counties, rushed through perhaps.

It is what it is for now, but we'll see.

Antrim and London are confirmed for the Tailteann Cup. Antrim will most likely be among the second seeds.

Players did want more games that are meaningful.

I don't know though. I don't think they've gotten the competitions quite right.

The toughest part of the Tailteann Cup is that Round 3, preliminary quarter-finals, quarter-finals and semi-finals are consecutive weeks. I think the weekend of the hurling quarter-finals is the influence so that possibly Croke Park but definitely RTÉ coverage can be guaranteed.
A reason to win the Tailteann groups is to avoid playing 4 weeks in a row. That's the jeopardy and reward.

They say a camal is a horse designed by a committee. What can you say about the Thailtean Cup?,
